Pancorbo on the Vasco Interior aka Camino de Baiona - it seems to change its name every time it crosses a border. Heads up: you will need a GPS coming out of Pancorbo as it is the one spot that is not elaborately way marked. We ended up trudging through ploughed fields and undergrowth to get back on track. Nice little town though.

Given the new thread, a pass is offered by one unqualified to do so, but you are such a faithful contributor.. shame you had to pass on the Parador. Let it go - I have no doubt you already did!

Portomarin, April 2019 - An encounter with Tarta de Santiago. I asked the woman serving breakfast to us in the restaurant if she had any Tarta de Santiago. She said it had just arrived from the bakery! So I asked if I could please take a photo before she cut it! Success! 😋

September 6, 2024. Somewhere between Mansilla de las Mulas and León, as I was walking that morning next to a building, I was struck by how my shadow looked so “Pilgrim-like”, very unlike my usual introverted nerdy appearance, and more like Indiana Jones looking for the Lost Ark. Is that really me???

More from Pancorbo, a fantastic pueblo!
This is from the ruins of the fortification that's right above it. Not as scary as it appears, but still...not for one with a fear of heights.

No. Definitely extra! There is a lovely short loop from the pueblo and back again that goes near there. The going up into the ruins is even extra from that: You can pass them by, and the views from the base are still eye-popping.

Edited to add the forgotten attachment from up in the ruins:

I was annoyed that the weather was so bad that I didn't fancy those steps in wet conditions- especially as such a short easy stage from Mirando de Ebro.

The Black Madonna of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-du-Puy, Le Puy-en-Velay, May 2022
From Wikipedia: In 1254 when passing through on his return from the Holy Land, Saint Louis IX of France gave the cathedral an ebony image of the Blessed Virgin clothed in gold brocade (Notre-Dame du Puy). It was destroyed during the Revolution, but replaced at the Restoration with a copy that continues to be venerated.

Sneaking in, without a photo. Well, my avatar is a CF scene taken near Tomas's place not long after the cruz de ferro. It is a blessed relief to check in to this thread, and others that offer glimpses of what awaits pilgrims along the many caminos leading to the Cathedral in Santiago. Thanks to everyone, your contributions light up the day for those who may never walk another pilgrimage to Santiago!

What a lovely post, @Kirkie; I agree with your sentiments! I enjoy each and every photo I see, even though I don't pop in often, and once I "get behind" in looking, it seems there are so many pictures, that I eventually can never catch up!

Heading into Torres Del Rio.
Oh, thank you @stewinyvr ! I have such good memories of Torres del Rio! We were there in September 2012 and stayed in the albergue La Pata de Oca. It was bloody hot when we arrived. So happy with the little swimming pool. And all night we enjoyed the local festivities.

Looks like fun, it was a little cooler when I was there, although it was September as well..I stayed at Hostal Rural San Andres, but it was too cold to tempt me in the pool. I did have a funny incident here. I booked my room on everyone's favourite booking site, and was happy to get the last dorm space, only to realize about 30 secs after confirming that I had booked for a female dorm ( I am male :) )..because of this I ended up upgrading to a private room with a bath - which I did use...during the pilgrim meal in the evening I was talking to a mother and daughter from New Zealand who had been originally booked in separate dorms, due to my cancellation they were able to be reunited :)

Still stuck in Pancorbo on the Via de Bayona. It's in a natural gap in the mountains that has been a conduit of paths, roads, and rail since time immemorial. If you ever take the train from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Burgos or vice versa, you'll go through here. Much more fun to walk as the train passes through in an eyeblink.

Part of the pueblo from the castillo ruins. @Peregrinopaul , check out the very very cook rocks!

My one and only surviving Pancorbo photo - a view from my balcony which would have been much nicer if I hadn't decided to include a Lufthansa lorry, just to identify the picture as a truck-stop. The internet is now so weak in Yangon that I'm not even sure if the thumbnail will load.

I did take the train, in 2012 from Bilbao to Madrid, and indeed Pancorbo blurred by. But I assure you, I noticed!

I haven't been back (yet) but the photos have me drooling.
I did cross the Sierra Urbasa last June from Alsasua to Estella, but the limestone formations are almost flat. I'd hoped to get pictures of that incredible mountain Beriain, but it was totally invisible in the clouds.

There are many great murals on the Frances, but this one in one of the streets of Belorado was one of my favourite inspirational ones. - My Spanish is not good, but I think this is : If someday we are not together I want you to always remember you are braver than you believe, stronger than you appear, and smarter than you think" thanks Duolingo :)

Walking alone in winter at 70 my emotions mixed anticipation/trepidation/expectation. To stride off toward Valcarlos 15 years ago in that icy pre dawn was extremely exhilarating!!

Pretty much as soon as you enter the region of Castilla y León you see the camino signs defaced with one or other of the two components crossed out...as I continued editing my camino pictures yesterday, I noticed this appropriate, and somewhat ironic (given it was also defacing the marker :) ) Father Ted sticker in the corner of one of the signs :)

Rock graffiti has arrived on the VdB?? Sigh.

Between Pancorbo and Briviesca the feel is more like the meseta. More rolling, but long vistas and big sky.

Don't think it was pilgrims....think it was maybe in memory of a local? There was a tree planted and a bench

A few days ago I posted a photo of the Black Madonna in the cathedral in Le Puy. I have pictures of three others in my blogs also. Taking photographs of unusual depictions such as these enhances my memories of visiting these places along the Camino.

The one on the far left is found in a small side altar in the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela; the one in the middle is found in the Eglise de Montlauzun, in Montlauzun, France along the Via Podiensis; the one on the right is found in the Eglise Sacre-Coeur in Lourdes. There are likely others ... I guess I will just have to go back and find them all! 🤣

Hi Bill905,

In my opinion the virgins on the right and the one on the left are reproductions of the virgin of Montserrat.
It is possible that on the small poster that the base says so.
I also remember seeing a virgin of Montserrat in the cathedral of Santiago

In this link you will find several photos of the original. This way you can form your opinion.

What a great link you provided! Thank you Josep! I really enjoyed reading it. Perhaps one day I will visit in person!

For anyone interested, this Wikipedia link outlines the locations of many Black Madonnas, not only throughout Europe, but across the world. Their list validates that the statue in Santiago de Compostela is a reproduction of La Moreneta found in the abbey in Montserrat. The statues that I encountered in Lourdes and Montlauzun do not seem to appear on the Wikipedia list.

What interesting things we learn on the forum ...

In the list also the very famous Black Madonna from Guadelupe in Spain.
I had the privilege of having a private Mass there. Just a priest and us two, but that is another story.

Here in Belgium we have one at the pilgrimagetown of Scherpenheuvel.

There are without doubt some beautifully well kept albergues and other accommodation on the camino, and then there are some others which are a little more challenging on the eye..these three made me smile...apparently there are talks about reviving the Hotel Irache..
