Samos

mural detail

photo taken November 10, 2004

Samos, Monastery of San Julian.jpg

Painted c.1955 these fantastic and historic figures surround an Oratorium door. Seen during a guided tour exactly 20 years ago this new mural was most impressive and rather frightening.

2004 was a Holy Year and thus
the Holy Door is open in this shot taken exactly 20 years ago at the conclusion of my first camino.

Wherever our paths might lead
may we go forward with hope.

"...but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope."
Romans 5: 3-4

En route to Burgos on the final leg of the Via de Bayona - March, 2024. The weather was not my friend
Oh yes. That place. It was memorable, even with good weather and less water underfoot.

Thank you all for keeping this thread going, with so many wonderful images!

This is also the Camino.
A road that goes on and on. Rain and no shelter.
6th of September 2024.
From Castro Dozon to Botos.
How well I remember the N525! I walked it all the way from Castro Dozon to Lalin because it was the only foolproof way of making sure I ended up in Lalin.
I tried following tracks suggested by Google maps, but my fear of getting lost sent me quickly back down to the highway. If only I had bought a Spanish SIM card…I had to keep switching to the other side of the road whenever I was approaching a blind corner, and there were many trucks. It was not a pleasant experience! But at least it wasn’t raining.

Camino Frances. September 24, 2012 and September 23, 2024

Between Frómista and Carrión de los Condes, the camino travels through a ZEPA zone - a Special Protection Area for Birds. There are significant populations of steppe birds in this zone, such as Great Bustards, Little Bustards, Montagu's Harrier and the Stone Curlew.

Just before Población de Campos, there are a series of information boards - this one for the Great Bustard, sadly deteriorated in the 11 years between photos. The beautiful raised relief of the bird and braille text remains clear and strong!

 sign Calzada de Coto.webp

This confusing sign details 2 ways to get to Mansillas de las Mulas. After Sahagún the CF passes through Bercianos del Real Camino, El Burgo Ranero and Religios. The alternate route accesses Calzada del Coto and continues through Calzadilla de los Hermanillos.

O Cebreiro snow 29.11.2012.webp

Exactly 12 years ago the snow at O Cebreiro measured 1 m. deep! This photo was taken with great joy/relief upon arrival! During several stormy hours a sturdy fellow and I had climbed up through a white-out.

Awesome wall art

April 2, 2022 Camino Frances
There seemed to be a lot of new wall art along the Camino in 2022! Done for Holy Year, I suppose.

Belorado had several striking pieces. There was one behind us leaving the town and there were signs advising us to turn around at a certain point to see it. I wish I had taken a photo of that one!

Camino Catalan. Fourteenth stage. La Panadella - Cervera - Tàrrega.
Cervera, Sant Jordi.
I did this stage on Saint George's Day. This day is a mixture of the feast of the patron saint of Catalonia, promotion of Catalan culture and Valentine's Day. The tradition is that men give roses to their loved ones and they give us books, today there are variants. That is why bookshops and florists are adorned

At La Curiosa for only 10€ in 2011 I enjoyed an outstanding daily menu including cauliflower, grilled salmon with scalloped potatoes, lemon pudding, rosé wine and coffee! ...Their delicious memory remains although surely the daily menu prices have risen since 2011!

Mansilla de las Mulas 17.11.2014.webp

Although a cold wind was blowing outside I was once again warmly greeted inside the municipal albergue where the welcoming hospitalera, Laura, in her distinctive way had created with much ambiance and soul a pilgrim home.

O Cebreiro, July 2006
This beautiful creation was on the counter of a bar where we sampled the local soft white cheese with honey, before setting off again, onwards and upwards...
Looking at it again, I imagine a fair few tortillas were concocted from the contents of the basket!
