LIVE from the Camino [Salamanca to Santiago - Sanabrés 2024 - Intermediary in my Home to Home]

I think of it as ‘the more you put in, the more you get out’. Nobody could accuse you of not ‘putting in’. Do please keep the narrative coming. I’m sure there are many vicariously on Camino with you this time as well as previously.

    SIM Card and ATM fees

Not on a cost, but avoiding problems point; look out for one of the increasing number of ‘contactless’ ATMs. If you don’t put your card in, you cannot fail to get it out.

More rocks. Can you bear it?

After a passably successful career as a generalist I stand in awe of someone who actually knows what he’s talking about, they are surprisingly few and far between. Keep the rocks coming.

The Camino Walks Into Vogue Magazine

I see it slightly differently - although I don’t disagree with you; it’s a bit ‘robin hood’ - distributing wealth from the indisputably rich to the arguably more deserving. The very wealthy have always existed, have been ‘on Camino ’ since its inception, and they certainly didn’t carry their...

    SJPDP pilgrim office - why?

None whatsoever. Nice people, free to everyone; but if you don’t need them they’ve a queue to deal with.

Legend of the nine rings of Ourense

Whenever one is challenged as to why there should be a publicly-funded broadcaster in the UK, not dependant on 50% rubbish and 50% adverts; I point them at the World Service; In our Time on Radio 4 and BBC Reel. It’s a lost cause sadly, it’ll be game shows and junk food adverts within the decade.

Novels Set In Spain, Any Recommendations?

Try Gerald Brenan, ‘South from Granada’. His trip was circa 1919, but I think it’s what you’re looking for. Published 1957. (Edit 2 - found it!) I’m reasonably certain I’ve a copy in my library, but I can’t lay my hands on it at the moment. (Edit: if he was travelling north, I’m wrong - but...

Novels Set In Spain, Any Recommendations?

Whilst it doesn’t meet the criterion of being set in Spain, Laurie Lee’s first book ‘Cider with Rosie’ is superior by far and and significantly more accurate.

The Camino Walks Into Vogue Magazine

Vogue? Well that’s the private rooms and bag transport sector booked solid then. Well- written, I thought. The author has a decent understanding and doesn’t pretend to be doing anything other than a guided ‘highlights’ tour.

    2 Stamps per day

A good number of Policía stations (and many Guarda Civil) have a sign in the window saying ‘don’t even think about it’. If, on the other hand you encounter a ‘Guarda Civil Atención al peregrinos’ patrol, they’ll be delighted.

    Atapuerca archaeological site

No, in my opinion. I didn’t get in any of the same sense of place as in (for example) Rome, Cairo,Athens - and many other smaller or remote places. The MoHE in Burgos is most certainly worth a couple of hours; but you’re unlikely to discover much you don’t know if you paid attention in school.

    Overthinking this thing.

On my first Camino in 2014 - as a very experienced walker (even mountaineer), with all the lightweight kit I could possibly need - I was matched day for day by a Spanish Peregrino whose luggage consisted of a ‘dia’ plastic carrier bag which contained all he needed and which obviously didn’t...

What do you do on a rest day

I think sometimes one does not realise how tired you can be. I sometimes still think like I’m in my 20’s, which causes Mrs HtD to repeatedly explain reality to me; but I’ll still carry on waking at dark o’clock and walking 30+k/day like it is normal. Once in a while I find it helpful to get a...

    Train travel

Good plan wrt trains - I’ve often done the same myself. Worth noting that whilst you can do this direct with RENFE, you can do the same via Trainline which now has ‘native’ interface with RENFE, so you get all the updates and options just as if you had booked direct. The ALSA app also allows...

    Pilgrim stamps.

If one had the time and ‘copy and paste’ skills (or could engage a passing teenager for the job) one could create a souvenir montage of suitable sellos. There are many to be found online and referenced in threads on here. This one may be a start...

    Madrid-Uclès or Uclès-Madrid

I think there are a few of us in contact with the very helpful Manuel. I’ve bought one of everything he’s selling, so might as well use it. To do the route as the C de Ucles - so ending in Ucles - is the obvious intent; otherwise it’s more properly regarded as the start of a C de Santiago...

6 Month Training & Weight Loss Plan for an Overweight/Plus Size Pilgrim

You’re in good company. I claim it would make me harder to kidnap.

    A bit of the Ebro

I was wrong. I had been researching both Zaragoza and Lleida - having not been to either before; and had the two incidents (both of which were clearly tragic) conflated.

    Lightweight Camino - Forum Input

Anyone who weighs their passport is taking the job seriously. I think you’re missing your GHIC and perhaps some foot-care and basic first-aid. Your total skin-out weight at 5.5kg is impressive - aided by selecting some very good lightweight brands. Allowing for what you’re wearing and your...

Need a Pep Talk for the Climb from Combarro to Armenteira

I suspect that the now-renamed Natalia will have her own story to tell how she beat Mum up the hill. You’ll be fine - it’s days like tomorrow you’ll remember. Bom Caminho
