    Ditto what people are saying about the complementary route along the river- take it! Also, I really like O Porriño. It’s a humble but enjoyable town with friendly locals and some nice bars and restaurants.

    Route planning issues

    I like Camino Ninja for route planning. You would have to use Camino Portuguese Central for Valença to Pontevedra and the switch to Variant Espiritual. You can easily see all the distances.

    I would call the albergue and ask them how full they’ve been. They should be able to give you a good idea of your chances to get a bed. For example, we’ve been full or almost full every night or we’ve been averaging 30 and we have 60 beds. Buen Camino

    Hi Gretchen I stayed there last night and really enjoyed it. 1- It was only about ten km from where the boat lets you you off. You could enjoy a leisurely breakfast in Padron and meander your way. We ended up having to hang out for a couple of hours before it opened, but it was pleasant weather...

    Trail runners 100%. The Camino is very rocky/pointy/bumpy and you will be glad to have a rock plate in the shoe, which trail runners have, to protect your feet.

    Good point about Bruma. I’d make a reservation at the very nice private albergue to avoid disappointment. Quite a few upset pilgrims were turned away the day I was there.

    I walked late August last year and was able to make friends pretty quickly. Tended to see the same people along the way and at the albergues.

    Difficulty comparison: Camino del Norte vs. Camino Frances from St. Jean Pied de Port

    Started early June. Medium fit, early 60s. Lots of mud, slippery descents, especially the first week. Quite a few tough spots for me. I thought about quitting numerous times but glad I persevered.
