A great walking day today, exploring the trails at Belcarra. With the torrential rain we've had the last few days, autumn forest mushrooms are popping up. Soaked my shoes following a little estuary stream through the woods to the ocean.

A tremendous need recently to get out in nature ...

Yesterday's walk was beside a local creek swollen with run off from recent rains, and a deafening roar. Moss covered trees and a gigantic maple leaf.

Today's 'urban hike' was a good workout, but only that, no pictures. There are signs in the trails reminding people to do their bit to curtail the spread of Covid and prevent the closure of local trails. I think many of our provincial parks are still closed.

A little walk along the English South West Coast Path from Exmouth, I'm starting my prep for the C de Invierno next March, a beautiful day where I have actually seen the coast for the first time since last year, despite only living 10 miles from the Sea. For people who have not seen this path before it is not usually hard surfaces like here it is usually natural single file tracks.

Sunshine two days in a row I had a walk on the wall near my house. I am happy that they build those steps at the end, it was rather difficult for us elderly people to walk up or down there.

I finally went through a small town where there were actually people (old ladies like me) sitting outside having lunch. I had a 40 minute wait at a RR crossing while the tie-replacing machine went through, but it was a beautiful day so no problem! By my calculations I got within two miles of my age— maybe next week.

You know, that is one of the frequent surprises of these bike rides. I just mosey around through small towns and find all these “painted ladies,” (Victorians from late 1800s early 1900s) some of which are well maintained like this one, and some of which are just left to fall down. I am not sure who lives in them, but have been planning to stop to chat with an owner if I ever see someone out and about. The only owner I saw yesterday at 9:30 on a Sunday morning in this town was someone whose friends had TP-ed a big tree outside her mobile home and she was out there swinging furiously with a broom to bring it down.

I have not started that yet, mainly because I need the phone battery to get me from point A to point B and home (just using google maps). These trips take me about 8-9 hours total including rests and stops, and yesterday I got home with just a smidgen of power to spare. No recorded trails to follow, so I figure that I shouldn’t add the battery usage that would come with recording my own trail, though I have thought that would be fun to do. I am making slow progress on wikiloc, though, having agreed that that is the app for me to go with.

This was our day although it was not raining when we started and we had intended to walk up the Grisdale valley and onto Helvellyn via the ridge
Misty at first and then the rain came down as we got to within spitting distance of Grisdale lake and decided to come back on the other side
The lake is somewhere under the mist!

It rained...it poured...it was torrential
A wonderful walk though!

Love these pictures. One of my goals is to visit the Lake District. I believe the author/illustrator Beatrix Potter is credited with saving a lot of this beautiful countryside from developers. I’ve seen Miss Potter, the movie based on her life, but do you know of good book I can read about it?

On our one trip to the UK we skipped London and landed in Manchester to go to (among other places) the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. We loved it.

To me it looks like it was a day for special pickup of anything. The grill interested me. We picked up one from a neighbor for free that unfortunately did not work too well. Peg ended up wheeling one home in poor condition a quarter mile away on trash day but the owner said it worked. I was able to swap parts to get a completely free grill that works and has three propane tanks.

There is a museum of Beatrix Potter in Windermere but we've never visited it....those fells were calling us loud and clear!

I haven't read any of BP books but I did check on Amazon and a few do sound interesting..

Thank heavens she did do so much as a conservationist for the Lakes ......a pioneer really.

All the others such as Windemere, Conisten,Buttermere are all called Mears, Tarns and Waters ...and they are 21 of them I think.

I do so hope that you will get to see this wonderful place sometime soon ...don't forget the boots...and rain gear!
And maybe in spring, when Wordsworths daffodils are in bloom

I've been to England twice, didn't skip London, but preferred other areas more...Cotswolds, various abbeys, and the SE coast. The Lakes region has intrigued me and hope I have opportunity to spend time there one day.
Ironically, I skipped Dublin when visiting Ireland a few years ago.

Been a while since I last logged on... caught up in the TimeSoup of Covid2020 but still walking, still planning...

First of our recent walks was a neighbourhood green space where the Council has retained the almond trees and the smell of the blossom is just gorgeous...



then a fortnight ago we celebrated our 46th Wedding Anniversary by backpacking a sumptuous lunch into Mt Hayfield in the Fleurieu Peninsula... a mix of pine and native forest with (feral) deer and (native) kangaroos and a beautiful red bellied black snake who was out and about early...



I've attached the walk notes (from Push the Bush, Extended Day Walks in the Mount Lofty Ranges by Friends of the Heysen Trail) for any South Aussies who are looking for a training walk... be warned! Forestry SA is often working in the area so check with their website first - it's not called the Bermuda Triangle for nothing!

Thank you for this, Annette. i hope to visit the Lake District as soon as I’m able. It‘s not far from Nottingham, close by my grandfather’s old stomping grounds, which I need to revisit as I lost all my photos from that trip (including pictures of newfound relatives). I also want to have lunch again at Nottingham’s Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, which claims to be the oldest inn in England.

Oh, and I know about the rain. It was January, 2014; I think the rainiest winter you’d had in years. ️️️

A short local walk around one of our old artisinal syrup factories. Now a converted low key brasserie where people with learning dissabilities get work experience.
One of the pics is an old pilgrimage chapel. Originally from 13th century but this one is from the 17th. Interior is ghastly baroque so no picture of that.
The walk is named after the common kestrel...typical for this area.

A 10 minute walk from the house brings us to Fairlop Waters and usually a 5-6 mile walk on the paths and around the lake and back by the high street where there's a stop for a coffee
This week we walked on 2 days before the rain forecast arrived.
Once an area attached to Hainault forest it's been used for agriculture, an airfield during both world wars and a sandpit before being converted into a park and outdoor sailing and canoeing centre...also has a golf course which is lovely to walk on when the golf balls aren't flying!
The park also utilised by the local schools for outdoor activities and the 3 lakes are man made
A few Boulder parks for young and old and climbing areas for energetic children
We are so grateful and lucky to have such a place near to us and never appreciated more than in these Covid times

I did walk today. In the rain. Early, to the dentist. Then this and that, and the hairdresser, and then home. Since, I have been busy but in the last half hour while on the phone I have been looking through the window at the cotton wool sky, with a pretend palm tree waving over the fence of the neighbour's garden. Around this time in the day there is a play of silver in the sky: I don't know what kind of birds they are, but they love swooping, and sometimes there is a lone tail-ender, who gets into the dance on the return swoop. As I type, they have moved on. The trees are dancing now, and the clothes line.

Brr!!! It is a lovely bright day, if bitterly cold when the sun goes behind the clouds. Just a little walking, and part of the time sitting 2 metres from @SioCamino when we met this morning outside Epic. She now has a new survival bag and a pair of gaiters, and I am delighted they have found a new owner. Then I walked to a wonderful community cafe and sat outside with a friend and her little grandniece. It is off the beaten track and a great secret. For anyone who knows Ringsend, sniff it out, you will not regret it. Fair Play Café

Another shortish walk, and we also have signs of Autumn everywhere. Lots of runners, walkers, cyclists. There is a very wide space to accommodate the different categories, except at some points there is no opportunity to keep social distance. I give a wide sweep by going on the grass. I came home to leave in the bit of shopping and am going out again soon for another ‘fix’ of my daily stretch along by the river.

A walk along my usual favourite morning paths and a photo of the 120 year old Steves farmhouse - the family who my village is named after. Descendants of the original family still live in the house and farm on the land along the tidal flats. They raise Belted Galloway cattle and grow fruits and vegetables for a heritage seed program that preserves heirloom and endangered seeds, fruits, grains and herbs. A very special place that has somehow survived in the middle of encroaching urban development.

It did not rain however so that was a bonus

After a few overcast rainy days, this morning dawned beautifully. A walk along my usual favourite morning paths and a photo of the 120 year old Steves farmhouse - the family who my village is named after. Descendants of the original family still live in the house and farm on the land along the tidal flats. They raise Belted Galloway cattle and grow fruits and vegetables for a heritage seed program that preserves heirloom and endangered seeds, fruits, grains and herbs. A very special place that has somehow survived in the middle of encroaching urban development.

What a beautiful walk. I haven’t been to Canada (yet) - these pics conjure calming & peaceful thoughts. I also love to see ‘belted cattle ‘. I see them here on occasion in Oz also.

I went on my usual Sunday circuit, a little later than usual so did not avoid the cyclists and runners. I need to be redeemed of my violent reaction... anyway, that all followed having listened to a reflection on what clothes to wear. Not quite for ‘The’ Camino, but for the daily camino of life. The recommendations predate technical clothing, but they are all weightless! Anyone interested in the reference, pm me as to put it here would break a rule.

Last weekend I attended a photo-forums meetup in Berlin. We walked a bit around. And spent some time on the rivers and canals. In Berlin you find more bridges than in Venice, Paris and Hamburg altogether.

Sabine, I hope you have spent a night in one of those tree tents. Looks relaxing. If they were here in the US, they would soon be vandalized or otherwise mistreated and would probably have a smell of urine — do these have security cameras, or do they just trust people to treat them with care?

No cameras that I know of. Regular padlocks for closing.
We are a nice bunch of people here so no vandalising.
Dropping illegal garbage is a bigger annoyance here!!!

Someone from the town hall and tourism board comes to inspect it regularly and I guess local farmers will also keep an eye on it.

Never stayed there ( too close from home and rather expensive ) but I hear from families with young children that they love it. Well the small children, parents somewhat less... .
