In Porto 3 years ago, just before heading out on the Coastal Camino Portugués - we went across the river to Vila Nova de Gaia. While tasting the fine ports of the Taylor Fladgate Winery - established in 1692, and enjoying wonderful cheeses, we were regaled with the beauty of a strutting rooster and a majestic peacock. On the way back to cross the bridge to Oporto we came across this awesome street 3D art depiction of a rabbit:-)

Cordes-sur-Ciel, France
photo taken January 2012

Cordes sur Ciel .jpg

Cordes-sur-Ciel is a fortified town in the Tarn département. The French GR46 hiking route passes through Cordes as it meanders sw towards Toulouse.

After shooting this view I enjoyed a delicious/expensive lunch in an upmarket resto, the only place open that cold day. I wore my camino winter garb including a shell. As I stood to leave the owner's teenage daughter rushed to my side asking if I were a pilgrim. I nodded yes and we two sat down by their blazing fireplace to plot/plan together her future camino .

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Several photos from 2016 along the solitary Camino Sanabrés. One of my very favorite albergues was the Albergue Casa Leiras in Dornelas. Cristina and Andrés from Italy fell in love with the area when they were walking this same path and decided to purchase the property back in 2008 and open an albergue. My stay there was memorable because I had the whole place to myself;-) and the highlight definitely was when they invited me to dinner in the main house with them and their lovely twin toddler daughters, they made me feel at home!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Walking here was cold in late November. I quickly visited the impressive 13-16th c. Cathédrale Saint Etienne; unfortunately the interior light was too dim to adequately see the famed stained glass.

Auxerre is a major stop on an historical walking route/ l'ancienne route d'Auxerre á Vézelay crossing Burgundian farmland/ vineyards southeast to the Abbey at Vézelay.

It was lonely and cold as I passed these huge cliffs known as the Rochers du Saussois walking along l'ancienne route d'Auxerre á Vézelay/the old route from Auxerre to Vézelay via Mailly-le-Chateau. This historic route then followed the Nivernais canal to Châtel Censoir, a small village, which takes its name from Saint Censure or Censoire, 5th c. bishop of Auxerre.

After two years of posting on this wonderful thread I can still find a photo, that with a little investigation, provides something interesting. I took this photo of a lintel, plaques and sculpture above a door in Villar de Mazarife on September 29, 2012. Today I discovered that this was the final studio and home of the Leonese artist / sculptor Luis López Casado, also known as Monseñor, who died in 2009. His home is now a museum.

Me! 🤭 I have never been to Finisterre, and (horrors!) have no interest in going.

Yesterday the twisted steeple of a chapel in Jodoigne, on market day. Both very impressive.

Sorry for my silly assumption! We went by bus, and there I found the most refreshing fountain of water on a curve in the inevitable hill up to the point zero marker. In the town afterwards we 'found' an Italian who had gone ahead in Atapuerca!

Vezelay Abbey and la colline eternelle have been a love of mine for fifty years or so; Romanesque, Gothic, and 19th c. intervention form timeless beauty. Eternal peace is combined with man-made perfection.
...Might this magnificent site endure for another thousand years.

In this photo I was entering the light of the ambulatory silently thankful to be there once again after walking from home.

Hello to my Camino friends. Today is a great day! Today is Easter Sunday, and on Easter Sunday in 2019, while in the lovely town of O Cebreiro on the Camino Frances, I took one of the most memorable photos I have ever taken (see below). The experience and the symbolism were very moving. And that is not the only reason today is a great day! Later tonight I will board a plane for Porto, where the Camino Portuguese awaits! YES! I am returning, and … I am not returning alone! I am over the moon that my oldest granddaughter will accompany me! I am looking forward to sharing with her, and passing along the spirit of the Camino. Just a few days ago she wrote her last exam to finish her first year of university, and is very excited to be walking the Camino with her “Da”. I can’t think of a better way to contemplate one’s situation and future than with a Camino. And there is yet another reason why today is a great day … when I was walking the CF in 2019, I was with 2 other pilgrims that I met while walking. We have kept in touch since then. One of these good friends is the person who rushed over to me as I sat resting in O Cebreiro and urged me to “Come quickly to the church!” where I was able to take this fantastic Easter Morning picture. I have recently learned that he and his wife are currently walking the Camino del Norte and may arrive in Santiago around the same time as we will, on May 1st. Despite the fact that it is a little far off, and perhaps difficult to predict exactly when they, and we, will arrive in Santiago, pilgrims reading this forum know how these things work out. The timing is just right, and as is sometimes said, it’s just too much of a coincidence to be a coincidence! It is a happy day! Easter blessings to all!

I don’t recall any slippery black rocks during this stage on Camino del Norte. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Found the stone, it's Negro marquina marble, quarried in the Markina region of the Basque country, I'm surprised you never noticed it underfoot as even very slippery when dry weather

Was this on the descent into Deba? We certainly remember what we would call cobblestones. It was very wet when we walked into Deba and quite treacherous underfoot on these stones. We walked it very slowly!

photo taken January 2013

La Charité sur Loire.jpg

The town, La Charité-sur-Loire, is named after a vast Cluniac monastery founded in 1059 and partly destroyed during medieval wars and a 16th c. fire. This church was part of that monastery and is located on a section of the Chemin de Saint-Jacques between Vézelay and Bourges. In architecture a chevet is the exterior area behind the main altar of a church.

I seem to remember there was a good few miles up and down, I was constantly slipping on them

By chance did you stay for Vespers and overnight? March 2007 I walked there from the CF at Azura. It was a most memorable visit.

Yes, we did and it was indeed a memorable experience. There was also a concert being held there the night we stayed with three choirs from different parts of Galicia, two adult ones and one children’s choir, it was wonderful. We also attended Vespers.

folkart, Redecilla del Camino.jpg

Facing the church on the calle Mayor, aka Camino Frances, a simple window is decorated with a 21st c. folkart cutout depicting Saint James as Matamoros

Although the baptimal font and the cutout span almost 1000 years both exhibit the intense desire of their craftsmen to espress an ideal.

That baptismal is incredibly beautiful. Wow!! 🤩 Thank you for sharing.
I have the same photo of the cutout of St James. Beautiful in its own right.

This is a place to share memories and short reflections, one photo per day, one day at a time. Some of us will not make it to Spain this year, so this is our every day Camino fix. If you have been along for the ride since 1.0, you may find you need to repeat your posts,, but that is totally fine! We will see them with new eyes.

For new contributors, please note:
One photo per day (from a camino)
Please attach the thumbnail size so that even those of us with slow connections can see them.

My photo for the day is definitely a repeat, but it is one of my all-time favorite camino sights, from the Vasco just after Segura. Someone was so kind as to construct a chicken bridge for their hens, so they can get from their coop to happy hunting grounds in a grassy paddock across the stream. This hen was screeching, obviously not so comfortable with the crossing. As soon as she made it over, she stopped yelling.

The amazing Hostal De San Marcos in Leon. Now a parador which i was lucky enough to stay in after i stopped walking at this point back in 2014 (if you share a room it can work out ok financially).
They have done some restoration works in recent years to the entrance/foyer which i am not sure i am a fan of, but nonetheless it is still a Renaissance tour de force.

On the way out of Ferrol, I met a Dignified Man coming the other way.

(it's José Canalejas y Méndez, a former Prime Minister of Spain and Ferrol alumni)

I too met this dignified man some years ago. I tried to make friends with him but didn’t quite succeed.

!t is not too long since I posted this photo before. I wish I could remember the name of the albergue. It had a big room with bunk beds, and the owner, having walked a camino, designed the bunks with enough height so nobody needed to crouch. Thankfully I had a bottom bunk! Belorado, 2006.
