The incredible vaulting and retablo in the Parroquia de Santo Tomas in Haro on the Vasco.

Moving into Asturias from Cantabria, the montanesa style is still evident but you catch the first glimpse of the wonderful horreos. As an aside i chatted to a lovely old couple last summer (from a distance), in their late 80s/90s in the village where the first photo is taken, Pendueles. I had just been reading a book about the last rector of the famous Irish College in Salamanca, Fr, McCabe during the 1930s who used to holiday in Pendueles. He spent much of the Spanish war years wrestling with the Nazis officials and spanish nationalist troops who had commandeered much of the College at this time as Salamanca was the HQ for the Nationalist forces. Blueshirt General Eoin O Duffy and his ill fated and prepared Irish brigade even stayed; Fr McCabe had no time for O'Duffy and the Spanish officers were dismayed by their levels of drinking!
The Irish College had a summer house in Pendueles which all the priests used to escape to each year. I asked the lovely old couple did this ring a bell. and the certainly did, they pointed in the direction of the house and remember Fr. McCabe coming each summer - quite a character they said, which by all accounts is true.

If my memory serves me well, these two go together. The earthquake in Portugal made its presence felt here too. If I have the wrong church, no harm! The statue is 15th century. I can't find the rest of the note: 'estatua que inspiró...' I think I might be conflating two things: one, the Lisbon Earthquake, and 2, the inspiration this gave to a classical author in Spain. I know there are some people on this forum who can teach me with these slight clues...

First seen in 2004 my favorite pilgrim figure of Saint James is this exquisite mid 15th c. sculpture in the Burgos cathedral museum. Standing roughly half a meter tall in vermeil/ gold plate on silver, James wears a pilgrim hat complete with shell atop his delightfully precise curls. Sainthood is depicted by the flat halo behind his head. He grips his pilgrim staff and from one shoulder hangs a tiny traveling bag known as a scrip also decorated with three additional shells. ...Perfection.

One of my best Camino memories from my first Camino was staying at Manjarín.
No electricity. No running water. Outhouse. Scary looking sheets/pillowcases.
But one of the most memorable experiences of all!
During dinner a dirty, barefoot young man walked in, carrying a very small bag of belongings.
He looked like a beggar, I thought.
No fancy equipment. No backpack. No special shoes or fancy hat.
He did not speak.
Only Tomas realized he was doing his pilgrimage in silence.
He was offered a place at the table and I learned a lesson about judgment.
Years later, I nabbed this photo with Tomas; a little blurry but precious to me.
Sweet, sweet memories...

Boadilla. The wonderful surprise behind the big circular wall. Were there beds? I mean, single beds? And sheets? I do remember, each one paid the princely sum of €5.00. The albergue part was a converted henhouse, fairly new at that time. Just a haven of rest after the heat of the day. I see from many posts that the son of the house has continued to charm everyone.

One of my best Camino memories from my first Camino was staying at Manjarín.

Outhouse? There was an outhouse when you visited? When we stayed there you had to go across the road and, hidden in the vegetation, was an open platform with a square hole. It wasn't much different from the "deserted" spots along the way except this place had a target.

Great memories of this Albergues just across Puenta la Rabia in Zubiri. Had a very rough, snowy and icy walk entirely on the road from Roncesvalles. When I rung the door bell and the Hospi opened it, he took one look at me and grabbed my pack and carried it (while half dragging me) up to the accommodation floor. Verrry good sleep that night

Anticipation for yet another Camino. These particular ones are of Chamartin trainstation in Madrid and the metro at Porto airport but it can be anywhere. For me the feeling is the same when I arrive in Irun station, Santiago/ Zaragoza airport. The feeling that I am blessed to be able to take time off from work and having the funds to start a new Camino.

Two bars. One pharmacy. One fancy hotel. Two restaurants. A townhall with very friendly people. A gorgeous but closed church.
Although it is a compact town I of course was again able to enter it via a different route then you and our Catalonian fellow pilgrim.... . Nothing new there...
A good basic albergue with a peculiar volunteer. Thanks again to our fellow pilgrim who did all the communication with him...

If you like unspoilt and quiet Caminos then the Vasco Interior is a good choice.

Fantastic and historic figures painted c.1955 surround an Oratorium door

Parts of the Benedictine monastery complex are 9th century, but the majority was built in the 16th /17th centuries. Much, however, was rebuilt after a 1951 fire. Only sections can be visited. My 2004 guided view of these new murals which line interior corridors was most impressive and rather frightening.

Abadia de Samos provides further religious history as well as art history of this monument.

Sometimes I am stricken with doubt as to whether or not a photo is really one of ours. This one leaves no doubt. I am looking at the camera, or at least it was looking at me. I was just sitting there willing for the time to open and get inside out of the heat! Bercianos.

On the A Coruña arm of the Ingles, once well clear of the city you come to the compound of the XII C Iglesia de Santiago de Sigras. There is a lovely feeling to the place.
