León  18.11.2014.webp

In the calm "slow season" at the Benedictine albergue run by the Santa Maria de las Carbajalas nuns I was allowed to stay two nights. All was clean, well heated with a good free breakfast.

Have these delicate remains of faded fresco in the Cloister been restored since 2007?
Elegantly panelled, this entrance into the Claustro/Cloister, was visible in 2007. Can it still be easily seen?
Not quite what you are looking for, Margaret, but this was from 2015 (sorry, more than one!):

Two saints guard the cloister garden within the Parador. When I dared ask if the famous Renaissance garden could be visited the elegant maitre de answered that I might faire le tour but must NOT enter it!

Thus while I slowly walked the periphery arcade those saints and he intently watched every footstep!! This photo is proof of my peripatetic quest!

metal pilgrim.webp

This metal pilgrim pointed towards the two ways to leave the town near the junction of the main CF, which parallels the noisy route N120 direct to Villadangos, and the peaceful alternate camino going slightly SW to Villar de Mazarife.

alternate route from Virgin del Camino.webp

The alternate camino SW towards Villar de Mazarife avoided highway noise and suburban sprawl. The mud path crossing wide flat plains planted with corn was slick from incessant cold rain. From time to time hunters' shots could be heard, sometimes a bit too close for comfort!

In Villavante it was a suprise to see this circular flight of steps "hidden" in the locked church tower while walking from Villar de Mazarife along the CF alternate route towards Hospital d'Orbigo

Passing through this unroofed patio was very pleasant in fine weather; however during storms it was always a wet dash from the dorm on the left to the loo/shower on the right, especially in late autumn/winter.

Oh, those beautiful windows - I'd recognize them anywhere - thank you!

Hospital de Órbigo 2014.webp

Crossing the famous Hospital de Orbigo bridge I was stricken with "Delhi belly" and needed privacy fast! The nearest open door was at the casa rurale Nuestra Senora de Lourdes. A cozy single room with private loo/shower was immediately accessible!! ...This lucky find was another example of camino serendipity.!

Each time I hiked past this rigid fellow his clothes and kit had changed. Since this was shot during my last full CF I wonder what is he wearing now?

Poster advertising the Landzette in Etroubles, Aosta Valley July 2024. It's an annual festival celebrating Napoleon's march over the Grand St Bernard Pass. The Via Francigena is packed full of these little historical curiosities. There is festival in a few weeks but there seems to be more than one.

According to the notes attached to this photo, it was taken, by me, in August 2019, so on the Inglés. The name of the gable bellfry is one of the first words I retained in Spanish! Why? It contains elements of the name of the country..Espadaña.
Thanks so much for the opportunity to share photo memories this way, one day at a time. Special thanks to the regular contributors with much better organised filing than I have!
welcome, when the New Year comes and a new thread is created.

The label says number 109, and it was on the CF, 2006.
