Questions about availability of facilities in November.

You’re going to have to help us out with which route and from where (although I could venture a guess) and when. Many factors are specific to those three variables.

    Dublin to Leon

Fly Madrid, train to Leon. Try using Rome to Rio.

    Question..Donativo/Muni albergues OR Private lodgings?

I’m sure, like you, I think the concept of ‘pilgrimage’ is in your head, not your wallet. I still hesitate to refer to myself, and many others, as pilgrims. With respect to funding; on some parts of (e.g) the Madrid, and I’m sure elsewhere the only option in some places is a municipale. I...

Ride share Share taxi Pamplona to SJPDP Thursday 19 September 2024 at 16:00

Pretty much every long distance train into Pamplona has a few peregrinos on it, all heading to St Jean or Roncesvalles. You’re looking for a rucksack and clean shoes. Buen camino.

Where to get a Scallop Shell in Madrid?

You could try the church of Santiago y San Juan Batista, not far from Sol. The church issues credenciales for the C de Madrid. they’re in the room at the rear on the left.

Saint Jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalles, leaving in the afternoon

That is seriously fast. Off-road (which I appreciate this isn’t, I ascend 400m/hour or cover 5km/hr. I’m certain of the timings based on years in the hills in the UK and Central Europe. I’m fairly fit and I can keep going, literally, all day. That rate gives me a ‘standard time’ of 8.5 hours...

Busing out of Leon but to where?

Perfect. You get from A to B by passing through - well … Let me start that again You get from A to Z by passing through B to Y. If you’ve any notion of being a ‘pilgrim’ that’s what you do. It doesn’t matter if A is your home, parish church, an entirely arbitrary but somehow mandatory start...

    Where next?

The most obvious would be the Portuguese routes.

    Absolutely terrified to start

Without wishing to be rude, you are seriously over-thinking this. On my first Camino in 2014 my fellow holidaymakers included a fair number who shouldn’t have been allowed to cross the road on their own but - somehow - nothing caught fire, nobody died, and everyone got to Santiago. Get on...

Enquiry about foot care, bunions, weather…..

Whatever worked for you before should work for you again. How do you wash your socks?

What if your backpack gets lost?

I’m fairly certain that the vast majority on here who have a delayed or lost pack would tell us. This is the first report I can recall in quite some time - and that’s in the context of a very large number of folk setting off on Camino. It’s a numbers game, just like crossing the road. I always...

Have a look around the taxi queue at the train station before taking a taxi on your own.

    Question..Donativo/Muni albergues OR Private lodgings?

Whilst my days of sleeping in donativos are largely behind me that doesn’t preclude making a donation whilst passing. I’ve often asked if I might have a coffee if I’m passing round the end of breakfast time and I pay generously if I can. It’s a while ago, but I recall only a handful of the...

Just a week on the Camino in autumn - which one to choose?

So you’re looking for solitude but you don’t want it to be too solitary? How many people do you want to see each day and do you count the indigenous population or just other tourists? The ‘no rain’ part is beyond anyone temporal’s ability to promise I’m afraid.

    Train from Santiago to madrid

It’ll be ‘Trainline’ and it’s unpredictable. I wouldn’t even look more than six weeks ahead and wouldn’t be concerned if the trains were not available four weeks ahead. They will be listed at the same time on both platforms, and Rail Europe. You’ll not miss out if you keep an eye on those two...

Busing out of Leon but to where?

It’s Spain not Disneyland. More real people live and work in the slightly-less-beautiful parts than they do in all the ‘cascos antiguos’. You might as well just take a ‘highlights’ bus tour and not pretend.

Irish Girl, first time Camino, Sept 19th 2024, starting from Sarria

It actually make a pleasant change to be trying to persuade someone who has allowed plenty of time to do more. Usually we’re in dialogue with someone straight off the red-eye from the US who’s stressing about what platform to catch their unmissable train and has allowed for a whole hour in...

    Train travel mid Oct/Nov

Have a look what trains are running this week; it’s highly likely that the same trains will run in a month’s time. RENFEs process for confirming trains defies logic. I’m on an AVE Barcelona to Zaragoza in early October which was on sale two and a half months ago, whilst the local train I need...

    Travel from Santiago to Madrid

I’m not sure we got to the bottom of that. The pre-publicity and on the ground experience didn’t add-up. If the OP chooses Cercanias then asking at the station whilst there is still time to take an uber or taxi would be wise.

Irish Girl, first time Camino, Sept 19th 2024, starting from Sarria

With a month in-hand, you can certainly take your time and enjoy it. Would you consider starting in Leon instead? You’ll likely have a couple of weeks around Santiago otherwise. Buen Camino
