Looking for any suggestions for where I might purchase a size small Altus poncho. I live in the U.S. and two years ago purchased mine on-line from a shop in Pamploma, and am looking to purchase another one. It seems they are sold out everywhere I look. Given that my search has come up empty, I'd then appreciate any suggestions for an alternative - a poncho with sleeves, a zipper, a hood and large enough to cover pack and at least knee length. Not too much to ask?!

TrekkInn does have this similar raincoat/poncho, but they don't list the weight.

Honestly, I found my Altus poncho to be a sweatsuit during my April/May Camino Primitivo.

After a short time in the rain its interior would be wetter than its exterior, not because of any leak, but because no vapour could escape.

For my next Camino I am considering either the Decathlon MT900 poncho or something else with pit zips and adjustable cuffs.

I wish I’d taken a rain jacket instead of a poncho. Because you can use a rain jacket as a windbreaker you get so much more use out of it. I had to buy one anyway in the end and barely used by (heavy) Altus poncho

I gave up on the Altus a long time ago as the sleeves were a total sweat trap, so I used it as a cape without putting my arms in the sleeves (and now use a cape) ... so you could go down that route, a cape, such as a cycling cape?

Honestly, I found my Altus poncho to be a sweatsuit during my April/May Camino Primitivo.

My experience has been similar. The amount of condensation you’ll get inside an Altus or any rain jacket or poncho has to do with how much ventilation there is and how much you perspire, which has to do with the shape you’re in and your walking pace. Slower pace and less sweating means less perspiration.

I’ve had a lot of breathable rain jackets — Marmot Precip, Mountain Hardware, North Face. I even bought an expensive Arcteryx, but found that none of them ventilated out the perspiration completely. Walking with a backpack, and heading up a significant hill, I would inevitably find the inside got wet.

I now use an Altus, even though it is not made of a “breathable” fabric. It’s not so much because it keeps me dry, but because it keeps out the rain so that my pack and its contents stay dry. I’ve never had so much perspiration on a rainy day that it penetrated my backpack! And it’s much easier for me than a pack cover and rain jacket, but to each his/her own. The other benefit I see with the Altus is that it is so easy to slip on and off your arms when the rain stops, which in turn lets you dry out a bit before the rain starts again.

I’m at the point now that I just don’t care about getting wet - it just makes the hot shower at the end of the day so much more luxurious!

I would love to try out the Decathalon MT900 poncho, with zippered underarms, to see if that helps but, alas, it can't be had in the US. (I also like the pocket slits so you can reach into your fanny pack to pull things like money and credencials out without unzipping the poncho).

I just purchased a Ferrino rain cape from Amazon. Couldn't find the Altus anywhere. I've always been a rain jacket/pant person however I did the Via Francigena the latter part of last year and the weather proved to be unpredictable and very challenging. The jacket pant pack combo became cumbersome and I'm off to do the via Plata October so I'm making the switch.

Heads up to anyone buying a Ferrino. I bought the Trekker about 10 or 12 years ago for use on the Levante. Fortunately, we only had one day of rain, but no sooner did I put it on than I started to sweat. I was wondering why there was so much more condensation inside than in my original Altus, which had bitten the dust a year earlier.

Someone on the forum pointed out to me that the Ferrino trekker is lined with a metallic material. Maybe not all are, but the trekker surely is. That’s for purposes of preventing hypothermia in cold weather. If you’re not walking in cold weather, though, all that the metallic lining does is add fuel to the indoor sauna you will be creating.

yes i just did my camino in May and i baught mine form Trekkin and slow but perfect delivery and the poncho was great

Exactly. Comes into its own in cold, rain, and wind. Quick to get into; just turn into the wind, hold it by the neck, flick it upwards, and the wind carries it back over you, slip your arms, in and you're almost finished. Body, head, and backpack in the cocoon in a jiffy. I understand that it doesn't work for others who have much experience. We find it light, and hard to do without.
