PRP for osteoarthritis in knee

Hi All,
I,ve been walking the via del plata for a month now and overall my knee has been not to bad. But I have to take Celebrix every day and some times 2. So when I get to Santiago I would like to get another injection of prp, seeing I want to keep walking the Portuguese, and beginning of September in Iceland . Dose any one know of a reputable medical center that offers this procedure, cheers.

Elke, I don't want to know the answer, and please don't post it....but are you supposed to have platelet rich plasma injections while you're taking Celebrex, which can lead to bleeding ...especially if you're taking more Celebrex than usual ( should be no more than 100mg twice a day)?

It looks as if you're setting yourself up for a problem. Talk to a doctor after you talk to a pharmacist ( who probably can't administer PRP anyway).

Pharmacists, many of whom can speak good English, are an excellent source of information for all things medical. Aside from speaking to a pharmacist, I advise going to the Centro de Salud (Local Health Clinic) or the ER of a hospital in a large town / city to seek assistance. Someone will speak English.

However, it would help if you had your PHP prescription to present. Even in English, an online translator app should be able to use your camera to do a credible translation into Spanish.

Also, absent being able to speak to a pharmacist or doctor in Spanish, or English, the Google and Bing online translators now handle two-way spoken translations fairly well. Practice before you need it.

If it were me, and based on prior experiences, I would use the Translator and Notes apps to prepare a script to hand (show) to a health care professional to read. This should make your circumstances and requests very clear.

The health care system in Spain is excellent! Over the years, I have paid out of pocket for doctor and hospital services. In Spain, a pilgrim will pay dollars for things that would cost hundreds of dollars in the US.

Parenthetically, I actually have private insurance coverage in the US that is usable overseas. But, because paying out-of-pocket was so reasonable, I have never needed to rely on insurance cover - knock wood.

Remember yes that anti-inflammatories are not helpful for the process of the PRP and walking or overdoing activities when freshly injected doesn't' result in benefit. I had a PRP treatment on my left knee a couple of months before my walk on the Primitivo last fall and just got another last week in preparation for a walk in Germany (the way of the powerful women starting in Erfurt) and on from there the end of August... Have you considered a Durolane injection? It might help more acutely or getting a really good knee brace that also helped me last year.... I invite seeing a well trained sports podiatrist that often can help withe a really decent knee brace... Buen Camino

Thanks for all your replies, yes I forgot you have to be off anti inflamatories and yes some none walking days. Overall I will see how it is going . Maybe I get away with out

I think you need someone to properly assess your gait before deciding if the patella straps are enough or if you need more. I know that my knee is now pretty unstable so the straps aren't enough for me - am just trying a brand new brace (3D printed SUPER light weight thin profile and designed for OA called Evoke) from a company Osskin. I am getting excited about the walk as I visit family in Germany every year and have discovered MANY Camino walks all over Germany and it is easier to get to them - just a train ride away so I simply extend my visit - walking will be better after I get my next new knee!!! Buen Camino!!!
