I set out early this morning to walk the trails and boardwalks at Burns Bog. About 1 km in, the path to access the trails became a river!

What I want to know is, when are you going to produce a book with all your images, and especially the evocative birds? I place my order here and now!
(this is an aside: anyone who has the time and the skills and the eye could beg permission to compile a folder using any photos from posters. Solely as a resource within the forum. Anyone think it would work? It would need real permissions from everyone. Maybe I am just getting carried away, it is a bit early in the day to be coming up with some of my hare-brained ideas. Next task: check origin of hare-brained!

1284?? A blighted year for the inhabitants of Hameln, (Hamblyn) Germany. Hopefully a more auspicious one for the Dutch. (I passed New Years day, 2011 in Hameln when on my way to SdC).

In 1284 Hameln had an infestation of rats and mice. The burghers offered a reward to anyone who could rid the town of the rats. A stranger appeared, piped the rats and mice out of town into the river. When he returned for his reward the burghers refused to pay. On 26 June the stranger reappeared whilst everyone was in church. He piped through the alleys and soon 130 children were tagging behind. He lead them away and they were never seen again. Only two children remained -one that was blind so he couldn't show where they others had gone, the other one dumb so he couldn't tell either. -thought to be based on an historical tragedy.

Bad weather has been predicted for some days now, so each morning I get inside my warm coat and head out for a ‘last’ walk before the snow and ice descend. I am just home from one such walk. I did my usual 35 minute trot along by the river and bought a few cards and then took the light rail tram to the far end of the city part of the Liffey. I checked, it is 4.6km from my house, so within the limit permitted. I was stopped in my tracks by a couple of carpets of pretty colour, and a small clump of snowdrops. I also found poor old Ana Livia shivering away in her pond. I said this before, but she has a few unofficial names as well, reflecting Dublin wit. Look her up if your curiosity is piqued! Then after taking one of Guinness factory, my phone decided it had had enough. When I got home, I connected it and as I knew, there was more than 60% battery. No idea what is happening, but I will pop my mobile charger into my pack from now on. So here is a taste of what I saw before the battery went for a sleep:.

Where did I walk? So far today, 30 meters from home. Just before sunrise I saw a thin stream of fog slowly flow downstream just above a frozen and snow covered river. You can barely see the end of it through the trees in the second picture.

I've been walking a virtual camino since Jan 3rd, most of my distance at the moment comes from walking to and from work. I live in an area full of trails, lakes, rivers but it has been tricky to get a walking/hiking buddy. My go to right now is one of our river dykes not far away. It spans about 15k, usually pretty quiet. This was the view a few weeks back not long after a storm had rolled through.

Motivated in no small part by you guys, I decided that it was true folly to sit at home and wait for the temperature to rise above 15 (F) and the sun to come out. So off to the Sangamon River forest Preserve we went. We didn’t last much more than an hour but being outside and off concrete is balm for my spirit.

We did something different yesterday; an urban walk with a friend along a rail trail in her neighborhood. It had been plowed but there were icy spots that had to be watched for. Instead of woods we were surrounded by apartment buildings, factories converted to condos and old homes where we tried to count the number of additions made in the last two hundred years. Despite the ice there still was a fair bit of bicycle usage there. I've got to say, it didn't take long for me to get tired of having a mask on constantly.

So very happy to wake to this and the chance for a snowy day morning trek through the Terra Nova Natural Area in a balmy (compared to above) -1 celsius temp. So quiet! Around here ( had to drive into the main town ) it was insanely busy with walkers. Was happy for my morning walk.

We have had a cold spell in Denmark. For weeks it has been minus degrees but sunny. Which is great when all you can do is walk due to the Corona restrictions.
Today I walked to one of the harbors in Copenhagen. I wanted to see the sun twinkling in the sea but that did not happen. The seawater was frozen! Sculptures of ice were formed by the frozen water. A hole had been made in the ice so that the people doing winter baths could continue in spite of the ice.



It was a beautiful walk, because of the sun and the restrictions, a lot of people were out walking and there was a cheerful and happy feel to the harbor. I saw several people jump in the waterhole and return with big smiles on their faces.

We are having a bit of winter this week -snow and below freezing. Here is a little forested area near my house. It is only about 300 m by 200 m, but it is delightful to walk through on the way to the grocery store.

Of course, the oldest, biggest and most experienced is called Umiak, he is a mountain veteran that used to pull heavy sleds on long and remote expeditions. He even worked as an actor playing a wolf one day ;-)
The two girls (Arial the white one and Ölina the one with the nearly black upper body) are smaller, a bit younger, but also had a career as professional sled dogs. They actually come from the same pack as Umiak.

Again some time to spend in the citycentre.
Visit to the site of the once monumental Abbey that was basically the foundation of the town.
Only the tower is preserved and some tombstones.
The tower has a metal construction and stairs and at the top you have a perfect view of towns twenty k.further away.
Also a tombstone from 1274.
Was able to reach my tenthousand steps for the day!

Even leaving the house at 10 to 7 left it too late. A fair number of runners surprised me from behind... Anyway, I will soon be able to leave earlier when the light improves, as it is doing, in its own time. I rediscovered a sculpture which clearly was relocated when the beautiful people began to tear down the old and build the New, Beautiful, Quayside offices and apartments. It is now located in a tiny garden inside the Port offices compound. Two photos show an east facing and a west facing view, taken within seconds...

Cultural heritage walk around the Castle of Heers. Dating back to the 14th century but completely abandoned. Impoverished nobility.

Yesterday's walk in the woods was very short. The snow on the trails have been packed down for several days but it rained the night before and it was still above freezing. That meant we would be walking along the top of the snow for a few steps and then sink ankle deep in slush. I was thinking of @SabineP's mud but at least this was cleaner. We saw snowshoe tracks and in spots they had sunk as deep as we had.

I'm reminded of an incident that happened to Nobel Prize winning physicist Richard Feynman. He was a fraternity pledge at MIT. The pledges were packed into trunks of cars and driven to the middle of nowhere in Maine and dropped off in the middle of night to find their way into a town. One pledge laughed at the situation. He said just follow the road and at each junction turn in the direction of the most electric and telephone wires.

We didn't need to do that today. Thinking that, it being sub_freezing, all the deep footprints from yesterday would be frozen tripping hazards Peg remembered a nearby little used paved and plowed road. That supplied our track today. The walking and scenery wasn't as nice but we still got a bit of nature.

Last weekend's snow is all gone. I really enjoyed it while it lasted. Temps have warmed up considerably with a beautiful day today before the rains start tomorrow. A walk along my usual morning paths with wonderful Anna's Hummingbird and Red-tailed Hawk sightings.

A little further on from the snowdrops is the ancient footbridge at what was once the ford. A local group have cleared it and re-set some of the stone surface. The road level has risen over the years and the water is piped underneath. However the recent rain had water running across the road this week. At the opposite side ot rhe road is the remains of the old mill, once driven by the leat from the stream. All that remains now is the skeleton of the water wheel and inside the derelict building the drive wheel. This area had a number of water driven mills in the past, none now working or in even in a good state of repair sadly.

I tried for ages this morning to attach this... and now I see it sitting as meekly as the middle animal in the post above... I went for a walk to avoid the rain and (shh!!!) other people. I got on a bus outside the front door, myself and the driver headed to Dublin Ferryport. Then I walked home. Not a pretty set of surroundings. However, without all the heavy lorry and storage facility activity, what would we have? Think about it..
Then, up in the sky, a double rainbow! I only caught one strand of it. Just over 4 km. It will do for today.

On a Mac you have a small (free) program called "Fotor Photo Editor" with which I make these collages.
I am sure there is something similar for windows users, but with that I am not familiar...

I like the way you have combined all the pictures. How does one do this?

Here is another way. On my Android phone using Google Photos I can select Library - Utilities - Collage - select the photos - Create (Create appears once two photos have been selected). Google does the arranging though.

With excellent weather 2 days ago, a walk on the Ayrshire Coastal Path beckoned. Drove 20 minutes then walked a 12 mile circular route, initially inland (shared cycle/pedestrian track), returning on the beach and the dunes.

In France shutters are painted pastel-blue to protect the wood from insects and fungi...

Pastel-blue (dyer's woad made from the plant Isatis tinctoria) has a fascinating history. In the middle ages the towns of le Lauragais, ie the area between Toulouse, Albi and Carcassonne became prosperous through trading woad. Today there are boutiques selling naturally dyed clothing and products...

No fair!!!! Beautiful pictures, Luka (for forum members who aren’t familiar with wikiloc, you can add pictures as you walk, and Luka added some beautiful ones to her tracks if you go to the link).

I remember that years ago we had some conversations about getting to the coast directly from La Nueva and continuing on to Ribadesella. I went into La Nueva, had a coffee, and then a few kms further on turned off to the coast. But as your tracks show, you can get there directly from La Nueva. Oh, would I love to go back to the Norte and add more “alternatives to the Norte’s asphalt” thread! Glad to see you enjoying some nice weather, Luka.

Beautiful weather again today. I met up with a friend and we walked two miles on the beach barefoot (flip flops in hand) to meet up with another friend for a mid morning coffee and pastry at an outdoor cafe before walking the two miles back.

I love this thread, and the one day a time on the camino thread as well. It requires no battling to find the right words! The other day I got a pm from someone who asked me if I had perhaps mistaken the location of one of my photos. I was so delighted, truly. I mean, how on earth am I going to remember everything from so long ago, on a camino that was the first - and in my mind, the last!. If and when I set out again, and I hope I do, on the Baztan, I will try to be more careful about logging details. I admire those who are so disciplined and organised. While we have a 5km restriction, my walks are repetitive - but for me, never boring. I am so grateful to be able to walk. Full stop.

A 7k return trek to the store this morning to buy - in anticipation of warmer weather - a protein feeder for the hummingbirds. I’ve let my walking lapse the last few weeks and was exhausted by the time I got home. These yellow crocuses at the base of this old, I think, oak tree, looked so cheerful on this bright sunny day.

Finally, a day with above freezing temperatures, sun, and winds below 15 mph. Perfect combination. First, I went down to Amish country,



and then I decided to poke around a town where I had been several times. I was gobsmacked by the lovely array of 19th (and early 20th) century homes.



The fields are still brown, not much activity going on, but surely spring can’t be too far away!

Wonderful photos! Those houses! Wow! So interesting to see the Amish buggies parked in front of an MCC (Mennonite Central Committee) thrift shop! I'll tell my great aunt about it - she worked for years with the MCC and helped run a thrift shop here.

Walking today at the Maplewood Mudflats Conservation Area in North Vancouver. A beautiful area I haven't visited for a while.

I did a cycle run this morning, 5.1km each way. I am not generally a disobedient civilian, so I will not appear on the national news for my tiny excess in distance!
I had 4 possible routes. This one was the winner, out along Dublin Bay on the north side. It was cold and very misty till the sun popped through. A lot of walkers and runners, and by the time I was heading home the cyclists were passing me on the dedicated track.
Photo three shows the Wooden Bridge, an access point for cars, cycles and pedestrians, out to the statue at the end, facing the open sea. I posted the statue photos before, maybe I will again soon.
