Where did you walk ( locally ) in 2021?

Not open for further replies.
Do people typically walk around your area with birds of prey perched on their arms?!

Good mud pictures, I’ll bet it brings back a lot of camino memories. I had to push my bike through mud that was nowhere near as bad, but it is impossible (for me anyway) to ride a normal bike when there is even a slight bid of mud.
No I don't think so!!
Never met him before but it was such a treat to see such a beautiful bird up close and personal!
The guy said that he lived and trained the birds on the farmland where we were walking
Sorry now that I didn't ask him for where he keeps the birds as would love to see more of them ...and so near as well to where we often walk

During lockdown my distance is restricted for two reasons, so the following photos have appeared before. Each view is a new one, though. Approaching from behind, the figures are forever frozen in time - aiming for the ship that would take them away from hunger and poverty. Masks have been placed on some of them. Relevant, but still graffiti. The final photo, one of many expressing gratitude to frontline workers.

Number one grandson has been staying with us again and so we went for my morning walk around the neighbourhood and to my local cafe except this time the focus was on exploring playgrounds.
IMG_20210122_120600.webp This playground is at the local school.
IMG_20210122_120621.webp
I then suggested that we walk down to the local beach but he wanted more playgrounds, so..
IMG_20210122_125044.webp and IMG_20210122_125239.webp
Then and only then was it okay for me to walk to my cafe and then only once I had promised to stop at the supermarket on the way home to buy some ice-blocks! 😁

Looks like my current walk of the "Ireland's west coast is on hold" - for 2 days in a row the temps are well below freezing (with wind gusts to boot) and the next 3 are suppose to be no better either but with an addition of snow tomorrow- at least through Wednesday morning. :(
If I was doing it solo - I most likely would've ventured out.... but since I am doing it with my wife I surely cannot "plod ahead and leave her behind (probably good couple of miles) on that lonesome Ireland Road ;)"... so I guess we both will just wait. For the record we have logged 16.7 miles each.... still working towards Crossmolina

I recon this actually fits better under the "where DIDN'T you walk...." moniker 😇

Perhaps surprisingly, it’s not uncommon here. By no means an everyday occurrence, but I’ve often seen it. The (massive) parrot I saw being walked on the arm several weeks ago was more unusual.

good morning - this is one link i found in my files (got other articles on MistleToe, but not in english.)

on walks here I see them everywhere. As kids we called them 'witches-brooms'. Also very well known/used for medicinal purposes w/ good results/effects. (can attest to that). Quite interesting plants those Mistletoes. Lot's of lore about them too. :)
best wishes - warmly, C
Hi there @amorfati1 ...Kissing beneath the mistletoe and learning about Druids and ancient civilisations didn't feature in my childhood. That's one reason I'm fascinated with european treescapes and spirituality. I love it when the seasons change and the shape of a tree's 'skeleton' emerges. Black + white photos are perfect for capturing the mystical side of nature. Lately I have been noticing how many frelon nests there are in the woods near where I'm staying. At first, seen from a distance, I thought the nests were mistletoe....

What a beautiful tea set!
So cheerful after your foul weather walk...here was my foul weather walk today.

Hi there, @Camino Chrissy
One of the things I love about the walking life is being invited into peoples homes. I like listening to family stories and discovering the history behind their 'treasures'. Every home is unique. The tea set in the photo above is an 'Henriot Quimper' faïence. I am passing this Covid-time in a house where collecting 'Henriot Quimper' was generational. Some HQ were given as wedding gifts, others passed down from mother to daughter. Not all of it is pretty.

Cheers!

Yesterday, while walking down a corridor of a hospital over in town, I came across this painting, an original oil, about 4 ft. tall. Imagine my surprise and delight to find this bit of nature in the sterile halls of a hospital. There is even the dappled light! (When I get the details, I will edit this post so I can provide the artist's name.)

I'm curious about those cobblestones running down the middle of the road. Are they what's left of the original roadway?

I guess they are quite recent. Can't imagine them being the originals from the Napoleontic time but I will try to get more information.

I am curious about the difference in upload/display times. Above, the photo by Icacos jumped into view immediately. I have not yet seen the clear photos from Sabine, after waiting for over a minute. I am using a MacBook at this moment. Any ideas? I usually go to the iPad to see photos...

Curious to hear also. I upload my pics from my cellphone ( Samsung A40 model, don't know if that is relevant? ).

Not relevant. The problem is with downloads and displaying. In order to properly display pictures in the correct places browsers have to know the size of the images, that is to say the height and width not the number of bytes. Webpages that are efficient pass that information along in the same HTML statement that says where the browser is supposed to get the picture from. The software that the forum uses does not do this. That means that the browser must completely download each picture first to determine the height and width. Most likely the browser will attempt to first download the picture that will be shown along with the text that you see. So in @kirkie's case she is seeing the one picture in @Icacos' post first. Then when she scrolls down there are a lot more that have to be shown all at once. That takes more time. Especially over slow connections and/or old software.

You most likely have noticed what happens when your browser is displaying webpages with efficient HTML statements. The text is rendered with blank rectangles occupying the places where the images go and then the rectangles are filled in. As far as I know, there is no standard that tells the browser to fill them one at a time or all at once more slowly so each browser may do the filling in its own way.

No problem viewing on ipad... maybe it is a setting on my MacBook. And you sure get a lot of mud!

We found a new walk today....almost
A shame we could not walk too far on it!!
Through our newly discovered park on our doorstep..we left it on the other side and in about 10 minutes reached the river Roding
Now I've known for years that there was a path along the river but never stopped to REALLY explore the valley
A little sign by the side of the road directed us to the path and off we went
No sooner started then we had to veer off onto another grassy path due to flooding after all the rain and then met a lake in the middle of the path!
So it was back onto a tarmac lane, and over the bridge where we had a walk in Ray Lodge park.
On the way back saw an old Victorian water pump and then part of a Roman road
As torrential rain expected here tonight it looks like this walk will have to wait! image.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpeg

The grid plan of the streets and the surviving trees that were planted there are all that remains of the Vancouver Wireless Military Station that existed between 1949 and 1971. A once thriving community, all the buildings were removed when the base was closed. An interesting place to walk in all seasons and a popular place to watch eagles.

Hmm: just as the future has accelerated in ways undreamed of, so too the past, so recent, disappeared, returned to their (almost) natural state. Thank you for your informative contributions.

It is winter here too. There were a few light snowfalls here recently. Two days ago I walked in one of our nearby conservation areas.

* When you walk in the woods you see a lot of trees.
* Frozen pond with beaver lodge and wood duck box.
* Trail runs through a red pine plantation.
* Earthen dam and barn.
* Hemlocks near a stream.
* Though the leaves a view of the site of an early 1800s grist mill.

This is a revisit of a castle/manor which we visited in the 2020 thread. This time there are better photos.

This is the old Elizabethan castle. The building sitting in the distance is the "new" castle used in the film "Yanks". These properties are held in trust by a charity as the original owners were not able to afford the upkeep and gave them to the nation to avoid taxes and other financial burdens.

Previously in order to keep these properties within a family, some resorted to marrying off a son to "dollar princesses" - rich socialites (usually American) who would fund their lifestyle in return for a title.

Not so sure why they had to go to these lengths when it is cheaper to downsize.

...down the hill, along the flat, up the cliff then through the hedge et voila .... the new neighbours! If not for the farmer's fence, Lambie would be bleating at the kitchen door, which would make a change from the increasing number of stray cats and dogs that slip out of the woods to come begging, spying, p.... and scratching on the window panes.

The forecast was dreadful so I stayed home and chose to watch a documentary about a most inspiring woman, recently deceased, to the great loss of every woman. And some men. I will not name her, as that is too much information on the open forum. I decided not to believe the forecast and had a quick trot around an inlet between two sides of the bay. Invigorating, and all the better for the inspiration I was so aware of in the life of the subject of the documentary. Barely visible in the second photo is the Hill of Howth, pronunciation of which is a trap for non native English speakers. A favourite place to walk, when there are no distance restrictions.

Looks like Kinky 1 may be your new neighbor.😉
ha ha ha! Perhaps I should rename it.... How about Lambie-Kinks? The black tail has a blond switch on it's end and the left hind hoof has a pretty white ring. I have a video of Lambie-K cavorting beneath the boughs of an evergreen tree, a solitary babe so sweet....Perhaps Kinky-Lamb sounds better??? Yes!

These were twin lambs Desdemona and Otello from last year. They had the same mum but one had a Suffolk tup dad and the other a Texel dad. Never happened to me before.

This weekend we had a regional holiday on Monday and so it was a long weekend. It is a special holiday for us as two of our children have their birthdays within 5 days.

We headed out to the beach at Shakespeare Regional Park. The kids and grandkids did some beachie stuff and I had a bit of a walk. Unfortunately things get a bit crowded as everyone else has a similar idea.

Here are the photos:

Done a nice little winter-walk of 13,5 km to the Castle "Falkenstein" in the Harz and visited the world-heritage site of Quedlinburg with it's medieval cathedral and half timbered houses on the way back home.

*Me on the beach
*I found these two fun painted rocks in the park, similar to geocashing, but not. On the backside of the rocks it says go to FaceBook "Evans Rocks around the world". I'm not on FB, but could still look at all the creative possibilities! People/families creatively paint rocks and place them "wherever". It brings happiness to people who find them...it did me! I saw some were even left in Hawaii and Alaska.

We got 18 inches (45 cm) of the wonderful stuff last night. After shoveling narrow paths to get to the street we took a short stroll though the neighborhood. I got the car cleaned off and driveway done afterwards. Tomorrow comes widening and removing snow from the roof. It was back and arm muscles that got the workout today, not the legs.

Oh, Kirkie.... thank you for these photos. The monument to the great hunger is one of my most dearly held on the face of the planet. I wish I could make a trek into Toronto, which is near-ish to me, to take pictures of the ”other half” of this monument — on the landing of Irish survivors of the coffin ships — at the lakefront in Toronto.
I sit — as an anthropological/historical advisor on a national monument committee here for an installation that is slated to be completed by the end of 2022 beside the National Archives in Ottawa.... in thinking about the installation, the committee is also thinking about how people will *interact* with the monument. The placing of masks, of stones, leaving of messages... these are things that installers all consider, and some (like the masks in this context) can be quite welcome by the creators.... while only that which seeks to destroy or undermine the message is considered “graffiti” — but of a very particular sort. For even “graffiti” can be welcome in some circumstances. It all depends on the installation. My work on the committee really surprised me/taught me a lot about what artists and committees anticipate and consider to be appropriate interaction with art.

Evan is a young man who committed suicide; the rocks are part of a campaign the parents began to promote suicide prevention around the globe. The group is private (I checked) so I don’t know what the logic of the stones is exactly, but people are encouraged to leave the rocks to draw attention to suicide prevention.

Yesterday on a 5 mile walk in the park I found an unpaved, rather hidden path in the park, so it was kind of a little adventure...not pretty, but scruffy and held my interest. The 3rd picture is of the very long pine needles about 10-12" of the Long Pine tree, used for weaving intricate baskets. Classes are offered to learn the craft.

Not pathetic. Why would you even think that? Seriously...
My thoughts also. They're a keyhole we can all look through into another reality, seeing as though through your eyes. It may be familiar and ho-hum for you, but it's pretty exotic for the rest of us. The same goes for each of us.

Thank you and very true.
My pictures looked a bit scruffy and colorless. Speaking of exotic, that is a good word to describe the beauty of the lush tropical foliage of your post today.
Here is a colorful photo from yesterday's sunrise.🙂

Hello @linkster

How far from the hammock was the crocodile? Did you know there were crocodiles present when settling down for the night? Were you scared?????

Cheers
I passed several alligators (I think crocs are saltwater) in the Clay Gully that parallels the trail. The campsite was about a mile from the Clay Gulley. Alligators can wander for miles looking for food and water. Several years ago, I had a group of Boy Scouts out for a wilderness survival clinic. We came across this bad boy on the trail (my son or the gator? 🤔) . He was at least a couple of miles from the nearest water source, and many more miles from the lake or tributary.

I was not scared, but I was not looking to get real close. There are wild boar, bobcat, coyotes, deer, snakes, and bugs. There were signs of the pigs rooting around, but I did not see any. The coyotes were howling while I was sitting around the fire.👣:D:cool:Gator.webp

I took the first photo last week. I was shocked into stopping and taking the photo. The brand being advertised belongs in Glasgow, and here I see it in inner city Dublin. It is worth a bit of searching.
This morning I was so early I was not confronted by a single runner. I decided to retrace my steps instead of doing a circle. Photos 2 and 3 show a contrast between reflection and reality. Looking straight ahead, it was very difficult to see the real dawning light because of the effect of the artificial lights. I think that is a metaphor, and I now have to research how many dawns there have been since the beginning of time. Oh dear, will lunch ever get prepared?
