Stupidest Thing I’ve Done on The Camino!

Let me start off by saying that I have done 10 Caminos. This is not to brag but to say that I should have known better.

Before my last one, my grandkids convinced me that I should document the journey with a GoPro and related equipment. I suspect that there was YouTube influences at work.

Despite the fact that I am older than dirt, I bought into it.

Seriously how can another 25 pds do any harm?

I suspect you know the answer.

Oh well. If you want to see the footage of someone swearing over 32 days, I can send it to you.

Join us from Logroño to Burgos in May 2025 or Astorga to OCebreiro in June.
The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
And you didn't send it all ahead after the first day? I'm impressed with your stubborn determination. 🙃

Thanks for the chuckle, @kfw. Yup.
Should'a. Known better, that is. Now you do!

(I throw out old receipts and brochures every few days to avoid unnecessary weight - having learned that early on from @SYates .
Taking a GoPro? Never in a million years. But then I don't have Grandkids and avoid YouTube like the plague that it is.)

I had one once and got rid of very quickly afterwards. I do though have an upside down HD video of me riding a horse. Have never got round to editing it as my equestrian skills look better from that viewpoint.

Ah, an Oscar performance in the "Short Documentary" category for sure.
As a grandfather of male offspring, with a bit of a sense of humor themselves, when I approach them at Christmas to go Caminoing with Pop next year, them sharing the GoPro
is a spectacular idea. Thanks for the heads up.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

Next time make your grandkids walk and have them carry the equipment!

You have a great sense of humor about this. Made me smile this morning.

pds = Pounds? I have a GoPro, probably far less than a kilogram. On Camino or another trail, I would likely use it. But not 25, 10, or even two pounds of "related equipment."

Maybe also my drone, that allegedly is able to follow slightly behind me on its own. But that, too, is far less than a kilogram.

About a month ago, I got stuck in the mud while walking from Santo Andre de Teixido to Cedeira on Camino do Mar. A colossal truck (38-tone, according to one of the forum members) had made a mud river, but I wasn´t as careful as I should have been because I mistakenly thought it couldn't be that deep. Nor did I plan on falling into it until I slipped, and my left leg was firmly placed deep in the mud. I couldn't extract myself due to the mud's weight. I am only 5'2'', and the mud reached my thighs. I had no idea that the mud could weigh so much. After struggling for about 30 minutes, I called 112, but they said they wouldn't be coming because they didn't know where to find me! They couldn't locate me by my cellphone signal, a technology I took for granted in South Korea or the United States. Many thoughts about the life I have lived and the consequences of possible death flashed through my mind. The worst thing that came to my mind was the possibility of being introduced as a pilgrim undone by the evil mud pond in the newspaper article. As I was feeling hypothermia, a truck driver (possibly the one who made the mud trail) came by and extracted me. He was probably thinking that was easier than running me over flat. After carefully assessing me up and down, he put a plastic sheet in his passenger seat and took me to the nearest town. He very sensibly dropped me off in front of a laundromat. Again, my faith in the Spaniards did not fail me. After returning, I sent him a lovely Christmas card.

Quit. Stupidist thing I did was quit. I made it one day- got to the top of Alto de Perdon and called a cab to come get me. It has haunted me since. It was also the correct decision at the time. But I am headed back (hopefully) this summer to try it again, 50 pounds lighter and with more humbleness, grace, and humility the second time. And less planning. I don't feel a need to regiment myself into set distances each day that turned out to not be achievable for me and where I am at. This time I will give myself the freedom to just walk and stop when I feel like it and if there is no place to stay or eat or a stage where I can't make the whole distance safely (looking at you Estella to Los Arcos), then I will take a cab or a bus forward and start again in a safe spot. I mean, a pilgrim 700 years ago wouldn't have turned down the offer of a ride on the back of a cart thru a hard spot, why should I beat myself up if I need the modern version of that?

Sure, why not? Buen camino!

The first time (and the last because I never repeated the CF), I made it up to Alto de Perdon, huffing and puffing; I was amazed to see a group of young pilgrims who ordered pizza delivery. They were enjoying the well-earned pizza up there, talking and laughing. It was a joy to see them having fun. Some of the reasons for my Camino are the sense of accomplishment, the joy of being in the beautiful nature, and the occasional connection with people, no matter how short that may be. Everyone should do the Camino in a way that is most suitable and joyful for them.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.
