That day I walked to Muruzábal where I stayed in the lovely albergue El Jardín de Muruzábal. The host informed us that the nearby church of Eunate would be open that afternoon. So after our showers, a camino friend and I walked the aprox. 2.5 km downhill through the fields and visited this beautiful and special place.
There were only a handful of other people, among them a young Spaniard who had been visiting Eunate with his Latin American guest. They gave us a lift back to the village and we were really grateful for that.

Iglesia de San Salvador 13.11.2004.jpg

Almost hidden in the countryside east of Palas de Rei near Portos on the CF the 12th c. Iglesia de San Salvador de Vilar de Donas was for centuries the official burial place of the Chevaliers de Santiago.
... Hopefully this still is a special site of eternal peace .

Sometimes, old and new lie only a few steps apart, like at this place near Cirauqui where you walk over this ancient Roman bridge and only a moment later you get to cross a busy highway on a modern overpass.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Before reaching Logroño, one of those special camino places.
I got my stamp at the table outside María's house and rested for a while on a nearby bench. Then a younger man came out and handed me a plate with a piece of cake. What a lovely surprise!
I wonder if he or another family member continues the tradition of Felisa / María with their little stand now that María has passed on.

Located + - 100 m. from the main Samos monastery La Capela do Ciprés which contains the oldest remnants of the original complex may once have been a monastic cell. This chapel is named for an adjacent millennial cypress tree 25 m. tall, one of the most notable trees in Spain.

In Ages at the south side of Iglesia de Santa Eulalia a farming path/dirt road begins. It will cross the rio Vena via this bridge.

The dirt road continues south to Zalduendo on route N 120 where an old camino path parallel to the highway goes west to Burgos.

Some hostales or hotels do not look appealing on the outside but once inside they are quite ok.
This is the one at the gasstation of La Brujula.
The last etapa on the Vasco Interior before reaching Burgos.
Seven Celsius when we left this day four years ago.

We called them directly instead of using a bookingsite and as always we got a sharper price this way.

This bi-level door front depicts Saint James in two different guises associated with his hagiography.
On the lower level he is a gentle pilgrim wearing a hat and cape, holding a staff and shell. The upper level depiction is as Matamoros or Moor slayer riding a spirited white horse beneath which lie slain Moors.

While nursing a drink watching the world pass by the window on my last afternoon in Santiago I happily sat for hours in the historic Cafe Casino which has existed since 1873; fortunately Wifi was a recent addition.

Two pics today from four years ago. Crossing the border between France and Spain ( and the river).
Spent the night in Irun where I walked across the border to take the HST from Hendaye via Paris back home.
Two weeks earlier I did the same three k.walk to get into Irun.

I only walked a very short stage from Cardeñuela Riopico to Burgos where I checked in mid-morning at the Hotel Norte y Londres. I then had the whole day for visiting the cathedral and exploring the city, followed by a good night's sleep in my private room, a welcome change after over two weeks of communal accomodations.

On the way from Burgos to Hornillos del Camino I took this photo somewhere after Rabé de la Calzada.
This is the landscape that comes to my mind when I think about my 2017 camino. That's why I chose this picture for the front cover of my camino photo book that I had later printed.

Night train/ Paris to Bayonne
photo taken October 14, 2013

Night train .jpg

To begin past CFs I often rode the train de nuit/ night train in a couchette/berth from Paris/ gare Austerlitz to Bayonne. It felt magical to fall asleep in Paris at 11pm, hear/feel the carriages move through the night and awaken in Bayonne at 7am.

I enjoyed seeing the rolling landscape while riding the then two-car local TER train from Bayonne to the Basque town of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, named such because it is at the pied /foot of a port /pass crossing the Pyrenées.

I am still getting into the rhythm of the Camino and didn't take any photos yesterday. This old body is starting to get a bit creaky in places.

I had an unfortunate fall about six weeks before I left that briefly hospitalised me and I worked hard to recover my fitness and thought that I had done so

Another view from the same spot as my last photo, just North of the hospitals in North Madrid.

I did not stay at Ermita de San Nicolás but I definitely wished I had when I saw it, and even more so when I later heard fellow pilgrims talk about their experiences there.

For me this red door of the municipal albergue was an entrance to another way of life, the camino way; here, as always, began my 11th and last CF which later would be truncated near Azofra after a serious fall.

Early morning set off from Attapuerca and heading to Hornillos. Dark at the start and then the sky exploded on the long trudge to Burgos and making sure to turn left at McDonalds and take the river bank route

Just after dawn in a cold mist I set off alone walking west, thrilled to be moving towards new adventures on this 3rd CF but my first in winter. As always I would follow the Valcarlos alternate route.
