The heat is too much for some. Honestly, it almost did me in today.

How very sad! I remember that stretch and even as an avid hiker it was brutal, especially because of the rain and slippery slopes. Poor man. May he rest in peace.

An older pilgrim, I believe from Great Britain, died overnight in the albergue I was staying at, our second night from SJPDP.

When we were walking in July this past summer, there was a bad heat wave and we felt it prudent to take a bus on 2 different days for 10 minutes to shave off some miles and prevent any ill effects from the heat. So sorry about this pilgrim and for his family. 😪

Yes. This. It hurts us responders when Death wins the contest.

For my adoptive mother, who'd lost her mind long before, and for my birth mother, whose cancer burned through all the painkillers, Death was mercy. But for the family of a guy I worked years ago (who succumbed to a pulmonary embolism despite a 30 min hospital code), or for my son's father in law, who was worked for 30 min before the doctor pronounced him over the radio - like I said, it hurts when Death wins those.

May this pilgrim's family find comfort in their sorrow.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

I gave CPR to a stranger who had a MI.
We worked for a while to get him back but he was gone from the getgo.
The PD told me what had ultimately got him.
I had talked and joked with him 5 min earlier
Then he was gone.
The solace was that we tried our best.
I hope the Pilgrims went easy.

You made a good safe decision. That is the type of pilgrim the Camino wants to welcome.

Looks like his family was with him, and they worked him hard. Very few non first responders know that, unlike the TV, only about 20-30 % of cardiac arrests "come back."
I'm going to make those numbers a bit more disheartening. The survival rate in out of hospital arrests with CPR is about 4%. If the arrest was for reasons other than an MI (heart attack) it is even lower.

Even with good CPR the loss of brain is at a rate of about 11% per minute of arrest. Thus if CPR is needed for more than 10 minutes there is very little chance an even partially normal brain will survive.

But, you never know who is the miracle person who arrests with everything NOT in their favour who has the complete recovery.

So , sad. It happens to me guiding an expedition in the Venezuelan Amazon for the infamous British Cameraman, Nick Gordon (51 at that time, 2004) and the most expert men in tarantulas, the canadian Rick West. Nick Gordon(+) had an cardiac arrest during our third day of expedition, recording a documentary about Giant Goliath bird eater tarantulas. I performed 30 minutes of CPR while we got to the hospital by 4x4 car. Very hard moment, when you hace to face that dead wins over the rescuer efforts. RIP pilgrim
