Is Ponferrada, not Sarria now the closest start point if you want ti receive your certificate? Is this correct. I will be walking from SJPP but husband will be joining me in Ponferrada for the last bit. Can he get his passport there or should he get one in Madrid when he arrives there? Thanks

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
No, the requirement has not changed. You must walk the last 100 km to Santiago to receive a Compostela certificate. He can purchase his credential (pilgrim passport) at Albergue parroquial San Nicolás de Flüe in Ponferrada.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Yes, Ponferrada is slighly over 200 km from Santiago. Portomarin is LESS than 100 km from Santiago and does not qualify you for the Compostela, if that was your starting point.

Hope this helps.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Coming from the Frances, yes, Ponferrada is the nominal starting point for cyclists. It is something like 220 km +/- from Santiago.

I spent some time as a volunteer in the Pilgrims office in StJPDP and from memory credentials were only issued to people there and I usually helped them fill in the details.
That was some years ago. It was my understanding to stop tourists staying in albergues which apparently happens a lot. People told me on my Camino’s people check out and drive off in their own cars. Perhaps another explanation?
Oh well just like those that check in to steal stuff it’s virtually impossible to close all loopholes.

You can buy an official credential in many albergues along the Way. We have sold them at all the ones where I have worked.
