Anyone know if you can or have got a pair of Salomon Quest boots resoled (UK)? Great boot only soles wear out far too quickly for boots costing 120 sobs. If not can anyone recommend a boot that can?

Thanks

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-
I don't think they can be, but there are boot resolers in the UK who would be able to confirm that if you contact them directly. Try any reputable internet search engine.

I'm not sure what life you have achieved from your boots, but they do appear to be a design that will be very comfortable but won't have a particularly long life. My experience with boots having similar sole construction varies from getting a few hundred to perhaps a bit less than two thousand kilometres of use from them.

If you want longer lasting soles, you need to be looking for harder compositions, like Vibram. The depth of the wear layer is also important. Many makers reduce effective tread depth, presumably to reduce the overall weight of the boot or shoe.

All these things are compromises. The perfect balance between comfort, grip and sole life is very much a personal choice.

Try MEINDL. I have used the Meindl Bhutan for a number of years and my local supplier says providing the uppers are still good they can be sent back and refurbished complete with new soles! I never get that far as I send my old ones up to my son in Scotland where he can tramp the wards in them! (hospital! he is a nurse) Worth a try as they are Brilliant boots anyway and come in half sizes.
Yours aye ,

I have had Vasques and Salomons resoled by a local (Ottawa) specialist, recommended to me by an outdoor equipment shop. The Salomons were resoled twice and have done three caminos before they were retired.

I have enquired about resoling in the past, both with the manufacturer (Hi-Tech, "no sorry") and my local shoe repair man. The latter said he could do something cheap and nasty which he wouldn't either recommend or guarantee. The problem is that to do the job properly requires specialist moulding machinery. The cost of sending the boots to Sydney, having them fixed and returned wouldn't be worthwhile for the boots I wear. Better to buy a new pair at only slightly higher cost. Consequently I buy a new pair every year, and sometimes two pairs!

In the bad old days I had a pair of all leather Scarpas with screw-on commando soles which I had resoled several times and relined once before they faded away.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

Philla:

I am sure if you looked online you could probably find some one to resole your boots. That said, why would you want to wear the same pair for another walk. I realize some do but even if the sole are good you have worn down whatever inner cushioning the boot might have had. I keep old shoes for walks around the neighborhood but would never wear the same pair to walk a second Camino.

Just my opinion.

Joe

This is a good firm which I have used in the past for Scarpa boots. Worth talking to.

Contacted LSR who replied:-

Hi,

Sorry we don’t have the original soles but can fit an alternative for £66 per pair plus £8 return postage.

After reading all replies thinking of going down the new boot route. With the cost of repair coming to 82 quid with postage added to any money I get off Santa (been a good boy) plus New Year Sales won't be far off a pair of Meindl Bhutan ( Tried a pair on today well made quality boot)
Thanks everyone

A word of warning; yes you can get boots resoled in UK, I've had it done to two pairs. Both came back superbly comfortable and both leaked within a few months. Maybe you can live with that, I could then but wouldn't now.

Maybe I am lucky, but I have a pair of Hi-Tech boots bought 10 years ago and which I have used for many treks in Nepal and about 4500 kms in Spain as well as local one day walks and they are still good for more Caminos. They have been resoled twice with Vibram by the specialist Vibram repairer in Sydney.
Four years ago I bought a pair of Sportiva boots as backup for local use.The stitching in the uppers broke in several places after less than 500 kms. The manufacturer claimed this was fair wear and tear!

Hi AJ
Yes I used the mob in Hornsby. I delivered and collected and the cost for replacement soles was $110 2 years ago. As the boots fit me so well and would have cost around $240 to replace I was happy to pay the $110. Actually he replaces the whole underside of the boot in one piece which is bonded to the upper under high pressure

Resoling may not be the answer. What about the rest lf the structure of the shoe? How do they feel when you twist them, bend them?

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I have two identical pairs of Meindl goretex boots (because they are the most comfortable boots I have ever worn). This model is now discontinued and I have had both sets of boots re-soled with Vibram soles by the local guy at the station in Tunbridge Wells. I did look on the internet and there appear to be loads of places to get them done. Mine retailed at £180 per pair. I get them re-soled at £50 per pair and are as good as new. Whilst the new soles are thicker than the original they seem softer and do not seem to wear as well but I get approx 600 miles out of them. Other than that they have proved to be just as good as the originals. I've done four full caminos, two with my re-soled boots.

I met a woman in Pamplona who had walked from Haarlem, NL in Lowa boots and the tread was gone. She found a shoe repair shop there that was able to replace the Vibram soles for €35 and in only 2 hours. I didn't see her again so I don't know how it turned out. It hadn't occurred to me that hiking boots could be resolved if you have the right ones. My friend was told when she purchased the boots that the soles would be good for about 1500 km which was about the distance she had walked.

Our daughter ( @thehappyhermit ) has been with us for Christmas. She had her expensive boots resoled by Lancashire Sports Repairs so you might like to check them out.
