newcomer with questions about Le Puy-en Velay to Conques

It is a gorgeous walk. I had no idea it was ranked as one of the most difficult... I walked it at age 56 and the Stevenson and St Guilhem (which overlapped the Le Puy route for a few days) a later ages, and loved them all. Each time I started out in decent walking shape but overweight, and...

    Excessive heat

I bought a small spray bottle that fits in my pack's belt, and fill it with water. I spritz my shirt and hat and face whenever they've gotten dry from the last spritz. It feels like it cools me down about 5F/3C each time... works great!

    Demographics of Le Puy

Last September, when I walked from Conques to Pamplona, I noticed that there were two main demographics: young French people just out of college or between jobs, and retired people (60+). Many of the camino family I fell in with had walked across all or most of France, and were planning to...

    Neurodiversity on the Camino

It's probably far too late to switch plans (even if you love my idea and want to), but... the French chemin paths I have walked are less crowded, much quieter (most of the time), in green and calm countryside routes, and the auberges I've stayed in were generally small and quiet. Dinnertime...

One month out…this is getting real!

Stopping in Orisson is a great idea, I'm glad you set that up!

One month out…this is getting real!

I'm late to your walking prep party, sorry! I like all these thoughts you're receiving here. I am going to advocating an idea I've had since I ended my camino last year in Pamplona (as planned)... For me, it being day 28 of my walk, the hill on the way between SJPdP and Roncesvalles was...

    GPS tracks for Via Francigena

I was thinking of doing this starting a couple of weeks later... but it sounds like the part through the Alps will be impassable by mid-September most years?

Best 7 to 14 days on the Chemin du Puy?

I've loved almost all the Le Puy (except maybe a bit of hot dry cornfields which are just like home, a few days before SJPdP. Having walked that far, the walk up and over and down to Roncesvalles is not that hard -- I can't imagine how that would be for a pilgrim's first day! I only got as far...

Best 7 to 14 days on the Chemin du Puy?

Yes, definitely start with mass! Well worth it, even though you lose an hour or two to the mass, tour, and blessing...

Le Puy-en-Velay to St. Privat d’Allier in one day?

Oh, yes, the uphills around there taught me to take small steps... I was huffing my way up slowly, when four mountain bikers passed me, dodging rocks and boulders, going about 10km/h!

Illness after Orio to Zumaia on Tuesday (June 25, 2024)

On the off chance that others are dealing with the same... my friend is walking with her 18 year old son, they started from San Sebastian last week... on their 3rd day, they walked from Orio to Zumaia. Her son has been ill ever since that 3rd day (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach...

Still! (But actually, searching, then reading...)

    Supplies on the CdN

An old thread... but these days the costs for checking a bag can be so high, I think it reverses the equation for some of us, leaning toward buying poles and other non-carry-on-able things after arriving in country. Also, the last time I checked my pack on the way to a camino walk... a baggage...

The REAL Camino Viejo - a new project for a Camino alternative.

So... aren't there official camino-supporting organizations that try to encourage the development of resources for each route? Like albergues, sources of food and water, support from local communities (and perhaps avoiding communities that for some reason don't want pilgrims to pass through...

    Albergue Etiquette

If I don't need to be reached in emergency... I generally set my phone to Do Not Disturb *and* set it to Airplane mode... that keeps anything from coming through until I undo it. And it saves a lot of battery if you are distant from cell or WiFi sources (in which case your phone increases its...

    Albergue Etiquette

I think "favorite" contacts still ping through when silenced... They seem to on my Android phone anyway.

Do you drop any personal restrictions on Camino?

Well, you live in a town where the streets are extra wide because of your Winter snows... (I was thinking of moving there, and it was an interesting place to visit!) I think that the amount of pavement is an impediment to chatting or being casually "neighborly" with anyone not on your side of...

Where to start past Le Puy to save 4-6 days

I see some good ideas above... I'd say don't skip until you have to, the first parts are the best, go as far as you can, then take transportation to wherever gets you home...

LIVE from the Camino Mountain route from Soto de Luiña

This discussion is making me want to plan to do both! Mountain first, then backtrack, and walk the coastal!

The one thing I should have done before I left for the Camino

A friend advised me to get a debit/credit card that does not charge, or absorbs ATM fees (in my case, Charles Schwab). Using that card in Europe, and refusing the "do you want to exchange for local currency" query, I have NO fees for any of my cash withdrawals. Just Euros withdrawn at the rate...
