Dear all, I am currently walking to Villafranca de Bierzo. Tomorrow I am planning to attamp once more the Dragonte route. LIVE from the Camino The Adventures of Dani7 on the Camino Francés

Without the hospitaleros voluntarios pilgrims would be hard pressed to make it to the other side. You are needed more than you can imagine. Your smiling faces and kind gestures and help at the end of a long day are balms for our bodies and our souls. Thank you for service. You are more than...

...be arriving in Spain for our time as Hospitalero Voluntarios. Your accounts have convinced me that there are still pilgrims like you who will need our care. Enjoy your walk tomorrow. I would take the traditional path by the road if it were me but who knows if you will brave the higher...

Villafranca del Bierzo to O Cebreiro - Pradela route

I have walked the Pradela route twice and recommend it as one of the high spots on the whole Camino . I spoke with some who walked the Dragonte route and she said it was rough and not marked well. She didn’t advise it to anyone .

Villafranca del Bierzo to O Cebreiro - Pradela route

I know this thread is about the Pradela option from Villafranca, but the maps posted above clearly show that there is a third option, the Dragonte route. So I thought I’d add a bit about it here. I have never walked the Dragonte route, but last fall tried to help a forum member get some more...

Villafranca del Bierzo to O Cebreiro - Pradela route

...crossing the bridge at Villafranca del Bierzo and seeing the option on the right. I'd already decided ahead of time I wasn't going to go Left on the Dragonte, so I looked to the Right and thought "No way do I want to climb that big hill either." Unfortunately I now see that was a big mistake.😐

Villafranca del Bierzo to O Cebreiro - Pradela route

...signage. The first part (I can't remember how far or how long) is very steep. Incredibly steep! But after that it's not so bad. I tried the Dragonte route last year and got lost. I had to turn back. There was no signage after Villar de Corrales. But with GPS (which I don't use) you could be OK.

Villafranca del Bierzo to O Cebreiro - Pradela route

...For the Pradela route take Calle Pradela up the hill after crossing the bridge leaving Villafranca. The main camino route passes the Albergue de la Piedra. To take the Dragonte route you take a left to cross a bridge before reaching that albergue.

Villafranca del Bierzo to O Cebreiro - Pradela route

The Pradela route or as Gronze labels it Camino de la montaña is not the same as the Dragonte route. There are three routes out of Villafranca del Bierzo. Here's more info on the Dragonte route. http://trekopedia.com/wp-content/uploads/Trekopedia-Guide-to-the-Ruta-Dragonte-v1.0-May-2018.pdf

Villafranca del Bierzo to O Cebreiro - Pradela route

I am curious that this is called the "mountain route" since the Dragonte option seems more mountainous. I walked the Pradela route a few years ago, and found the signage at that time to be a bit confusing. However, I never felt lost because the valley must stay on your left, you can often see...

Villafranca del Bierzo to O Cebreiro - Pradela route

I turned left and walked up the hill to take the Dragonte route. It was beautiful for many reasons and will really allow you to get into yourself. However, if you like well marked trails, coffee shops and people, then Dragonte may not be as rewarding for you. In that case, go right along...

In-depth Guide to the Ruta Dragonte

Dear Stratophile, I am planning to walk the Ruta Dragonte and I wish to obtain the Guide book you refer to via the Treopedia link but cannot find it. Could you please help me to obtain the PDF format. This will be my second attemt to walk it as in the 2016 when I first walked the camino...

Longest sections of Camino Frances without facilities

I think the winner is the Dragonte variant from Villafranca del Bierzo to Las Herrerias. Some 25km without shops, bars or anything besides the occasional fountain. But that would be easy by itself, it's the elevation profile that makes it challenging... On the regular Camino Frances, Carrion...

Is Zpacks Vertice rain jacket worth the investment for ultralight hikers?

...section where the roads are quite "wild" (natural? In the sense of "little people walking it"), but i guess the handfull people going over Dragonte are not that many in the first place and even this remote stretch of Camino is not to be compared to Bushwhacking. But there will be the...

    Hiking poles vs staff

...The next morning, as I prepared to leave my lodging, Tizona leapt into my hand, and off I went, knowing at that moment I would take the Dragonte. It was still dark as I hiked up the hill to Dragonte and Tizona was a reassuring guardian as I walked past valleys and glens where dark shadows...

Tips for Tackling O Cebreiro Hill During Your Camino Walk

...Pradela variant route are the same. A link to a Google Map centered on the bridge is given below. I would give instructions to get on the Dragonte route by saying that immediately after you cross the bridge exiting Villafranca take the leftmost road at the fork (ignore the rightmost road...

    Off road caminos

You may walk from Villafranca to O'Cebreiro via Ruta Dragonte. Most people would get off that and continue on CF Las Herrerias. Alternatively, you may walk from Villafranca via Paradela to the outskirts of Trabadelo. After O'Cebreiro, you're stuck on asphalt most of the time.
