    Dragonte Route

...right from Villafranca is intense. Then it levels out quite nicely, very peaceful. Then after Pradelo the decent is very, very steep. There is a caution symbol on the map indicating where this is. 😅 Have you walked the Dragonte? I wonder how steep it is. 😎👣🌻 August 7, 2019 Villafranca below.

    Dragonte Route

May I make a correction? Nevermind, I will anyway. It will take you directly [up to Pradelo and then] down into Trabadelo. Remember the up part. 😓

    Dragonte Route

I’ve not walked the Dragonte but did the option to the right out of Villafranca, it was amazing. It will take you directly down into Trabadelo. From my map I do see the possibility to get to Trabadelo from the Dragonte from San Fiz de Seo with some back tracking. Then take the same way back to...

    Dragonte Route

I don't know if this is the place to ask this question, but here goes. If not, please let me know where. If I take the Dragonte Route out of Villafranca, is there a trail that leads down to Trabadelo or will I have to walk it the entire way? My plan is to meet a friend in Trabadelo for the...

    Is my guide book accurate?

These books are guidebooks and not detailed scholarly studies based on hours and hours of original own research. The main author, Abbé Georges Bernès, was one of the French pioneers in making the pilgrimage and the pilgrimage roads to Saint James in Galicia known again after the horrors of...

    Is my guide book accurate?

...that my book was based on the second (revised) edition of the original. If you wonder about the accuracy of the description of the route, check out what they say about the Dragonte route: "... after trying three tracks though (sic) scrubland, the search for the route had to be abandoned."

Exploring Route Variants on the Camino Frances: Natural and Historical Highlights

Thank you! Just found this and you answered my questions on BOTH variants I'm considering.

Are the Scenic Routes on the Camino Frances well marked?

Of all the alternative Routes on the Frances i took so far only the Dragonte was not well marked and should not be done without a GPS track of some kind. And the river route into Burgos is a bit hard to find, but thats only the start, after that its pretty much "follow the river". All the...

Is the Napoleon Route from SJPP defintely closed until March?

It definitely seems like more of a mountain hike than a typical camino trail from what I have read at this point. Navigation seems to be one of the bigger challenges. Appreciate your perspective having attempted it previously Tincatinker. For us this will be a call at the time with careful...

Is the Napoleon Route from SJPP defintely closed until March?

The last time I did walked from Villafranca de Bierzo to O Cebreiro and beyond in early April there was enough snow about to provide all the challenges I was in need of. I’ve failed to complete the Dragonte variant twice without snow to add to the fun. Each to their own

Is the Napoleon Route from SJPP defintely closed until March?

We are going to start mid March through Valcarlos, then have a close look at the Dragonte Route at the other end. There are some interesting descriptions and pictures online that suggest this might be an interesting higher alpine substitute. If you are leaving in January, I don't know if this...

Which are the “wilder” (least paved, most rural) Spanish routes?

I'll jump in here: The one alternative i know that is not on Gronze is the Dragonte route from Villafranca del Bierzo to Las Herrerias. Likely the most remote/untravelled of the alternatives. It does involve a fair bit of paved roads, but also some pretty wild dirt trails. However, it likely is...

    Safety on the Salvador

I worry about the dogs as well. I had one chase me around town a few years ago while walking el dragonte. Good news is it never bit me and helped me get off track and add 10 more km to my day!! Everyone I have spoken with has said as long as you keep cool, back up and give more room between you...

GPX for alternate route from (Irache through Luquin)?

The Dragonte is one of the routes in the file I mentioned in post #3 above.

GPX for alternate route from (Irache through Luquin)?

...be in the "buen camino" app as well. As are most other alternative routes. There is another which i know is not in the app, called Ruta Dragonte, from Villafranca del Bierzo to Las Herrerias. Also incredibly beautiful, but by all chance the hardest section of any of the CF. The gpx file and a...

    Alto Pradela route - amazing.

Oh the Dragonte scares me so much and it takes me 2 days to get to Roncesvalles, but who knows...

    Alto Pradela route - amazing.

Never walked the valley route. First time, i walked via Pradela. Loved it, but kinda hard. Second time, i walked the Dragonte variant. Even more stunning, but a very exhausting walk so maybe not for everybody. But for those who enjoyed the walk from St.Jean to Roncesvalles, i recommend looking...

Finding my way along the route

...areas, the arrows can be anywhere – on lampposts, traffic signs and walls. Sometimes they might be at ground-level on kerbstones, so look down as well as up. Don't take the Dragonte route from Villafranca del Bierzo, if you don't have GPS or apps. It is not well signposted. (I didn't have GPS.)

    Renting horses to O Cebreiro

Last year, arrived in Las Herrerias after following the Dragonte route so feeling very tired I asked in the albergue about the horses which are mentioned in Brierley. They phoned him and he came round and arranged everything. He organised my very light bag to go in a van to an albergue which he...
