    Take both. A hat doesn’t weigh much or cost much (unless it’s a Panama). Then you can dump whichever is more cumbersome.

    Assuming we’re not into panto season - The OP’s got an umbrella and therefore doesn’t ‘need’ a hat. Might be advised to have a hat. Might be utterly reckless to not have a hat. But he doesn’t ‘need’ a hat. I would have a hat

    I don't think so. You can use elastic shock cord, Velcro, etc. to create your own system to hold your umbrella in place. Clips like this can also be used to hold an umbrella.

    I use a handsfree umbrella. I don't like wearing hats because they make me hotter. The umbrella provides shade for my head, face, and upper body.
