It's exactly what I did when I was traveling. I missed many a 'famous site', but found places and met people that I would never otherwise have come across. Serendipity indeed.

Wearing the poncho on top of the other waterproof jacket maybe what did you in. My son (who spent some years as an infanteer) corrected me on this. The condensation under the poncho builds up fast which is why it’s best to wear something light...
