Brisbane to SJPP

Hi all, i am new to this forum and looking at travelling from Brisbane to Paris to SJPP i guess late Feb 2015 to walk the Camino de Santiago in 30 days.

What i would like to know is where is best place to fly to? CGD? then a train to SJPP?

After that, from Santiago, what is best way back to Paris then to fly back to Brisbane?

Brisbane to Paris ... Stay overnight... Train from Paris montparnasse train station about 10.40 am get to Bayonne about 3.40pm ... Stay overnight and get train to st jean next morning ... This plan will allow you time to get over jet lag before starting camino

Getting to Sjpp can be just as expensive from CdG or London (heatrow/stansted).
I would first check what is cheaper, easier and shorter traveltime to fly to from Brisbane (london or paris) and then check what is cheapest and easiest from either London or Paris.

From London you fly to Biarritz and then train to bayonne and Sjpp or get a shared taxi from biarritz airport straight to Sjpp (can sometimes be as cheap as €16, depending on how many people share the ride)
From CdG you take a train/metro to paris, from there a train to bayonne and then Sjpp or you fly from CdG to Biarritz airport and then train or taxi again as mentioned above.

Planes from london or CdG can be as cheap as €29 if you book with one of the budget airlines.
The same aprox price goes for the train from paris.

2104 Charles de Gaulle Airport to Orly Airport

There are two transit options from CDG Airport to Orly Airport.

a. RER Line B (destination B4 Saint Remy les Chevreuse) from CDG airport to Station Antony. Take Orly Val (name of train) from Station Antony to Orly airport Terminal Sud and Terminal Ouest. Allow 1:30 hours.

b. Air France bus from CDG airport direct to Paris Orly airport. Allow 1:15 hours.

2105 CDG Airport to Gare d'Austerlitz

RER Line B (destination B4 Saint Remy les Chevreuse) from CDG airport to Saint Michel Notre Dame RER station. Walk from RER station to Metro. Take Metro line 10 from Cluny la Sorbonne to Gare Austerlitz. Allow 1 hour.

2106 CDG Airport to TGV Massy

RER Line B (destination B4 Saint Remy les Chevreuse) from CDG airport to Massy-Palaiseau RER station. The Massy TGV station is located next to the RER station.

2107 CDG Airport to Gare Montparnasse

There are two transit options from CDG airport to Gare Montparnasse:

a. RER Line B (destination B2 Robinson or B4 Saint Remy les Chevreuse) from CDG airport to Gare du Nord. Paris Metro Line 4 from Gare du Nord to Metro Station Montparnasse Bienvenue. Allow 1:00 hour. Allow an additional 15 minutes to walk from the Metro station to Gare Montparnasse.

~Note there are 3 points where it is possible to transfer from RER B to Metro line 4. A transfer at St Michel may be preferable as Gare du Nord is a large station and will require orientation time.

b. Air France operates a bus service from CDG direct to Gare Montparnasse. Allow 1:15 hours.

There are at least two viable options for getting from Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) airport to Saint Jean Pied de Port (SJPdP):

a. Fly from Paris to Biarritz and take the train from Bayonne to SJPdP.

b. Take the train from Paris to Bayonne and transfer to another train from Bayonne to SJPdP. Stations in Paris with trains to Bayonne include: CDG 2, Gare d'Austerlitz, Gare Montparnasse, and Gare Massy.

Note: The tracks between Bayonne and SJPdP got washed out in Spring 2014. At time of edit (July 2014) the train goes from Bayonne to Cambo les Bains. Passengers to SJPdP transfer to an SNCF operated bus at Cambo les Bains. There is no information as to when the tracks will be repaired. The schedule is changing often.

2153 ~Option 1 Fly from Paris to Biarritz and train to SJPdP

a. Fly from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) to Biarritz Airport (BIQ). Easy Jet provides service; or,

b. Fly from Paris Orly Airport (ORY) to Biarritz Airport (BIQ) Air France provides service.

The Chronoplus urban bus #14 leaves from the doors of Biarritz Airport and goes to Gare de Bayonne. Allow 40 minutes.

The SNCF TER train #62 travels from Bayonne to terminus at SJPdP.

2154 ~Option 2 - Train from Paris to SJPdP

TGV trains travel towards Bayonne from three train stations in Paris:

a. There is a TGV station located at Charles de Gaulle Airport Terminal 2.

b. There is a TGV station located at Gare Montparnasse in central Paris. There is greater frequency of service from Gare Montparnasse than from CDG 2.

c. The tracks from CDG 2 and Gare Montparnasse converge and TGV trains from both stations stop at Gare Massy.

SNCF TGV trains leave from Paris enroute to Bordeaux or Irun. Often there is a transfer required at Bordeaux. TGV trains from Bordeaux terminate in Irun. TER trains from Bordeaux terminate in Pau or Hendaye. If your train is bound for Pau another transfer is required at Dax. Trains bound for Hendaye or Irun stop in Bayonne.

SNCF Intercites night trains travel from Paris Gare d'Austerlitz to Hendaye and stop in Bayonne.

SNCF TER train #62 travels from Gare Bayonne to terminus at SJPdP.

You will get limited results if you try to find a schedule for a train from Paris to SJPdP. I'd suggest planning your trip from Paris to Bayonne then Bayonne to SJPdP.

If I were traveling to SJPdP by way of Paris I would:

a. Determine if it was cost effective and time effective to fly from Paris to Biarritz. Time effective means arriving in time to catch a train from Bayonne to SJPdP on the same day.

b. If arriving at CDG and taking the train is the better option ... take the train from CDG 2 if the schedule is viable.

c. If CDG 2 schedule doesn't work ... Take the RER train from CDG to Massy and catch the TGV train originating from Montparnasse ... Massy is easier to access than Montparnasse because there are no transit transfers required.

d. If arriving at Orly ... take the Orly Val to station Antony and RER train to Massy. Trains from CDG2 and Montparnasse converge before Massy.

BrisbaneGee, 30 days from SJPDP to SDC is a stretch depending on your fitness/age/hiking experience. Have you considered instead flying to Madrid (Emirates/Qantas) and walking from Pamplona? That shaves a few days of walking and travel.

I agree with Kanga. In April this year we flew to Paris then train to SJPP before starting our walk.. If I did it again I would fly into Madrid or Barcelona. Also 30 days SJPP TO SDC in thirty days is putting a lot of pressure on yourself and could potentially lead to injury by pushing yourself to a schedule instead of walking to your body's rhythm. You won't have time to give yourself short days or rest days if you want to look around a bit or give your body a break before it breaks.

Helen and all, appreciate your feedback (wow a lot to read through) but thats what i needed. We are relatively fit and have thought more since initial post and from what i have read, 32 days works out better. Have booked flights to Paris CDG. Will stay a couple of days and train looks the most economical for us and will stay overnight in Bayonne. Can not wait and will ask you all lots more questions. G

In bad conditions ie heavy rain, dense fog, sleet and, of course, snow I walk on verges of near-by smaller roads whenever possible. For example the N 135 along the Valcarlos alternate to Roncesvalles and down to Zubiri.

I have watched this thread unrole for a few days. So here is my penny's worth of thoughts after reading some of the advice you have received from the the best in world.....

Doing the entire Camino from SJPdP to SDC in 30 days is possible but you will miss lots of the beauty of it in your haste and early morning starts. It is not meant to be a race. (A friend of mine said to me someone has already completed the Camino this year before you so what's the rush?)

I live in the Pays Basque and starting from St. Jean Pied de Port in February, March, April or May is fraught with weather issues. Meaning like winter conditions you have never seen in Queensland. I spend the winter in in Florida to avoid the snow, sleet and near freezing conditions here.
Flying to and from Madrid is great advice and staring in Pamplona is even better advice if you plan to walk the Camino in 30 days. Buen Camino

Well welcome to you new home. Brisbane to SJPP - well its a long way to walk so airlines: Emirates (Qantas to Singapore initially) or Singapore Airlines probably have most direct flights. Other airlines maybe cheaper but take upwards of 30 hours to Paris and have limited flights.
Others have covered the Paris to St Jean segment, but yes have to stress getting over the mountains even in late April can be a problem. Kanga made good point about your walking schedule - 800 km in 30 days = 25/28 km every single day. Not sure when/if you have been to Spain before but there is a lot of history here - even just on the Camino. So "stop and smell the roses" - unless time away is critical try to get 7 weeks away and even that has problems. From Oz its roughly two days from home to SJPP - and starting immediately on arrival doesn't allow for any rest to get over the jet lag. Starting off for Roncesvalles (25km) after 30 plus hours of travelling not recommended. Have another look at this above. Come back with more questions - people here have done the Camino upwards to 5-7-10 times. Goodluck
