As @jungleboy has previously mentioned in his Spirit of the Camino blog, Mertola is a beautiful and important city in Portugal's Islamic past. This article in AramcoWorld magazine does an excellent job in illustrating Mertola's Moorish history and the work being done to reveal and preserve that history.
