I ordered another Outdoor Research Echo Hoodie (different color). A super lightweight and thin layer that I wear in different situations. Highly recommend.

Also a pair of KUHL pants. I like them and they are on sale.

Right now I’ve got a Patagonia Capilene Cool Daily long sleeve shirt (based on a recommendation here) and a pair of co-op ribbed shorts (which I wear under a hiking skirt) in my cart. I also like Kuhl pants but don’t really need another pair at the moment.

My training walk yesterday was from my apartment to REI. 13 mile walk that ended with standing on line for 30 minutes. I bought a packtowl. Just finished reading bad reviews of it. Eh, it's a towel. Also picked up a couple of pairs of Wright socks.

Zulu 30 arrives Tuesday. While the coupon says it can be used on one eligible full-price item, it seems that may be one item per purchase transaction. So far has not objected to me using the coupon code a second time.

And lots of things are discounted even below the coupon percent if you're in the mood.

I was sooooo tempted to get another pair of wonderful Merrell Moab boots but I resisted (I already have three pairs).

I have both a rainskirt if I’m wearing pants or shorts (and for skiing in the rain), as well as a Macabi hiking skirt.

I’ve added to my cart a small dry bag for kayaking and a not-for-Camino short rain jacket for everyday wear.

REI prices are so ridiculously high that I can’t imagine how they even stay in business. The coupons are worthless.

I'm old enough to remember how REI started with famous mountaineer Jim Whittaker as CEO. The idea was to provide a source of quality climbing gear, and that was all they carried. Living in Bolivia in the 80s and climbing in the Andes I got almost everything from their catalog -- ropes, ice axes and other technical tools, descending devices, crampons and technical (which is to say completely inflexible) climbing boots. After Whittaker left I guess they decided that catering to the boutique crowd was more profitable. I still drop in to look from time to time, but can't help reflecting sadly on the old days.

Your post saved me a bunch of money! I was waffling on getting some Keen sandals I like for albergues, strolling around town, etc., but had already used my full-priced discount coupon code. I tried it on a separate order and it worked! Saved me about $15. Thank you!

I think it would be more unusual to post if REI wasn’t having a sale! As a 45 year member, times have changed. When Sally Jewell left to become US Secy of Interior for Obama, the new CEO fired a lot of longtime managers who were focused on the client experience. ( A couple of the managers are friends of mine in Seattle.) Now the focus is mostly on name brand items and revenue generation although they really do encourage their employees to get outside and use the gear they are selling.
If you like Outdoor Research gear, and I’m wearing some of it as I type this, they are also a Seattle company and OR has both a website and an outlet store in the Seattle area. REI also has an outlet store and a gently used items department at the Seattle downtown store. Good shopping!!

I bought these REI rain pants, and just finished the Portuguese Coastal. They were indispensable! Great in rain, but also used them just when it was windy and cooler. Me, too. I managed a local backpacking/climbing store some years ago, and there were two other locally run backpacking/mountaineering/climbing/kayaking stores in town, too. We were all friends and each store kind of had its own specialty. All of us working in the local stores were active outdoors and knowledgeable about the products we carried. Our markups from wholesale weren't bad and we could place special orders for customers if we didn't carry a product. REI came in and all the local stores went out of business.. Boutique store is right. They carry at least 7 kinds of thong underwear for women but it's hard to find pants or shorts with two adequate pockets. (I order my shorts and pants with good pockets from duluthtrading.com). I'd rather shop locally, and there are some good products at REI that I do buy. But their prices are high, many of their clothing items - especially for women - are fashion-oriented (not outdoors practical), most of the staff is not knowledgeable about the gear and there are some glaring gaps in certain practical products for active, outdoor people.
