My wife and I stayed in Burgette at a nice Pension (Pedroarena Rural House). We broke up the Napolean route into two stages using the Mountain Shuttle, so the extra 3 Kms were no problem.

Acquaintances of mine who have indulged while in Portugal have suffered no obvious ill effects. For the more risk averse I recommend Ginjinha but do be careful not to swallow the pips
Left Saint Jean this morning at 7am. Got to Roncesvalles just before 1:30. Weather was clear and beautiful!
I didn't pre book, and was able to get a bed. I did hear they were all full by 4pm though.
