First follow up I have is would you have any recommendations for where to stay in Pobena ( if you stayed there). Currently haven't found anywhere and is one of my planned stops. Follow up question, did you book ahead or just took your chances on places to stay wherever you stopped? I have read a few things about challenges of finding accommodation, though my start is mid September so may be quiet by then?

On that day I usually end up staying at el haya, it's a little past Pobena. Specifically at the truck stop/ biker/ travel motel. Although it has very little "camino character", I've always rather enjoyed it. I typically book 2 or 3 days in advance in general, although be aware of holidays and festivals when things can get tricky...

I stayed in Portugalete and walked through Probena to Castro. Long day but there was just one place to stay in Pobena and it seemed a bit so so.

As well as La Haya, there is Hotel Muskiz, a small hotel about 100 metres before it, on the northern side of the A-634 where I think I stayed about 12 years ago. IIRC there was no restaurant, so you would need to schlep a bith further to La Haya for dinner, or there is a restaurant (Saavedra) 350 metres before the Muskiz. The A-634 is a well-used secondary road, so one should try to be alert for traffic after sunset.

No one has mentioned the Albergue in Pobena, where we stayed in 2014. Is it closed?
