Sandwich - yes it is a place - has an issue with imagination when it comes to place names.
I used to call Devon my second home, they are quite inventive when it comes to place names ... "Black Dog", "Half Moon Village", ... 😉

Try Gloucestershire: Lower Slaughter comes to mind. But this thread is already 11 pages long. Let's not send it into oblivion.

I'm traveling, and life is full.

But the other day the stars aligned, and I went with some friends to Maungatautiri. It's safe from introduced predators, and wonderful beyond words. We were out all day but what we did wasn't really a walk - it was too slow for that. Appreciating nature in all its forms, and reconnecting with both human friends and bush friends.

Yesterday Peg and I had a meetup with the Boston Chapter of the American Pilgrims on the Camino and friends and family for a walk around Walden Pond (yeah, that Walden). The walk was too short but we congregated after and names were taken for walking partners for doing parts of the Bay Circuit Trail around Boston. It was a gorgeous autumn day with many beautiful trees shining colorfully on our way to and from but disappointingly the trees around the pond were still green. I didn't take any pictures because of that and also I didn't want to interrupt the conversation.

A good morning walk - air still a bit smoky from nearby wildfires. A visit with a Barn Owl that I first saw about a month ago. I haven't been able to visit her for a couple of weeks - I was happy to find her roosting on the same branch in a magnificent chestnut tree. Someone had placed a row of chestnuts along a lower branch. The owl slept most of the time I was with her but woke a couple of times for a good scratch.

Today was overcast so that helps with pictures taken in the woods, no areas of high contrast. It mutes the color of the trees though. It's a lot prettier immersed among the trees than looking at a small 2D picture. Here's today's walk.

And yesterday I took a walk from the couch to the living room window.

At the end of yesterday's walk I was ready to take a picture of the pond but I remembered submitting two pictures of it previously. Those two were taken two weeks apart and just happened to be a few pixels off from each other. So I shifted my position some to try to recreate those earlier pictures. I needed to shift right a bit.

A walk on Westham Island and through the Alaksen National Wildlife area. A beautiful morning for a few hours before the clouds rolled in. The Snow Geese have arrived on their way south from Wrangel Island, stopping here to rest for a bit before continuing farther south for the winter.

Yesterday's walk was done under an overcast sky so the foliage was somewhat muted. The colorful foliage can't last much longer so here's some pictures now consisting of the road, some trees that caught my eye, some views of the pond and two at the cornfield. The one with Peg was taken just as she finished walking over a patch of yellow leaves where she said "Its like walking in sunshine."

It is unseasonally warm in Belgium.
In the last few days, I've walked various places.
A highlight was an almost 9km counter-clockwise loop from Hastiere-sur-Meuse and back again, beginning and ending at the 11th C Eglise Notre Dame. The parts of the walk along the river are on the Via Monastica, which I'd walked in April. At the time we wondered if a shortcut across the hill would be a good thing to do, and fortunately we decided not to - the other day we discovered that the descent to the river on the Givet side would have been awful - a steep mudslide. Going up without a pack was fine, but definitely hard work.

Enjoy walking in sunshine, soon it will disappear for a couple of months until end of January.

Today's walk was in sunshine but only partially because most of the walk was in the woods. This was the walk that we call The Hill. We had a tiny bit of trouble going up the hill this time; the oak leaves hid the recently fallen acorns and we would sometimes step on them and roll downhill a bit. Well, officially it is the Acorn Trail.

Yesterday, I took my 92 year-old dad to my favorite jetty in Marina Del Rey at his request.

I have come here for decades.

It’s my quiet place.

Beautiful weather here at the moment
Unseasonably warm too
A walk in Epping forest with the four grandsons and there’s a queue at the tree to be climbed
A carpet of leaves the whole way and of course the the little brook/river has to be jumped
not too much mud stuck though and we headed to The Last Post pub for lunchC303324C-24A8-4ECF-8F8D-38C0E1E0BB6B.jpeg6985B538-A8FD-4131-8C71-FAE1627C70EB.jpegCF88F94F-CAEB-48A2-B27C-382080406045.jpegF0C06D7D-7FC2-4C59-BA3C-C9A3D26D1A02.jpegB73598E4-B4FA-4D46-B2F0-4A8F38964635.jpegB9D8EA41-6C57-4FA2-9BC0-41658E041739.jpegD1E6362F-739D-494C-8659-3E1935C60F5E.jpeg65F9C92E-0CE1-4DCB-B06F-937174FBF0A9.jpeg6053303D-8149-4B97-86ED-D9FF2482FB8B.jpeg

After having lunch yesterday with friends we were going to pass by Minutemen National Historical Park so we decided to stop and walk part of Battle Road, a five mile section of the sixteen mile running battle between colonial militias and the King's troops that started America's War of Independence. Absolutely perfect weather, especially for November and there was plenty of color to be seen on the trees still yet dried oak leaves on the road to kick our way through. We weren't the only kids at heart doing that.

British members may have noticed that the flags marking graves of fallen soldiers are the King's Colors Colours the national flag as it was in 1775.

In my last post here I mentioned that we were walking and kicking leaves at the same time. That was on a well maintained dirt road. The last few days on our trail walks through more familiar areas we were doing this too but with Peg in particular hitting the hidden obstacles.

I probably wouldn't have bothered to post this non-news except that I read of a rescue that happened this past weekend. It was surprising to me and I wanted to pass it on. This was in the mountains that we do a lot of our summer camping. To prevent further injury to the resuced hiker during transport to the trailhead and to avoid it themselves the rescue team used leaf blowers on over a mile of trail (so maybe 2 km) so they could see rocks and such that may have caused sliding or tripping.

Leaves can be treacherous. During my years in South West England it happened to me twice, that I wrecked one of my car's tyres on narrow Dartmoor roads by driving right over a sharp piece of rock lying hidden under some leaves. 🙈

Indeed. Sharp objects of the venomous type too. Although the first photo is a stock photo, the copperheads here are hard to spot along trails when they are out on warm Fall days. The second photo was on the Beltline Trail in August; no leaves but a jogger ran right up to it before I pointed it out. Imaginie if it were leafy.

Last weekend of October I drove to the Wartburg and had a lovely walk (10.5km) around and inside. After the visit I walked down through the dragon's canyon to town to take a good thuringian dinner. Very yummy!
Imagine that: last time I visited the Wartburg before, there were more Soviet Soldiers strolling throughout the Castle than private tourists o_O

I know I am stretching this is a bit...😄
Not a walk but a fourty k.round trip on bike to the oldest town in Belgium. Meeting with prince of the Eburones , Ambiorix in Tongeren.
A decadent Chouffecoffee as a treat in case the electric heating on the terrace would not be sufficient.
In the background part of the Basilica, under restoration.

Oh, I remember that place fondly. The first time I was there was together with a Japanese friend who was so happy as it is a real castle :-) Later on I lived not too far from the Wartburg, in Jena. A nice area for walks!

Salt pans and an amazing volcanic coastline
Towards El Golfo and the green lake which some reports say the colour is due to algae at the bottom of the lake …caused by a volcanic explosion
Another report says that the colour is due to a semi precious stone in the sand
We we’re not temped to jump in despite the heat

Winter is coming. Well, it's come already for our artic friends, probably has arrived for some others and for others yet it's going to take another six months or so. But here a walk a couple of days ago showed us a frozen cove at a pond and by midnight the grass at home was covered in snow. It was washed away by rain by the morning. That's good because I still have potted plants that have to be planted.

We had -20°C / -4F today ... and for those others who still have to wait for winter another 6 months ... we will still have snow then ❄️❄️

Beauty of nature (physics): Had a short walk on the ice today. When humid air cools down extremely and rapidly, it just needs some tiny seeds for crystallisation. So these millions and millions of ice roses of impressive size did grow on the ice more or less over night – some actually hand-sized (including fingers) but rather fragile.
This phenomenon is rare even north of the Arctic Circle, at least at this order of magnitude and multitude. But right now we see this on every of the many lakes in the area.
The ice thickness on this particular lake is around 15 cm (6 in) now, but it will grow. Until midwinter it might reach maybe 70 cm (30 in) ... I guess soon the first ice road might open. Even on the open sea.

Well we found it at last
The secret garden in Lanzarote
Had the wrong barranco the last time
Walked on cliff path and down the barranco las casitas
A beautiful oasis under a hanging cliff
An amazing place and started by Juan Maria and Natalie in the late 80s in between fishing expeditions
Their dog Kevin used to guard the place until his death
Plants, cacti, trees and beautifully placed stones surround the grotto where there are hundreds of small toys and mementos

We are just home from a few days in N Devon, our first 'non-family' trip this year. Not much walking due to the weather but a few photos around the village and we walked the road up the hill.
The old mill has a 'knock-down' to its old kitchen (an old style fire break) and retained as a link still. Some of the houses have their old fireside cloam/bread ovens which show outside as a bulge in the chimney. The river was rising and the trees just changing colour.

A walk on the Shoreline Trail at Port Moody which is part of the The Great Trail / Trans Canada Trail. I enjoy walking the boardwalks over the mud flats. Along the way, the last of the spawning salmon, some lovely terra cotta panels on the bridges showing the flora and fauna of the area and a Bald Eagle feeding on salmon who flew into a tree as we neared.

Little stone enclosures, each protecting a vine and thousands of them as far as the eye can see
From Mt Tinasoria the enclosures look like little half rings

Oh yes, I posted the “green” lake walk a few days ago
A lovely village, we stayed there when backpacking around the island about 15 years ago
It really is a beautiful and scenic island and very easy to get around on buses.

Oh, I went over that one too quickly, probably as it looked differently because of different light than when I visited it :)

A few days of walking and we finished the GR131 at Orzola in the north of the island
a lovely walk via monte Corona

Things are seriously golden right now. This morning passing a field with sheep, guarded by several very big dogs.
Rent-a-goats have become the bushhog del dia around here, and they are always accompanied by a couple of these vicious looking hounds. But the hounds love to take offerings from the walkers and gawkers and are just there to keep the goats from migrating into manicured and expensively-vegetated yards.

Oh, that is sad, maybe just wait and try again later ... it seems to work for me. But I am at our cabin right now, which, ironically, has a much much better internet connection than our regular house 😆
I got the sound on both videos
The wonderful crashing river and the crackling fire which nearly lulled me to sleep…beautiful sounds.
thank you

Before Thanksgiving dinner Peg and I took a short walk though part of her old hometown. Heading down to Lake Ontario we came upon this boat slip. There must have been an incident with a banana peel on a fiberglass boat deck (I once had an incident with a blackened peel hiding between two cars on an asphalt parking lot. I did manage to stay upright, the only fun thing about it).

A ship registered in Brazil was in port picking up wheat and soybeans.
PXL_20221124_162441086.jpg
It seems to take the town fathers some time to get things done. They finally got around to authorizing the port 156 years after it was created.
PXL_20221124_163025649.jpg
We also stopped at the Civil War monument in a local park (a low sun would have caused a terrible photo). The town fathers acted a bit faster to get that up, about 65 years after the war. I wonder if any veterans were there.

A new year. Looking forward seeing your gorgeous pictures from all over the world.

Thumbnails and resizing the pictures is always nice as not to overload the system here.
A post-Thanksgiving walk here in Boynton Beach, Florida 🌴

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
I still have my very local, almost private Camino-esque route I take on days off, when I need a half day´s Camino distance which always ends at the Vivaldi Café, after having touched the bronze scallop at the local church that is on the E6 route going through Scandinavia al the way through Europe.
It is not the real thing but it smells and tastes the same. The Café knows me as " The Cortado Guy" upon my insistence on that very beverage...
Last time I was surprised, however, to spot, at the beginning of the route this sorry lost sole (!) from a boot:
It is bad to lose direction, to lose faith, belief in civilisation as we know it,
- but to lose traction is a very tangible loss...

A nice Fall walk along the Chattahoochee today. A fast-moving front went through overnight, dropped 2.5 inches of rain and cleared the air, as well as cooling us down almost 20 degrees (OK, it’s still 50F, but it’s the South). The deer were out & about, including one that wanted to play cat & mouse crossing the trail. The cormorants, like the Canadian geese, are ubiquitous and the Fish & Wildlife Service is studying how to mitigate their impact on the fish population (but the cormorants leave in March, many of the geese don’t).

I got out for a walk this morning in Northern Illinois before the potential 8" of snow started. The lovely French Horn trill of sandhill cranes heralded their advance in the misty sky.

A beautiful moody freezing cold morning walk at the bird sanctuary. Thank goodness for a warming hut along the way. Watching ducks landing (skating) on the frozen ponds. Met a Great Blue Heron on the path who kept pace with me, waiting (I like to think : ) and then flying ahead each time I approached.

Across the road from my house is a pine forest... a pine plantation, actually. I like to end most of my daily walks with a detour through the trails among the trees. The machines have been busy clearing these paths. Obviously, a harvest is planned. The smell of the fresh-turned earth conjures memories of childhood and tilling the fields for planting.
While the idea of these trees being taken down makes me sad, I tell myself that this IS a plantation and this is what these trees were planted for. Walking beneath their branches today, I wondered if they knew their fate? Do they, somehow, feel a sense of pride in a destiny fulfilled?
Quien sabe?
When they're gone, I'll be sad. So, while they are here, I'll walk among them, enjoying the smell of them. I'll watch the butterflies fluttering here and there and enjoy the sounds of the birds... the lashing echo of the Whip Bird, made more beautiful by the knowledge that it takes two birds, working together, to make this distinct call. Or, the melody of the Magpie, the laugh of the Kookaburra- reminding me to not take myself too seriously. Even the sarcastic call of the crow that never seems to think much of my efforts.
My walks are always filled with gifts...it's only up to me to recognize them.

Absolutely. Beautiful post, @Duckadang.

Rotterdam. I had a different kind of walk, through the glorious municipal library. Culminating with an opportunity to view a few things from their invaluable Erasmus collection, including a letter from Erasmus to Luther, basically saying "I agree but, gee, tone it down a few notches, will you?" And a emoji-like doodle in the margin of a book Erasmus had owned. There is a historian of books who is there to bring the books out of the vault and show them to you.

Are the old archived books available to the public on demand or do you have to reserve/qualify/etc.? What a great resource.

I'm not sure. Three of us got a 45 min viewing of a selection of treasures, and the person who offerred it said they do that once a month. But I couldn't find it on the website. If you're an Erasmus scholar, I would guess there is access.

A wet and puddle-wonderful (apologies e.e.) 5-mile walk along the Chattahoochee where feathers and web feet were de rigueur today. Then there was a poor soul in a carapace who was probably flooded out of its burrow from the recent heavy rains, and an old fool in an Altus with no excuse except a love of Galician weather.

Out of curiosity : do you wear regular walking shoes/ boots for these kind of walks or Wellingtons?

I wear Brooks Dyad runners; I’ve found they are the best fit. They and my feet get soaked but dry out overnight, and it's not cold here. For cold or rough, hilly walks, I wear boots. I wore the runners for a two week camino, Burgos to Rabanal, last March in similar weather and didn’t get blisters. I find runners are easier on my legs and I can do more miles in a day.

P.S. With runners, I take an extra pair of marino wool socks (three on Camino) to always have a clean dry pair. With boots, just two.
