Take away the windmill and it could almost be pictures from my neck of the woods in northern Illinois. The big difference is in the charming villages you have in Belgium, that we do not really have here.

Charm is not only to be found in the villages Chris but also in the people that live there. And of that I'm pretty sure you all have more than enough.

A walk from Eastbourne to Birling gap and back, about 19 km
A sunny but cold day....no rain so we didn't need the lovely bus shelter on the way!
Windswept trees and beautiful scenery, this walk is part of the South Downs Way.
We passed a plaque to commemorate those who fought in 39-45 war

Beachy head is the highest point and is the third most popular point in the world to commit suicide......after the Golden Gate Bridge in America and the Aokigahara woods in Japan.
The Beachy head chaplaincy team conducts regular day and evening patrols of the area in attempts to locate and stop potential jumpers
Those who work in the pub and taxi drivers also look out for those contemplating suicide.

Passing Belle Tout lighthouse we caught our first view of the 7 sisters

In 1999, due to erosion, this lighthouse was raised from its foundations and moved back 55 ft from the edge by hydraulic jacks.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Oh my @Koidream : that is literally around the corner!
Hope you enjoyed it?
Btw did you photoshop out the crowd in the picture of the church ...Or were you lucky and no other people?
Next time do stop for a social distance proof coffee....

Not much walking today a stroll along the beach from Lyme Regis to Charmouth looking for fossils
Your comment reminded me of a fascinating interview I heard with a famous Thames “mudlarker.” I guess you don’t need a permit to look for fossils!

Were we that close to a good cup of distance proof coffee? Next time maybe...
No photoshop in my pics, just waited long enough for the crowd to get aside. Yelling... "snake", sometimes helps 😇
Look inside "your" Doorkijkkerk" and you can see there are two that didn't want to move, not even after "Snake inside the church" 😂
Love Loon and it's fields, walking routes and so much more. We have been there a million times (can be a few less, but not much).

Hehe have to remember the " snake " part.
Yes you were very close. Especially in one of your pictures you could smell the coffee.
Next time feel free to pm me.

Walking the Mountains to the Murray Rail Trail, in Australia's high country (not an oxymoron!) last week. Alpacas do well here, a very large tree, billabong, peppers at Brown Bros Winery, walking through bush bush, water, high country, vineyard, autumn colour.

As we're in the mid-point of the cherry blossom season in NJ, I'm reminded of Matsuo Basho's haiku which makes my daily walks in my neighborhood and local parks enchanting & contemplative:

How many, many things
They call to mind
These cherry-blossoms!

(Samazama no/koto omoidasu/sakura kana)

The cherry blossoms also inspired me to write this piece.

SC,
Thank you for sharing your essay; may we all find comfort. ..When I was a very, very young my grandmother greatly enjoyed taking me to see cherry blossoms in Branch Brook Park.

mspath,
What a small world! I don't from live far from Branch Brook Park, and make it a ritual to see the cherry blossoms every year. Actually we plan on visitng it today to the see the late-blooming Kwanzans which are in their full glories now. Many thanks. Best

And where did the pimientos de padrón come from???? Did you eat the red one?
Brown Brothers vineyard restaurant garden. I don’t recall the red one being particularly hot. They have a wonderful herb and vegetable garden and a talented chef, very innovative.

At last! A chance to walk along a familiar path, but forbidden for over a year. I thoroughly enjoyed walking along, just under 15km. I was able to punctuate at strategic spots with loos in two shopping centres. I passed along a promenade beside a popular year round swimming spot. It was packed, as usual. The air temperature today was about 10. There is a new fashion attached to this sport: post swim, wear your coat that is called a dryrobe. They look very cosy! My last stop was to share a little time with a former neighbour, and we both sat on the path to her door at the required distance and enjoyed an ice-cream I had bought to take round. I disturbed her at gardening. She is 92, and she is admitting to feeling her age a little bit...

Another long bike ride. I am getting frustrated because I have a goal in my mind, and every time I go out, at the end of the ride I realize I will be about 10 km short and I just can’t go on!

This ride to the west was super, though I am still anxiously awaiting a time to ride north! First signs of spring in both the natural world (bluebells and redbuds) and human world (first tractor plowing up a field for planting)

My one challenge was arriving at a road closed sign and realizing there was no way I was going to take the nearly 4 mile detour to get to the other side, so I became a scofflaw and hurried across.

An undulating walk from the hamlet of Southease to the 7 sisters bus stop..20km.
a bright sunny day With a biting wind coming from the North and swirling around towards us.
A lovely little church dating from 966AD.
2 picturesque thatched houses
the Southease youth hostel just before the climb onto the Downs was closed due to COVID as was the cafe there
generally a very scenic walk before we reached the village of Alfriston hidden in the valley below
cafes, pubs, all closed so on we went over the fields between two rivers
A forest near the end with a few sets of stairs which nearly did me in!!
The meandering river before us as we reached the bus stop.image.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webp

Alfriston is beautiful

A lovely little church dating from 966AD.
Wow, are churches in England routinely left open unattended or was there someone there?

2 picturesque thatched houses
I remember when I took my parents to Ireland for their 50th wedding anniversary, we were told that thatched houses had become extinct (or almost so) in no small part because of fire insurance prices. I imagine this is the same in your neck of the woods?

Alfriston is beautiful
So, Annette take this as my request for some Alfriston photos the next time you are there!

Alfriston is beautiful
Yes it is a lovely little place
when we walked the South Downs Way from Winchester we stayed there for a night.

this time however Covid has changed the place so much
everything was closed, not a soul in sight
after the long walk, I was never so glad to see that church spire and the houses and was so looking forward to a coffee in a quirky little cafe or pub...
sadly, it was not to be...
next time perhaps!
Not perhaps.....but definitely!

Hi Laurie
quite a few of the churches that we’ve visited have been open
I did take a picture of the lovely stained glass window
will add it on here

where did you visit when you went to Ireland?

apparantly right now there are approx 1,500 thatched cottages in Ireland.....had to look this one up!!
in the UK there are approximately 60,000 thatched cottages
insuring them is fairly expensive due to the rebuilding costs in case of fire and the specific materials used by specialists
A friend of ours used to have a thatched cottage and part of it had to be replaced every 10-15 years
I only took a picture of the church as we left the village but got some of the village from Google
we did sit on the benches shown in the middle of the village and chat to some other walkersimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.pngimage.pngimage.pngimage.pngimage.png

I have just finished reading a rather lovely story by the japanese writer, Durian Sukegawa in which cherry blossoms and the passing seasons feature. Your photos add to this pleasure. Perhaps you know the book? : あん An . I read it in French: 'Les Délices de Tokyo'. There is an english translation, also.

A paltry 7.4km today. Feels like nothing after double the distance yesterday. I must try now to enlist my mental muscle power to keep moving, in readiness... no, not in readiness. Just because it is good for my health!
A late enough start (08.42), but still in time to beat the crowd. Perfect walking weather.
Many bridges in Dublin are named after men who feature somehow in local or national history. I had never seen this plaque before, as I usually do not cross the river at this point. Let me just say he dreamed of an Ireland separate from the UK. No further comment as it could become political.
The second photo is to assure those who have dreams of a different kind - tasting Guinness near to the source - it is still working away, waiting for you. You can have mine, it is not to my taste!

Bridge of Donovan Ross
This bridge was renamed in 1922 in memory of the remains of Donnabháin Rosa 1831-1915
"The pure eyes of this man were seen, and he alone was small in his age, the vision of Ireland as I really want it to be; Ireland is free and still Irish; An Irish Ireland without pressure for freedom ".
Patrick Pearse 1915
Built by the Graves Association of Gaelic Heroes 2015

I hope this is correct and understandable...

Finally, I have WiFi and some time. I wouldn't normally say this was a local walk but it is in the same country.

Peg and I were in a campground that South Carolina's Palmetto Trail runs through so we had the call. The out and back was about 9 miles (14 km) the longest walk for Peg in a long time. The first half out was through forest and the second half was with the forest on one side and marsh and creek on the other. At the turnaround point for us there was a sign that should have been posted instead at the campground because that was the true start point of the trail. I later walked our start point in the reverse direction, it was mostly a boardwalk over a swamp, and about 300 meters later came upon the true start point, the board walk surrounded palmetto number one.

We also recently spent an afternoon walking around the gardens of Magnolia Plantation near Charleston, South Carolina. This wasn't the best time to visit; the azaleas were mostly gone and the camelias and magnolias were hardly starting to bloom. But I like irises so I wasn't disappointed. Note the great blue heron in the last photo. It chased away an egret to get that spot.

A short walk of 8km
Got the bus to the 7sisters bus stop
The meandering river was in full flow in the sunshine
It was up to see sister number 7 ....as apparently sister number one is visited at the Birling Gap
The coastguard cottages were visible on the other side of the river

7 tough cookies are these girls but they were nice to me on this visit and didn't seem as hard as on previous visits!
Just befor the gap we headed off to the village of East Dene on a ridge where we caught the bus back to Eastbourne
Then a wander around the promenade to see the pier and the flowersimage.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webp

'Sentaro has failed. He has a criminal record, drinks too much, and his dream of becoming a writer is just a distant memory. With only the blossoming of the cherry trees to mark the passing of time, he spends his days in a tiny confectionery shop selling dorayaki, a type of pancake filled with sweet bean paste. But everything is about to change... Sweet Bean Paste is a moving novel about the burden of the past and the redemptive power of friendship.'

...Already lots of daytourists underway but I was able to find some quiet roads...
They are not only day tourists. A week ago a new Geocaching trail was published here (see my trail picture, that's the geocache tour 😇), and that brings a lot of geocachers, especially the first weeks...

Aha good to know!
This weekend there was also a provincial activity from Chiro Limburg ( for the non Belgians : Chiro is a youthorganisation ). So lots of joy and laughter passing by.

Another planned/unplanned walk of about 14 km
got off at the South Downs bus stop and headed to Jervington on the variant South Downs Way, the intention being to return the same way
Across the downs and leafy lanes, we decided to keep going to see The Long Man of Wilmington
One church on the way, beautifully cared for and open
The church on the way back overgrown garden and closed
The scenery was wonderful with sheep all around and lambs gambling in the sun

Suddenly a big surprise.....A pilgrim path......the Cuckmere pilgrim path
had never heard of this one .
Apparently a new one established in 2018...
Ah well, next time!
Down to see the Long Man,we did not detour to Wilmington and see the carving from a distance, but it was impressive all the same from where we stood

The Long Man is Europes largest portrayal of the human form and carved into the hillside of Wilmington
Many theories of his origin abound
?prehistoric
?4th century
?11th-15th century
Seems it is a mystery
Back to the outskirts Eastbourne by lanes and fields and luckily caught a bus going our way.image.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webp

A new County Forest Preserve
We Illinoisans may have more units of local government than any other state in the US, but we wouldn’t have anywhere near the glorious natural space preserved if we didn’t have that separate taxing body called the County Forest Preserve! In our county, last year we voted to increase our forest preserve’s taxing levy, and we are looking forward to seeing what natural delights they have in store for us.

Beautiful place, @Camino Chrissy!

WHAT??? 44 preserve sites?! Champaign County has five! And our county is about twice the size of yours. No fair! How many of those preserves have you visited, @Camino Chrissy?
I've never thought about it before. I'll take "inventory" and get back to you later. If it's any consolation, they are not all huge. 🙂

I inspected the nice tri-fold map of our county forest preserves and I have been to 28 of them, some many many times. I also count 8 public nature parks on the map that I have frequented over the years.
We do have several rivers and flood plains which probably add to the interest of preserving land for recreational uses.

Well , did you actually cross the border?
If so ..quarantaine now... ;)
On the first collage, you can see the border pole. I walked around it 7 times, that's also half the times I crossed the border... 😂
But, since April 19th we can travel within the European Union and if we stay less than 48 hours, we can do it without any extra quarantaine, tests or paperwork...

An early bus to the seven sisters and a lovely walk along the nature reserve.
Lots of swans, geese and hungry cows when the farmer came down to feed them some grain
Passed by the coastguard cottages with a wonderful view of the sisters in all their finery.
A gate in the middle of nowhere and chatted with some bird watchers
Onto the little town of Seaford where we had coffee in the sun
Then walked back the same way, about 10 km image.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.png

2.5 hours walk to and from the chapel of Helshoven.
Take away coffee and pie seeing our bars and restos are still closed.
Lots of electric bikes on the paved roads but everyone was on their best behaviour 🙂.

I have posted from this area many times before, I love to walk here. Before Easter almost all snow was gone, but on Easter Eve it started to snow again and it was snowing a lot. And it is still very cold at nights so the snow is thawing (or is it melting?) very slowly. A few flowers are trying to peep up...

8km up the fell, down to the Gelt River, up through the woods and back down to the Duke of Cumberland across the valley, 32nd wedding anniversary lunch. Hail storm luckily only started once I'd arrived at the pub's chilly open-sided marquee. Two more weeks and we should be able to eat inside, sqd.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
I love rotating wind art creations, and think I see one in your last picture.

It’s funny this park’s track is right on other side of bungalow of my sixth grade class when I was 11. Currently, my mom and I reside in the duplex in which we lived at that time.

From then to now, we’ve both lived elsewhere in Los Angeles, and I in NYC off and on.

Life.

Walking and mudlarking on and by the River Thames, for the first time in over a year. A nice low Spring tide and sunshine.

I happened to look at your pictures - before I read what you had written - and was immediately reminded of the fascinating book I read recently by Lara Maiklen, Mudlark: In Search of London’s Past. And then I read what you had written! It is such a delight to see your pictures ... taken at low tide!! Thank you so much. 😊😊

So happy to see your beautiful dog! I am not a dog person, but something about the attitude that is transmitted in your photos tells me of a wonderful being within those bones and coverings!

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

Map: Église Saint-Etienne du Maïl to a meadow near Tessel, after which I plodded home (17 kms)

*(1)Église Saint-Etienne du Maïl
*(2)Fresco, subject unknown

In 1865 medieval frescoes were discovered by L’abbé Gerbeau in a side chapel of Église Saint-Etienne du Maïl. Further discoveries were made in 1969 by a team of archeologists. Tracings on plastic film were made of the frescoes at that time and published in an article by L. Echasseriaud (see attachment below).

Église du Maïl is derelict and not open to the public. Somehow, though, the heaven's smiled on me. After asking a friend to help and presenting myself at the Mairie in Pujols, I was granted access for an hour in the company of council members. In the attachment below is a pictorial comparison between the tracings of 1969 and the photos which I took April 28, 2021. There is also a partial translation of 'Historique', the opening section of Monsieur Echasseriaud's article (Merci beaucoup, Google translate!). I have had such fun putting it all together...

Cheers

I went for a wild camp in the woods. On my way to the designated spot I saw a sign with the yellow arrow and the shell. It made me so happy, seeing the Camino symbols and I felt like dancing and jumping around and that is not easy with a 14 kg backpack!
The other picture is the view from the opening of my tent.
A lovely two day trip!

Ha Ha, @Ekelund, I know exactly how you felt !

Day 90 on the way to Suderschmedeby [Trondheim to SdC. November 26, 2010]
"I saw a Camino shell today and for a moment stood transfixed. Then full of emotion and excitement I rushed up to the pole it was glued to and hollered. I would have hugged the post and kissed the sign and even the ground it was protruding from except I thought that anyone watching might get a shock. Instead I shouted to the sky and clomped about in my heavy boots swinging hiking sticks in a frenzied, careering delirium and wasted ten minutes taking photos. 90 days and suddenly there it was, a stylised shell, yellow on cote d’azur blue, the very first Jacobsweg sign on my Way and although there are nearly 3000 kilometres still to walk, although it will probably take me the rest of my life to reach Santiago DC it felt like I’d be there tomorrow. And after that, from then out and further on in every time I saw a shell a zap of happiness hit my solar plexus and somehow I felt strong."

Met two locals with a horse carriage. Took the picture from behind so you can only see the fluovests of the drivers.

@Koidream : I detected where our local geocaches are hidden... 😉

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Finally have internet again. I'll read about your adventures once home. Still not really local but the same flag is flown here (South Carolina highlighted for this post, North Carolina for the next).

At Table Rock State Park most walks start from the nature center. These pictures are of the Carrick Creek Loop with the first and last sections along creeks with cascades and waterfalls caused by the sloping slabs of rock. These sections were full of rhododendrons but they weren't in bloom yet. The upland connecting middle section had mountain laurels just starting to come into bloom.

Now for North Carolina and the Deep Creek area of the Smokey Mountains National Park. (We've had other walks too but I'm not going to bother talking about them).

Here the main attraction other than tubing down the creek is walking to see three nice waterfalls. I did that myself in the morning so I could document the trail with Wikiloc. In the afternoon we walked together and I mostly took pictures of wild flowers.

Okay, that last one is poison ivy, not a wildflower but I take lots of pictures of it for some crazy reason.

Rick, Efren Gonzales is hiking the AT right now. I wonder if serpendipity may have your paths possibly cross at some point...who knows!
(He just left the Smokey's a couple of days ago.)

I'll look into this. Thanks Chris. I loved his CF videos.

Four years ago (after our CF) we hiked for five days on the AT about 100 km from the usual start in Georgia. Peg kept promising the hikers that we would treat them to a beer if we met again in our favorite hiking territory in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I was personally worried that, after her promise, even on day hikes I would have to haul a keg or two of beer with me.

I joined a group of work colleagues for a bush walk around Manly Dam today. Glorious autumn weather. As usual for Aussie bush walks there was a mixture of trails and quite a lot of scrambling. I do miss those soft paths of Europe! But none the less very enjoyable, and we finished up with a sausage sizzle at the end.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Saturday along different paths. A bike ride in the morning along the tidal flats and river. Crossing a bridge, I noticed a sweet love lock, looped with 8 dog licence tags. Later walking in the woods and along the Ladner Slough. A flicker peaking out of it's Alder tree nest. A beautiful first day of May.
