A compilation of our walks from last week(s).
Starting with some smaller walks nearby with a visit to the Polish Military Cemetery.


Followed by the German Military Cemetery, both in Lommel (BE)


Another day we did a 10k walk at "De Kluis van Bolderberg"


A bit further away from home we visited the Sanctuary called "The Sanctuary of Banneux"


And yesterday, we drove to Holland to see the Delta works at Neeltje Jans. There we had a 15k walk through the dunes...

Banneux is such a nice area to do some local walks, much nicer than the Sanctuary of Scherpenheuvel IMHO.

@SabineP : Some health issues kept me away from the internet. I'm still having some issues, but the latest tests are promising. Previous tests looked not that good, but as they say with us (BE) ... weeds don't die

I haven’t posted pictures here for a long time, mostly because I walk the same places again and again. But last weekend I drove some hours to a family gathering in the mountains. Nice weather, beautiful colors.

the smiling farmers directed us around the field to connect to the proper path

A phone box dedicated to the Essex way and which now contains a defibrillator instead of a public phone
An unusual church where we found quite a few similarly built headstones, all bearing the same name and dating from the early 1800 hundreds to just a few months ago
a natural spring
A coffee in the village after crossing a Ford by the path
A return to base and about 20 km

On my frequent Sunday ramble along by and around the river Liffey, and near the mouth as it sweeps out into the wide world. There is a section of wall bordering an inner lock that is used by graffiti artists, and this one has survived for quite a long time:



I have no idea why so many little boats were moored up together, but their masts provide a welcome contrast to the ubiquitous cranes littering the skyline.

A four day visit to friends on Denman Island. Resting, reading, drinking tea, wonderful conversation, delicious food and many walks along beaches, through the woods, farmland paths, and inter-island trails usually accompanied by Gus the dog. Restorative days.

Today was a variety of sightseeing in Door County, WI. Pictures are of Lake Michigan, the Cana Island Lighthouse, up circular stairs to the top for some great views. We finished with a hike around the iisland. The white blazes showing the trail are shaped like lighthouses. Our end of day sunset.

Even more hoops to Jump this time bit at last after nearly 2 years of not seeing the Italian contingent , we are here in the hilltop village of Montescudaio in Tuscany
Before we left I asked the English grandsons if there was anything that they would like us to bring back for them from Italy….in unison, the answer was Enrico and GiovannI, their Italian cousins!!
yesterday and today we had some nice local walks through and from from the village

a VII century arch and above it the inscription.

There are paintings all around the village on the house walls, painted by a local artist during the pandemic signifying Hope and during the dreadful toll taken by the Italians in the early days of Covid 19.
visiting the colourful and well maintained graveyard on the way home and looking at the ages of those that died, it seemed that so very many had lived to a ripe old age.

Then breakfast each morning is on hand with figs and grapes

A stormy day here on the west coast. Heavy rain and wind. A small window of opportunity later in the afternoon when the rain eased a bit. Rain gear on and I managed to get in an hour walk along the river. Fun watching a group of Yellowlegs Sandpipers trying to hold steady on a log. Intermittent strong gusts of wind would knock one or two off and they'd fight against the wind and their closely huddled companions to get back to their position on the log.

Too many ideas for this morning. In the end, I opted for a circuitous approach to the city, bought what was needed, and continued walking home. Here are the photos I took:

The first one shows the toll bridge at the mouth of the sea. Nothing passed, so I have no idea why it was raised, unless it was just a routine check on the workings! The second and third were taken looking at the Rugby Stadium. I found a new route, and came across some elements of the past: a London Bridge. Tells its own story of links to our friends over the water... I cannot resist the warm richness of Virginia Creeper. The house it covers is a bit sad, but I think it is sold, so someone or some group will surely restore it to its former glory. The second last photo made me stop and reflect. I knew that place towards the end of its active life. Here indeed we have no lasting city.
The final photo is of the name of a bar. I had just passed a shape, a person, lying asleep, and my assumption is that the person is used to having the pavement for a bed.
I found it ironic that the name of the bar was for a rather upmarket hostelry, cheek by jowl with the real street urchin lying nearby...

I am back home. Lo and behold I saw this wild hops growing on my trail. Didn't have my phone with, so I snapped off a bit to take a picture after goingback home. My guys enjoy IPA beers...but not me.

A morning walk in my neighbourhood to check on the aftermath of yesterday's storm. The trails and community gardens at Terra Nova survived pretty well! A few flattened plants and tree debris on the trails but not too bad.

About a month ago I made a reservation for the "Anne Frank house". Early this morning by train to Amsterdam, we had an early reservation to avoid any crowds in Amsterdam. It was a nice quiet walk to the museum. After all those previous visits, the visit to the Anne Frank house is still emotional.

At the beginning of the visit the photo and the text of Anne were taken. Everyone should experience the rest of the visit for themselves.

I walked five miles on my local trail with my son today, but we were dropped off by car to walk one way back to the house in the opposite direction. It's always more fun to just go forward and not repeat steps. Fall is just around the corner now with harvested fields.
I saw more wild hops, a few paltry flowers, and some Pheasant's mushrooms growing on a dead tree stump. I went back to the spot with a knife, cut some off, and after google searching, I shaved the tender ones on a mandolin and will saute them in butter, salt and pepper tomorrow. I love foraging!

after the village of Casale, we walked along a beautiful track….on the map as going from one end to another, only to find it blocked just before a big house at the “almost” end!
So back we had to come again
our son in law said that this does tend to happen in Italy!!

yes they live in Montescudiao, a hilltop village above the seaside town of Cecina, the 2 boys are the same age of the 2 English grandsons and get on so well together despite the pandemic keeping them apart for so long
It’s bedlam really when they get together as all are under 10!
It’s a lovely place but I’m not sure if I could stand the heat for so many months of the year!
Give me a temperate climate any time.

Does this help? Rainier isn’t really visible from this spot just north of the Columbia River except on perfectly clear days and then it is tiny. Mt. Hood is easily visible, and Saint Helens just barely.

it was the same for us last year but now….a sort of freedom if you like for travelling
I guess we took it all for granted when we were able to just hop on a plane and take off somewhere
now so many restrictions with all the testing, masks, Locator forms etc etc
They are very very strict here in Italy …mask wearing, getting into any public building or cafe
Even most supermarkets take automatic body temperature before allowing entry
That alone puts mine up!!
Good job they don’t take my blood pressure!!
so hang in there just for a while longer and it will pass

Here comes a cheat. It is a photo of a framed quote in a wonderful bed and breakfast place near the end of the Barrow Way in Ireland. Working up from shorter walks I hiked 20 km around the lakes and ponds of the Forbidden Plateau in Strathcona Provincial Park on Vancouver Island. It took me 8 hrs. which is longer than expected. Varied terrain with some rocky steep and rooty sections and also many nifty boardwalks. Many spots to swim and cool my feet.

Back in late March when I posted a few pics here of the "Big Trees" which my wife and I had hiked out to I still thought at that time I would be returning to France to set off on another Camino. Well, that has not happened so instead I have undertaken to try to find all the big old trees, known as "Veterans" in the forest industry, within + or - 10 kms of where we live.
As some of you may be aware there is a regular though not continuous "war in the woods" out here on Vancouver Island to try to save old growth forests. At present for more than a year there has been a confrontation near Fairy Creek (look it up) between environmentalists and the forestry industry resulting in the arrest of nearly 1000 protesters so far, and it far from over.
During the 45 years we have lived here I have hike along most of the old logging roads and railways and have been awed by the big trees which were left during the first cut 150 years ago for seed trees or because they had a twisted top or a "dog leg" or some blemish which marked them as "unmarketable".
Now eight months into my walks I have almost walked the distance from SJPdP to Santiago. I would never have guessed!
Hopefully next year.

A cool morning walk around Garry Point and along the Fraser river just before and after sunrise. The last of the Firewheels that have blanketed the sand dune hills at Garry Point for a few weeks are blossoming and the fall fungi are sprouting from drift logs. I met a Merlin Falcon very near the edge of the path who didn't seem too concerned with my presence.

the intention was just to have a walk in the countryside but then we found ourselves at the top of the ridge beside the wind turbines
the very gradual ascent was hardly noticed…..and there we were!
Down a village for a coffee, then more down to the road and back
A cloudy day which helped.
A fountain on the way but we didn’t fill up the bottles just in case the water was not intended for human consumption

We look at things and what we really see is how light bounces off things. Light is what we are. Take light away and half the world is gone.

On my short walk to the bay I saw morning light, then the midday sunlight, and now I wait for dusk, not walking but standing still, so that the light can bounce off me ........... for a change.

I have wanted to visit Assisi for many years and indeed I have had a statue of St Francis in my garden for as long as I remember.So off we went to see the place…and what a wonderful place it is

it is a site of pilgrimage for many who want to see the place where St Francis was born, worked and died

The Basilica, consisting of the upper and lower church was the first thing we noticed in the village high on the hill
Building began in 1228 and St St Francis is buried in the lower church
of course I had to question this and was assured by the friar that this is indeed the case!
The colours of the frescoes and paintings are really intense and many famous painters have contributed to the work since the Basilica was built
The cloisters and museums were an addition to our visit

Then it was up the hill and narrow streets to the castle of Rocco Maggiore, standing over the area for 800 years
an amazing place with wonderful scenery

on the lower slopes then and in the “new” part of the village stands the Basilica of Mary of the Angels
Here lies a church within a church…literally.
the first church that the Saint built and later the larger one just built around it
more cloisters and museums to see here
a peaceful place
some sore feet at the end of the day and 11 km walked but I don’t think I will ever forget this beautiful place

A short walk along Boundary Bay trails and then the Fraser river just before the rain began. A woman was feeding pigeons along the river and I took the photo as she was tossing up a handful of seed.

Photo 3, two taxi drivers during their lunch break playing chess. The man in the middle asked to be included in the photo. They were delighted that I wanted to photograph them. The smile on that face says it all.
Photos 4 and 5, at the grounds of Melbourne University. Deep, deep pink blossom in the courtyard facing the Legal Studies Faculty.

Averaging 10 km per day and now that opening of borders has been announced, I’ll gradually increase it up to the time that I fly out. Finally!

Boring? Not at all. Same terrain, different shoes, although the same, and different light, moments, encounters.
Yesterday I looked hard at the soles of my walking shoes. When I had time, I walked over to the same shop where I have bought the same size, make and style since 2006. The young man who served me was a bit mesmerised by my direct purchase, no maybe this, maybe that! Covid closures lost some of the longer serving staff, but that is good for younger people needing a job. He learned how to use the till to take account of a loyalty card. It is one of only two shops where I use one of those. The other one gives me discounts on the electricity bill. Yes, they know all about me - but only a dope would think you are invisible online these days,
Anyway, the photos: looking out to our nearest neighbour across the water. Two swans gliding along peacefully. Aha! Something new... I recognised the Danish flag, (yoohoo @Turga )and had a short chat with a young sailor. He informed me it is a sailing ship dating from 1933. It was first used for shipping goods to Australia, but then it became a training ship. Soon after the photos, the trainees began to follow me along the path. I stopped and asked them if I might take a photo. All delighted, and delightful young women and men. I explained that I would be posting it here, and none of them demurred. Not the best photo, but it shows them. Off they went, free till 14.30 this afternoon. And then I came home. The first 5km clocked up in my new shoes...

gahhhhhhh I miss living in your part of the world...and not just because of moules and pomme frites, which if I were ever on death row would be my last meal.

I was on the Quantocks this afternoon. It was quite squally so camera was deep in the bag when I saw a rainbow sitting on the war memorial for the villagers of Holford and Kilve. As a memorial the villagers planted a group of Scots Pines, presumably soon after the war, high on the hillside above Holford. There is also a simple commemorative stone there. And as you can see they have now grown up. Seeing the rainbow there was actually very moving. You might just be able to spot its last vestiges, which were fast dissolving as I finally got camera to hand.

The morning began with an overcast sky, but brightened during my walk along Roberts Bank and Brunswick Point. I watched a Red-wing Blackbird picking fluff off a cattail and a Northern Flicker feasting on crabapples. They don't really show up in the photos, but lovely purple / mauve asters are blooming along the fields, paths and out on the tidal flats.

I love the picture of the brooms. After we had been to the Anne Frank house, Marianne wanted to go to the witch's shop and then we found, among other things, this sign. ( as a joke )
