Last month the Spanish Consejo de Ministros (Council of Ministers) approved a Spanish VAT increase from 18% to 21%. It will come into effect on 1st September 2012.
Spain has a reduced VAT rate of 8% (to rise to 10%) and a super reduced rate which will remain unchanged at 4%.
The reduced rate includes passenger transport, hotel and restaurant services and others.
The 4% super reduced VAT rate covers food and drink, goods from chemists, construction work and some newspapers.
This rise in the VAT rate will affect people budgeting to stay in hotels, pensiones etc and to use public transport.
PS: The Spanish VAT rate has consistenly been one of the lowest in Europe.
