Travel to Burgos

Hi I'm travelling to Burgos to walk part of the Camino Frances next year and my options seems to be fly into Santander and coach to Burgos, or fly into Madrid, then coach to Burgos. Don't think there's much to choose on the face of it, but wondered if anyone had any experience with either of these options,

I have flown into Madrid - and taken alsa bus which goes from the bus terminal in T4 at airport. It is very quick and handy!

Bus is good. The bus station is only a couple of blocks from the cathedral and the Camino. Train station is way out on the edge of town.

So there's a direct bus from T4 to Burgos?

Yes. I have used it a couple of years ago. Very nice. If I remember correctly there is a toilet on the bus, and it stops for a 20-30 min. break en route.

The bus station in Burgos is some 150m. away from the city gate into the Cathedral square, and the large municipal albergue (very large, but nice, with all amenities you'll need) is mostly dirrectly behind it. Easy. You may of course alternatively book a central hotel room in advance, and enjoy some tapas/wine in town before you start out next morning.

Click on the travel link in my previous post and you will see all daily departures. There may be more departures/day depending on what time of year you arrive (how busy it is).

Edit: For finding the Camino out of Burgos: It passes the municipal albergue. Very easy.

There are several bus times listed from T4 to Burgos.

There are a few different options from MAD T4- even a Supra luxury one - some are direct, some have stops in Lerma, some have a reststop while others don't. But there are multiple options each day. Just be warned it's a 5-10 minute walk from T4 to the bus terminal (it also has a cafe)

I flew to Madrid and took the Alsa bus to Burgos from the airport. It was really simple and the bus station in Burgos is very central just a 5 minute walk to my hotel.

Tapas and wine sounds attractive! However I'm hopping on another coach to take me to my start point in Villafranca Montes de Oca.
I did a part-Camino in 2017 and had to finish there; so unfinished business I guess.
Thanks for the advice. I walked straight through Burgos in 2016 on my first Camino so may stop this time around.

I've taken the Alsa bus from T4 at Madrid to Burgos a couple of times. In the past you could get the bus just outside the terminal. Now buses leave from a new terminal that is a few minutes walk from T4. Give yourself plenty of time as the signs to the bus terminal could be confusing. When I took the bus to Burgos this past September, I had to ask several people for directions with conflicting feedback. Finally I got there as the bus was just about to leave.

It's quite simple to purchase Alsa bus tickets on their web site.

The bus is an easy, cheap and comfortable option as the bus station is at the Madrid airport. Plus there's cafe's inside.

Just for the record, I'll add that there's a Madrid -> Burgos train, which is what I once used. Though to be clear: looking at what others have said about the bus option, I'm not actually suggesting this as a better option.
