I have just popped my Targeta Dorada (Golden Ticket) in my packing box. They cost €12 and cannot be bought online, but can be renewed online.
If journeying too or from the Camino on Spanish trains it could be worth buying, I think mine paid for itself first journey.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
True. Available at stations for one or more years. Up to 40% discount on some services.

Wow, we have only paid 6 euros each for one in past years. I was able to renew for 3 years for only 15 euros last year. Has the price doubled?

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

Even better deal than I remembered

Never knew about the Portuguese thing.

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
I will only be going on a couple of trains...Madrid to Leon, and Santiago de Compostela to Madrid. Is it worth it for me to buy? I am 66. Thanks

I bought one for 6 euros mid March. Saved me a fortune as I used the train from Malaga, Granada, Cordoba, Seville, Toledo and Madrid.

Bevskia, to answer your question, it depends. Spanish train ticket prices are dynamic, like plane tickets . You may be able to buy a ticket in advance which is cheaper than a full priced ticket with discount. Or not. There's a full explanation, and much other useful information about trains in Spain here:

Thanks for letting us know that it can be renewed on line .
I have a couple of questions
1)Can you use it to buy tickets on third party providers (raileurope etc) or do you have to book directly with renfe to use the discount card
And 2) can you buy your ticket in advance ?
Tia

I use mine in Trainline and can buy tickets in advance. My profile saves the Dorada number for my husband and I but I have to enter my passport number each time .

Train for your next Camino on California's Santa Catalina Island March 30 to April 2
Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-
I bought a Tarjeta Dorada ( €6) at Ponferrada, handing over my Irish passport as proof of age. It gives my nationality as "Eirannach" which is Irish for - Irish.
Examining my Tarjeta Dorada some hours later (and many miles away,) I found that the clerk had recorded my name as Sr Eirannach. Which has appeared on every ticket I've bought since.
