An article reporting on the first month of operation. 72 peregrinos so far.

I have just come across this - that unfortunate peregrina, who was roped into the interview as being the only Spanish-speaking pilgrim there on that day, was me!

It’s hard to believe, but in the months since @Takahiwai inaugurated the albergue in A Rúa, 800 pilgrims have slept there! See this article. In 2023, there were a total of 1,864 compostelas given to people who gave the Invierno as their camino. As of the end of October, it was already 2,710. It looks like after all these years of bad predictions by me and other forum members, the snowball is finally starting!

Oh, I didn't have the pleasure of being the first. I think I was there in the fourth week after it opened. I am not really surprised that it's already so popular. Word of mouth spreads quickly, after all. I have to say that having whinged about disliking live-in hospitaleros in a previous thread, I believe I may have changed my mind!

The article mentions that the volunteer hospitaleros currently share the dorm room with the pilgrims, but that plans are underway to find two separate rooms so they will each have their own space. I think that is a very reasonable decision!
That certainly wasn't the case when I was there. Juan had his own bedroom up past the kitchen and dining-room. In fact, on the day we arrived, he was away in the nearest big town buying a super-sized bed for the incoming hospitalero, who was apparently something of a giant, height-wise!

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
