Hello hello! Rather spontaneously, my brother, Dad and I are walking the Camino Primitivo in early January 2025. The date / short notice (we decided late Nov) comes from a mix of circumstance, job flexibility and celebration of the unexpected. I'm so thrilled.

I lived in Galicia for about 3 years so I feel pretty confident about most logistics. However - our 'Day 0' in Lugo is on Reyes Magos (Jan 6) which falls on a Monday this year. I'll get into Galicia late afternoon on Saturday, and I'm debating if I should stockpile food for us for those first couple of days. I guess my question - does anyone know if restaurants will be open on the 6th, particularly for dinner? Can't go to supermarkets on Sunday 1/5 or Monday 1/6, and that first stretch from Lugo to Ferreira seems notoriously desolate. I'm assuming we should hit a supermercado Tuesday morning on our way out of town.. or if we won't have options for dinner on Monday, I figure I should shop first thing Saturday when I arrive.

Any thoughts on this rambling question would be appreciated! The Camino will provide.... and so will the Cliff bars we're bringing.

Search these boards and check Gronze...someone just walked the Primitivo last month, and if I remember correctly, said that Ferreira was a ghost town.

I walked from Lugo to Ferreira on a Monday in late Sept 23, and only found two cafés open along the way on a Monday in high season.

More importantly, make sure you have a place to stay in Lugo.

Buen Camino.

What about staying in Friol and heading towards Sobrado? There seems to be a few places to eat in Friol, as well as 3 supermercados and a service station.

Glad you made me check my notes @PelegrinNikolai! Turns out we are staying in Friol! We booked all our lodging ahead given the time of year. Glad we can count on food waiting for us, if not throughout.

Jumping from there to Melide and link up with the CF.

Thanks @dbier! We've got something in Lugo, that's a good note though, maybe that albergue will know what would be open on Jan 6

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Last year on the 6th January in Ponferrada I found it tough to find much open - but I was constrained after a fall of exploring too much. I did stock up on the 5th.

I am back this year travelling up from Madrid on the 6th to the CF - and I have every intention of bring food with me as I know my first day walking on the 7th is fairly desolate and it would be very lucky to find anything open.

Restaurants in Lugo should be open but I would certainly stock up on some provisions before leaving Lugo as there isn't much in terms of food places on this first stage.
