Staying in Plasencia

Has anybody done the detour to stay in Plasencia? It sounds a lovely town, and not that far from the camino.

I was thinking of going on there after Grimaldo (where part of the main camino is apparently blocked anyway), and then rejoining the way by walking from Oliva de Plasencia near Caparra. Or alternatively walking there from Carcabosa and again rejoining at Caparra via Oliva.

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
I ended one of my pilgramages in Grimaldo and then took a local bus to Placensia. Nice town...from what I can remember an "old" and "new" cathedral, a Parador and a nice pedestrian center of town. The old part of town in a walk up hill from the bus station.

I stayed at a small hotel in the center of town...nice and cheap but I cannot remember the name. Also, went to a somewhat raccus tapas bar where you have a differnt tapa with every drink.

I detoured via Plasencia a couple of years ago and ended up staying for several days. It's a wonderful place - marvellous history and buildings, lovely plaza, excellent day-walks. We blew our budget and stayed in the Parador, a powerfully atomospheric experience.
Let's know how things worked out if you go there.
Best wishes, wes

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Thanks Wes and Jeff. Between you, you've made my mind up and I will go there, as it sounds as if it would definitely "vaut le detour" (as the Michelin star system has it). And it's not really a detour anyway, as a camino clearly went through the town as it apparently has seven pigrim hospitals - can't quite work out whether the VdlP joined the Camino del Levante here, or at Aldeanueva del Camino a few miles further north.

I have the same idea. Walking there from Galisteo and staying for an extra night or so. Just haven't figured out yet what is the best place to get back on the route. Wikipedia mentions that the Via de la Plata used to pass through Plasencia, but I guess there is nothing left of the old road...

I first set off on the Vía de la Plata on All Saints, 2010. Since then it, and its offshoot the Sanabrés, has been a greater or lesser part of all of my caminos, other than last year and when I...
