Stages on the Camino Frances - distances in miles and kilometers

Whilst not accurate I go for 3kms is 2 miles, easier for my brain to calculate when judging the distance to my next tortilla break! I hope that the following isn't too big but I used this for planning my accommodation, may not be exact but good indicator.

Not all Europe, it was just meant to help those who are more used to thinking in miles including those from across "the pond"

I just use math, or a quick conversion in my head
5 km = ~3 miles
10 km = ~ 6 miles

5 miles = ~8 km
10 miles = ~16 km

I can also set my Buen Camino app to use miles instead of km, but I don't because I've gotten used to thinking of the Camino in terms of km.

Made me laugh. I think it also depends on your age.
I can only think of larger distances in metres and kms (I have no comprehension of a mile), but having worked in a chandlery when younger, think of smaller gauges eg 3/16 inch, quarter inch etc common screw size and 5/8 inch (sewing margins). Some of our stuff was metric but others, like brass brads, and copper nails were imperial.
My sister, born 5 years later, and having never worked in the marine industry knows only metric.

And I can only think of celsius temperatures, fahrenheit numbers seem ridiculous and have no meaning to me.
But having been a boatie, can understand a nautical mile.

I have a couple of regular walks that I do - one is 3 miles/5km and the other is 6 miles/a little less than 10km, so I keep those walks in mind when I know that I have 5 or 10 km to get to my next destination.

It's like fluencey in another language, but embodied - eventually you don't have to think about it. I'm American by passport but have mostly lived other places since 1990. Now I have a much better sense of distance in kms than miles, mostly by walking km distances without trying to convert into miles.

Your chart is useful but as pointed out, all EU countries use metres/kilometres, it's easier to just adapt to them, especially as it's the only standard of measurement you're going to see written or posted up anywhere in Spain or anywhere in the EU..

At the Pilgrim's Office, I once had a sweet little old lady of 84 from the US ask me if she could have her distance certificate in miles. She had walked all the way from Pamplona, except a short section of 20km or so someplace on the meseta where she had to take a bus, and she had it dutifully marked in her credential. After a quick calculation on my phone we entered the mileage in brackets next to the kilometres. She left the office with her face lit up, staring at her achievement. She couldn't wait to show it to everyone she knew back home..

As you are using approximate conversions (which seems reasonable) I find it incongruous for you to use 1 decimal place for the cumulative totals which is both meaningless and distracting. Numbers are useful so long as accuracy and relevance is understandable.

2 miles is 3.2 km. Divide by 5 and multiply by 8.

I didn't realise that my simple chart would cause so much "discussion" about me thinking about how many miles I walk. This is the system where I live, all road signs showing miles not kilometres. However, I do accept that it is not for everyone. There is no ideal, but e.g. I prefer thinking of a marathon as being 26.2 miles rather than 42.194988 kilometres. Don't know how to do a smiley face!

I'm not sure how it looks on a mobile phone, but on my computer there is a line of symbols above the message box with options for formatting. At the end are three vertical dots. I click those and a second line appears with more symbols including a smiley face. Clicking on the face opens up the emojis.
