Hi. I plan to stop for 2 nights in SJPP before setting off on the 4th May 2023. Looking for somewhere that will allow me to stop 2 nights. Any recommendations? Thank you.

I used on of the hotels listed in Brierley's guide. I suggest you do a google search and see what ones have the facilities you need and at your price. Try to book directly if possible rather than via one of those booking agencies. You might be able to send an email booking (I recommend sending one in English as well as French). Cheers

Hi, we stayed at Auberge Beilari for two nights in May this year. Saturday and Sunday, we were the only ones staying on the Sunday night but it wasn’t a problem. We had the communal dinner on the Saturday evening and because they don’t do dinner on the Sunday evening we went out for a meal. But we did get breakfast on the Monday morning before we started walking. But we see you are staying during the week so it shouldn’t be a problem.

I'd think about going to Orisson for the 2nd night. It's less than a 3 hour walk.

In my experience it's best to book directly, by phone if possible, with the hotel or hostel. I used the booking app (you can guess which) and I was charged twice, my accommodation was cancelled within 12 hours for no reason and it took two months to get my full refund, through my bank, and with little help from the booking agency or the hotel owner. It's not a regular occurrence but it does happen. No recommendation for where to stay but there's plenty to choose from, however, be sure to read the reviews. Some places are quite sub-standard while some are very good, with not much variation in price.

Gite Zuharpeta. Just on the outskirts to the setting out point from SJPDP. My Wife and I stayed there in a private room for two nights in May this year. They do also have bunks, I think, which is how we slept for the rest of our Camino. Buen Camino.

I highly recommend Beilari. An amazing experience to begin the Camino and more than one day is definitely possible. They start taking reservations sometime after the holidays for the coming season.

I agree that Beilari is a wonderful experience and you can stay two nights. It is a great way to start your camino. I am still in touch by email and in-person with friends I met there in 2012 and 2014!

Same with me! I'm still good friends with two whom I met around the evening meal table at Corazon Puro back in 2015. The owner, Istvan, drove us to SJPdP to start walking the next morning.

Corazon Pura is no longer open I think. We also stayed with them. Lovely couple.

Yep, they are no longer in business as I'd inquired about reserving again in 2017. Istvan and his wife are from Hungary and he told me they had a family situation back home and decided to go back. I just now googled and it is "permanently closed".

They filled a real need on the Camino. Istvan would pick people up at the Pamplona airport. You could stay with them in Bizkaretta if you wanted overnight for the jet lag and/or he would take you on to SJPDP the same or the next day. If anyone wanted to start up an albergue and car service along this stretch again, I think it would be welcome--especially in the season where the bus is not running.

I agree! And the fact that he picked up in Pamplona (we had taken the bus from Madrid in mid April when buses were not yet operating) was definitely a big plus for us newbies, along with him driving us to SJPdP the next morning.
Yes, I think a good nitch for an albergue to open up in that area if one were so inclined.

I agree - and if you had a long flight to get to Spain, I would stay two nights in SJPP and then the next day walk only to Orisson. Even though it is less than a 3-hour walk to Orrison, I think it is the hardest 7.5km on the whole Camino Frances and it is especially difficult if it is Day 1 for you, and you are not well-rested and/or jet-lagged and/or haven't done much training.

These were my reasons for walking the Valcarlos route instead, although day two from V. to Roncevalles still "did me in".

We stayed at Le Chemin Vers L'Etoile for 3 days before starting. Host Eric was SUPERB.

I’d add my recommendation that Beilari is a great way to begin a Camino. Great hosts, friendly atmosphere, communal meal and get acquainted time. It’s nice to start walking already knowing the names of other pilgrims along the most challenging day!

I stayed at Beilari for 2 nights ( after a flight from Australia so thought I’d need it) . Joseph at Beilari is wonderful, it was a great experience to start the Camino

Lots of places allow 2 nights in SJPDP.

That said - why not one night in SJPDP and a second night in Orisson at Refuge Orisson or Albergue Borda? It is what I did and would do again in a heartbeat. Spend the morning in SJPDP exploring then walk to Orisson early in the afternoon. Breaks up the first day of walking, and both places have a great pilgrim's meal and companionship. It is where you might meet your first Camino Family.
