If you come off the Primitivo route to Melide you need to know that there IS an alernative Municipal Albergue for around 140 people available whilst the actual original alberue is under repair & upgrade (now June 2010 onwards). There are no signs or notices (as on the Camino Frances) which infrm you and neither is there at the original alberge either !
Can & did result in much confusion & time wasting, as also the tourist information desk is tucked away WITHIN the local museum with no obvious sign, next to the main church. It is not obvious and neither did they even explain any of this, although gave me a map marking the Alternative albergue. This is only 800 metres from the other one, s a 'hangar' or warehouse type building which has segregated room of around 24 for sleeping and has sufficient hot water & showers, & is perfectly accptable alternative. The tourist people will indicate it to you on a map, at least but are unlikely to explain the stuation.
Confused me and left one German left roughing it outdoors overnight (although there are quite a few, more expensive private albergues around. They seem to have been pretty full, maybe as part of the confusion for others, too. Or maybe the Camino Frances pilgrims prefer that little bit more luxury than the upgraded warehouse accommodation).
Note that it was said there were notices explaining this as pilgrims approached on the Camino Frances, but NOTHING from the Primitivo route. But then maybe it's worth knowing in advance irrespective. Hope this helps to plan & save time on arrival in Melide.
