Please recommend trail shoes in wide (6E) size

Hi,

I am planning my first hike on Camino de Santiago later this year, and would like a recommendation for trail shoes.

I have wide feet (6E, US 9 / 260mm) with high instep, so often have to do with 4E with one size up (US 10 / 270mm), but for such a long hike, I'd like a good pair that fits well. Have tried New Balance Leadville v3, but their 4E is too narrow. Any recommendation for 6E size shoes?

Welcome to the forum Bud, let me be the first to wish you a Buen Camino!

I too have duck feet, and found there really aren't any trail shoes that were wide enough for my taste. I'll be running out to try what anyone else might know of!

What time are you going exactly? If its a drier part of the year, lots of people do the Camino in running shoes. I went in April and wore runners on nice days, and suffered with Merrills that mostly fit on the rainy ones. There are also lots that wear hiking sandals, and just let their feet get wet. Either way, you must have SOMETHING you can walk distance in, an ill-fitting shoe is not an option if its your only footwear.

Try Zappos.com? They have the best assortment of odd sizes (I was in need of women's US 12 boots, for example).

New Balance has a pretty good selection of 6E shoes. I'm partial to the 928 or 990 series as they both have good arch support. The 928 is classified as a 'walking' shoe and the 990 as a 'running' shoe, but both are excellent for walking. I mostly do trails in hiking shoes / boots, but I sometimes use New Balance for day walks.

Have you checked Salomon X Ultra and XA Pro range, they at least have a wide well protected front.

I wore NB 990 to ABC trekking in winter, and the pair worked out fine. But, I am looking for something more breathable for a long hike, maybe with mesh top. Guess I have to go back to 990.

I would suggest Altra Lone Peak but I don't know if they fit a 6E.

Also Teva F1 sandals have velcro straps so easy to adjust and many people walk in these. I haven't walked the entire canine in then but I take them and use them as a spare pair come night shoe... and I live in them at home.

I love my Altra Lone Peak duck shoes. But 6E? Are you sure you're not putting your shoes on sideways?

First, thank you all for your suggestions. For those who may be interested, I ended up getting a new pair of NB 990. The new version (v4) actually has bigger toe box, so I was able to fit in 4E this time. It was a choice between 990 and 860. 860 had better support for low arch (I have high instep, low arch), and was slightly lighter, but went with 990, which I'm already used to.

I earned the nickname Bam Bam due to my enormously wide feet (EEEEEE - 6E) or possibly wider. I struggled forever and like most of you was stuck ordering from the internet. Lucky for me I found a site with 6E Wide Boots for men like us, and even luckier, they are in my back yard here in the Minneapolis St Paul area. The owner was actually working to fit people (unbelievable), and he said 90% of the boots they sell are 6E wide. I was blown away that they not only had boots in 6E to try on, but they had an actual selection of them "to boot". Please excuse the pun.

They have the feel of small independent sit/fit store, but have a huge warehouse with thousands of boots and shoes in back because they ship all over the world. There were even some big feet guys shopping there from Australia.

They have more than just hiking boots too. When I returned from my 21 mile hike on superior hiking trail, I was able to get work boots in EEEEEE - 6E wide too. This place is awesome, and the most I can do is pay it forward by spreading the word. I hope this place will always be around, because i haven't shopped for shoes like that since I was about 11 or 12yr old kid. I don't mean to ramble, but seriously, they kept bringing out 16's, and 18's and they even had boots to size 21. I used to think i was a big guy until I walked into XLfeet. Some of those guys dwarfed me, and I'm 6'5" with 350lbs.
