January to April 2014 arrivals at Santiago de Compostela Pilgrims’ Office

During this year’s first 4months, 22’354 people registered at the Camino pilgrims’ office in Santiago de Compostela. This represents an overall increase of 7% compared to the same period in 2013.

When taking only the months March and April in account, this increase was 9%. January and February had a slack (- 14%), possibly due to adverse weather forecasts.

It can be assumed that the Easter holiday period has motivated approx. 4’000 pilgrims: March 2013 and April 2014

The Camino Francés walkers, 66% of all arrivals, increased by 5%, when the Camino Portugués increased by 13% (20% of the total), the Via de la Plata by 10% (5% of the total) and the remaining routes (9% of the total) with the Inglés (+17%), del Norte (+5%), and others (-3%)

On the Camino Francés, starters at SJPP increased 14% compared to last year. There were however fewer people who had started in Roncesvalles and Pamplona. The numbers of walkers who started in towns between Burgos and Sarria did not change much from 2013 to 2014 either.

Pilgrims who had started in Sarria increased by 4%. They represented nearly half the number of Camino Francés walkers (46%) and 30% of all arrivals.

I was looking at the 2013 statistics and see that when it comes to why people complete the Camino, it only lists "Religious" and "Non-religious." Is there a breakdown somewhere of what those non-religious reasons are?

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

It will take a big burst of pilgrims around St. James Day for July 2014 to be bigger than July 2013. I am projecting from the daily figures that the two months will be about the same. When monthly figures come out, sometimes there are revisions to daily numbers that add a lot of pilgrims.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Today was the first day since St. James Day eve that the compostela count was over 2,000.
