Our Shikoku Pilgrimage

Anna&Michael

Not all those who wander are lost!
Time of past OR future Camino
2019
Our Shikoku Pilgrimage begins inauspiciously. We ask the author of our guidebook if he knows of reliable GPS tracks. His response is stern. "A pilgrimage is not a hike but a path of ascetic training. Getting lost is part of the journey".

Chastened, we temper our planning for the pilgrimage but remain committed to following the footsteps of Kōbō Daishi. What follows is a fascinating journey visiting ancient temples, dining in convenience stores, struggling with a foreign language and enjoying the warmth and graciousness of Japanese people.

On this first stage of our pilgrimage, we walk through Tokushima prefecture; the stage of the awakening of the spirit.
