My Own Camino do Mar and Inglés

Hello Peregrinos,
Last year, I walked from San Sebastian to Ribadeo and then Camino do Mar up to O Cevido (one segment farther from Viveiro). I am starting from Ocevido on 11/06/24. I intend to reach Ferrol via Engles and walk along the coastal lines before turning left toward Santiago de Compostela. I designed my route mainly using Google Maps and did a simulation walk on my NordicTrack with iFit. Has anyone done a similar walk? Would anyone give me some feedback?

The first two maps show the entire route (376K, more or less); then, I broke it down into daily plans.

Between O Vicedo and P. Espasante you can follow the "Camino Ruta Cantabrica" which takes you past Playa Esteiro and is a bit shorter than the route you have marked. It's spectacular and well-marked.

I usually use Osmand for maps - it usually has better detail and more walking paths marked than Google Maps.

Hi, last year I walked from Santander to A Coruna along the coast following the Camino Ruta Cantabrica after Ribadeo and walking on to A Coruna after Ferrol.

24mths ago I walked the Lighthouse Way between Malpica and Finistere.

Next spring I plan to close the gap between Malpica and A Coruna - so interested to see your route. I am walking between Sagres and Rome - so it is part of filling the bits I missed.

Assume you are using US dates and starting in a few days. If so you'll need to check available daylight hours. For example, on Day 4 you are doing a lot of climbing in a remote area with the possibility of poor weather blowing in from the coast.

Mobile coverage may be a bit patchy so best have a plan for the unexpected (to the extent you can plan for the unexpected!)

This is a very good point. A lot of the Ruta Cantabrica is pretty exposed, the wind was harsh even on a sunny day. It would be miserable in the cold and rain, verging on unsafe where the trail is exposed. I think your route looks wonderful, but I'd wait until later next spring to do it.

Check your phone provider for a map showing cell service coverage in the areas you'll be walking.

Even in May, I found that some accommodations were not yet open. On the plus side, any hotels that ARE open are sure to have space!

Yes, I travel this time of the year, so I don't have to worry about getting rooms. But then, many hotels are closed during the winter I downloaded offline maps and have a satellite-based emergency phone service. You might be right about rain and cold, but I have wanted to do this for a long time and am willing to give it a try. On the other hand, I can always change my plans and go to sunny Almeria, and then I might miss the cool weather. I am still revising the map to avoid restricted areas and to be closer to the ocean views.

You sound prepared so enjoy the trip and the wonderful views you'll get along the coast. To be fair I did the route in the opposite direction in early December and had great weather. So I hope you are lucky with the same. And if you can manage it, try to see San Andrés de Teixido. There's not much accommodation in the area so you might need to adjust the route to allow the time.
