Time of past OR future Camino
2014
Hello fellow pilgrims!
I walked the Camino Frances back in 2014 and am now hoping to do so again this summer. This Camino I would like to stay in a monastery or convent, or hopefully more than one. Has anyone stayed at a monastery or convent along the way that they enjoyed? I realize with COVID that even if there are any, they may not be open to guests. But I remain hopeful. 🌸

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
Definitely worth checking, though, given the passage of time and COVID from when that list was first published. If you find out about changes during your research and trip, please post an update!

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
Thanks @mspath and @alexwalker. When I return to the Camino early 2022 my plan is to stay at as many convents and monasteries as possible. I hope to look for short volunteer options at these going forward.
Colette Z,
When you find info to update please do report it. I would be pleased to bring the list up to date.
Whenever/wherever you go, Buen Camino.

We stayed at two monastery sites on the Aragones, but both times were in adjacent upscale hotel rooms 😂. San Juan de la Pena is now a tourist site while the Leyre only allows men to room in the monastery itself. You are allowed to attend services with the monks in the church, though, which was wonderful. It’s increasingly difficult to find albergues in active religious communities versus repurposed religious buildings.

While technically NOT monasteries, opportunities do exist to stay at other religious properties. For example, the Catholic Church in Logroño houses and feeds pilgrims in the rectory, followed by a prayer service in the church itself. (You even get to traverse a secret passageway from the dormitory to the chapel!!!).
