Madrid to fit my needs, your help please

Time of past OR future Camino
(2017)
I will arrive by train in the morning on this Friday. That Sunday I must be at the airport by 0800. I have a backpack and a large bag with no wheels.

I want to enjoy Madrid, in
accommodation before sundown and no nightmare stories getting to the airport.
Cost is a factor.
What is my best option?

Two nights in Madrid.

I intend to sight see in the city center but I need to fly out on Sunday morning.

I am looking for guidance as to where I should be based

I hear good things here about this hostal close to the airport.
Maybe use this as your base and then take public transport to the city centre?

If this is more than budgeted then maybe compare by leaving your heavy luggage in a locker at airport and use cheaper accomodation in the old town?

If you plan to go to the art museums (Prado, Reina Sophia, etc.), I would try to be near Atocha station. We stayed at the Oxygen which has pods for sleeping and lockers for luggage. It has a 24 hr desk and was clean and near restaurants, laundromat, and grocery stores.

There is an airport bus direct to the airport. I have taken it several times and it is a good option (see link below). The Cercanías trains 1 and 10 also go direct to the airport from Atocha. If there is more than one in your party, the taxis from the city to the airport are capped at 30 euros and can be a good value.
