Is a winter Camino Aragones doable ?

I have this deep urge to walk and I wonder if a winter Camino Aragones doable. I have from Dec 20 to Dec 30 (including flying/travelling time).

If the answer is yes, is anyone interested to walk this with me ?

Hi Rebecca,

I walked the Camino Aragones in early September. At Arres, I looked at the signing-in book for pilgrims and found that even over the Christmas period last year and early in the New Year, there were walkers. So it seems that it is very do-able in winter.

Apart from Somport down to Canfranc, which can be a little steep, it isn't difficult and from there on it is a gentle downward/flat route to Obanos. Only out of Ruesta and Sanguesa were there any hills that took a little more effort.

I'm going to post info about how to get to Somport via bus/train if that is your starting point and some general info about the route.

But, sorry, no, I don't have any free time over the Christmas period!

Hi Rebecca

The photo beside this post [it loses a lot because it is so small] is of Somport Pass at sun-up on April 7th 2008. Even so you can see that there is a lot of snow there, though it is at the tail end of their ski season. I was lucky the day I was there because the weather was fine and still, but other pilgrims have talked of seeing nothing much except mist.

If you were to start from Somport you may have to walk on the road rather than the marked trail until you get below the snow line. I would recommend a night at Arres if it suits your schedule.

Just a note for anyone doing this Way. On the stretch into Ruesta, you find yourself walking in a very dense brushy trail that's almost like a tunnel. It's FILLED with pesky mosquitos and gnats. I discovered by accident, that if you can cut to your left THROUGH the brush, you find yourself on a lovely farm road that travels parallel to the "Camino" trail, minus the bugs and brush!!! It ends up in exactly the same place! :lol:

Whilst I would really love do walk the Aragones route, perhaps an end December walk may be too challenging. Especially alone, and for someone from the tropics who have very little, to no experience, with winter and the snow.

As it is still the Holy Year, I will choose instead another route which can lead me into Santiago within the time that I have ie 10days.
