Time of past OR future Camino

Hi. I am a first time Camino participant looking forward to an introductory 2 weeks on Camino del Norte starting May 7. Will be traveling from Canada to Paris arriving into Hendaye via train from Paris. I am wondering about logistics to Irun before starting the following day.

- What is the best way to get to Irun from Hendaye?
- Is there a preferred hostel/hotel/albergue in Irun to overnight at before starting the nest day?

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Hi, mmorash, Welcome to the forum.

It's a very short walk over the bridge to Irún. Just put it on google maps and you'll see very clearly how to get there.

The local amigos are in charge of the Irún albergue. I've been there, but it was a decade ago. It opens at 4 pm, I believe, which is later than most, so that may be an inconvenience. I remember that there were a few pensiones near the train station in Irún, which is also very close to the albergue, so if you want to sleep somewhere other than the albergue, I'd head to that area. Buen camino, Laurie

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Hi, here's some more info on the albergue:

If you google map "hospital de peregrinos de Irun" you'll see it's a hop skip and a jump from the station. Laurie is right, it only opens from 4pm.
If it were me I'd probably get a hotel/pension after such a long international flight, train trip from Paris, etc. Just to get a proper night's rest before starting the camino. If you go to booking.com they have lots of offers in the region of €30.

TGV trains from Paris terminate at Irun Renfe station.

The only exception is if your schedule includes transfer to a TER train in Bordeaux. TER trains terminate in Hendaye.

The Metro Donostialdea Hendaia station is co-located with Gare d'Hendaye. The Metro runs every half hour and has a stop at Irun Colon across the bridge over the tracks from Irun Renfe station.

Hi Mike,
Its a shame you have to start immediately,
We walked from Bidart to Hendaye along the "coastal sender" then got the water taxi to Hondarribia.
It is a lovely town and we enjoy two nights there before the steep climb.
Big day to SS , start early and don't rush , you are walking in God's country .
After leaving Deba walking to Bilbao you may think
"Have i left that beautiful section with those world renowned towns/cities too early"

There is a commuter rail service, for 1 or 2 euros that runs between Hendaye station, Irun station and San Sebastian station called Euskotren. It's a very short walk, maybe 400 meters from the Euskotren metro station in Irun to the Irun rail station.
From Irun station to Hendaye station is 2.7km walk.

Sorry I wrongly posted a reply on a different trains question.

I would recommend an overnight stop in Irun. We found a good, clean simple pension on Booking.com. Close to stations, shops and cafes.
This gave us the opportunity to buy our Spanish rail (senior) passes and tickets ready for travel the next day.

Thank you for the detail Scott. Greatly appreciated.

Will keep in mind for future travels. Sounds like a great place for a side trip.
