How to pay for bus within Santiago?

Hola, does anyone know if you can pay for a single municipal bus ride within Santiago city limits by tapping one's contactless payment card, similar to a London bus? Or do you have to purchase a pass, carnet of tickets or the like? Thanks!

Not sure about cards but there is a flat fare of €1. I just handed over a coin the last time I took a bus to the airport.

It’s funny, as so many of us have gone cashless when paying for things, I have retained this thing about always having cash on me. Unlike most of my friends who are useless when it comes to stomping up their share of tips to leave on the table…ho ho ho…

I saw a Facebook post recently from someone who had run out of cash about 3 days walk from the nearest ATM on the Via de la Plata. So used to card payments that they just didn't think to keep a reserve of cash on hand. Worth remembering that there are still places in rural Spain which do not accept cards and where cash is the only acceptable payment option. Very 20th century...

Even at home, we always need some cash. Retirement gift donation for someone at work. Tip money for the bagger at the military commissary. Registration for our campsites.

On the Camino, cash for donativo albergues, donativo stands of fruit/drink, cup of coffee or a beer. Laundry machines.

Apart from the airport trip, I have never used the bus within Santiago, its a very walkable city

I think if you wanted to go outside of the inner city to the big Decathlon, etc. you might want to take the bus...

I think I read recently that the base fare was going from €1,00 to €1,25.

Still cheap. But, do double-check.

Thanks to all who replied. In the end we just walked.. we realized that would take the same time as walk to bus stop+wait for bus+bus ride+walk to final destination

Even that Decathlonshop is only five k walking from the cathedral.
But the city Decathlon has also a broad choice.

Yes, so many pilgrims rarely leave the old town once they arrive though except to travel to bus/train station or airport though. The bus is still I nice option to the suburbs.

Depending on the local route, you could be very correct. In particular, there have been issues with the Line 6 and 6C buses because of sharing the city route, with all the requisite local stops the local residents use, with the airport route.

The Junta are in the process of sorting this out. But ever since they eliminated the direct airport bus from Plaza Galicia a few years back, Route 6 has been all screwed up.

Thanku. Didnt know there was a city based store. I've always walked to the big one.

The city based store in the Ensanche is very small and only carries a limited line of items. I like to make a secondary "pilgrimage" to the superstore on Rua Polonia - on the 6c bus line. There my eyes glaze over as I wander the aisles.

Wnhiel Decathlon has a presence in the US now, its sole brick and mortar store is in San Francisco - like for supply chain reasons. But, their online shopping capability is fine with me. See it at www.decathlon.com.
