Happiness is...

Time of past OR future Camino
Via Francigena (2017), plus more than 2000 Km/year of trekking, hiking and minor caminos since 2000.
Happiness is for me a new pair of shoes to test:
will these awesome Topo Athletic Runventure-2 be able to topple the Altra Lone Peak 3.5 from no. 1 position in my personal rank?
I will give you my answer in a few weeks, after a few hundreds of kilometers... Stay tuned!

Topo Runventure.webp

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Are they zero drop? Or 3mm drop? What is the cushion amount compared to Altra Lone Peak? I like Altra Superior’s fit but the Lone Peak has more cushion. Decisions, decisions!?!

I'll be awaiting the results of the test. I'm a Lone Peak fan and wear them for all hikes and long distance walks. I will be donning a pair of the Neo's for my upcoming Camino.

Happiness is, for me, finding a small book on a stone fence while walking up through the Pyrenees. I stop to read from it and respectfully return it to its place. There will always be more pilgrims coming behind me.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

We have had some TOPO's on, but I do know that the Lone Peak 3.0 beats the 3.5. Waiting to see the next generation Lone Peak coming out this summer. We went to an Altra shoe demo recently and then talked to a rep at a running expo last week.

Both Lone Peak and Runventure-2 are zero drop.
The former has a sole of 25 mm, and weighs 295 grams.
The latter has a sole of 19 mm, and weighs 270 grams.

Topo Athletic Runventure-2: ten days and 180 Km later...
These shoes really rock me.
After a quite long break-in/acquaintance, walking and running stretches of 6 to 12 Km, yesterday I did a hike of 29 Km on the Alps, below the snow level.
I chose a trail with the largest variety of ground as possible: mud, dry and wet rocks, gravel, grass, steep and mild front and side slopes...
The result is totally positive. The sole of the Runventure-2 is not thick, so I can feel very well the nature of the ground and my balance and motion reflexes are very well triggered by that feeling.
Their grip is superb, even on wet rocks, nearly at level of the best Vibram rubber.
My wide feet fit really well in them and after that walk of about 7 hours I did not feel the urgency of taking them off. Good sign.
Another important test that I performed is the "soaking test" ;)
I walked a stretch of 12 Km (about 2 hours) under heavy rain with the shoes totally soaked. And another day I ran for 8 Km in the same weather condition (it rains a lot, these days, in Piedmont!). The outcome is very positive. Beside the always good grip on the ground, the feet are well kept in the shoe upper, no chafing at all.
And the the next morning the shoes were dry and ready to use again. I just delicately rinsed them in cold water and left inside house with some newsprint clad inside them.

My opinion
I would say that walking/running with the Altra Lone Peak 3.5 is like driving a stable, powerful, restful Porsche Cayenne, while the Topo Runventure-2 are like a nippy, agile and still very comfortable Alfa Romeo roadster.
So... depending on my mood, I will go out with one or the other, with the maximum pleasure and satisfaction every time. :)

Aww I did my first camino in 2015 in an early pair of topos. Zero drop and minimal soles in those days. I felt every pebble. Totally cured my plantar fasciitis and any other foot problems I had. Zero blisters. But feeling all the sharp pebbles took some discipline because pilgrims do NOT complain. Totally worth it because the plantar fasciitis and the numb feet etc, have never returned.
Next camino walked in altra lone peak 2.5. Loved the tread. Sooo much easier on the soles of my feet but as for the shoe, nowhere near as comfortable as my old topos.
So happy to hear that topo now does shoes with deeper treads.
Definitely my next shoe.
Thank you
